Re: [MBZ] 123 '85 TD Wagon castor Adjustors and other suspensionstuff

2013-12-22 Thread Rich Thomas
I rebuilt the front suspension on a TD and an SD. That part is just a bolt
with that cam washer head to adjust in/out on the lower control arm. It is not
really a wear item.

As mentioned elsewhere you probably have worn bushings which are rubber sleeves
inside the inner control arm attachments. That would give the impression of
loose. The upper can be changed relatively easy but the lower requires spring
removal. If you decide to do that (and it is a job doable in the driveway,
nothing too exotic but you need a spring compressor and an air impact wrench
helps) you might as well renew the ball joints and some links on the steering
too. You might want to do the uppers (you buy the arm/bushing already
assembled) then see if there is still play, which is likely. That will mean
lower bushing time. It is a separate part you press in once the old bushing
comes out of the arm.

That of course depends on how long you want to keep the car as the parts will
be a few hundred dollars and whatever labor costs. Once done it will be good
another 20 or 30 years and 200k or 300k miles.

I have a writeup on doing the job on the TD and pics of the SD but did not do a
writeup.

I can address the ball joints. Jack the front end to unload the wheel and
try to wiggle the tire from the top and bottom. If it moves at the bottom

replace the ball joint.

To replace the ball joint the steering knuckle must be removed completely,
which involves removing the brake caliper and the hub/brake disk/dust shield
assembly first. There are two special tools that let you disconnect the
upper ball joint (first) and then the lower ball joint (second) to remove
the knuckle/spindle. The ball joint can be pounded out of the spindle with
a big hammer but another special tool (there are two types) is needed to
press in the new ball joint without damaging the boot.

I haven't done the inboard bushing where camber gets adjusted. The
eccentric kit you show is just the bolt, which may be OK. The main thing to
replace is the rubber bushing assembly which requires removal of the lower
control arm. And that requires a GOOD spring compressor. This is a big job

The shocks are not difficult to replace and don't require special tools
other than 12 point sockets the correct size.

As I recall, that filter goes inside the fluid reservoir, which is inside
the engine compartment.

Concerning this suspension/steering work. It's probably investigating first
to see what really needs to be replaced. Inspecting for torn ball joint
boots is trivial. Ball joint shake is easy. Inspecting the bushing at the
eccentric takes some experience.

Replacing the rear control arms for play? What? That sounds ridiculous.
Why wouldn't you replace just loose bushings?

Replace camber adjusting bolts? Unless the car is so rusty they won't come
out without damage there is no need to replace them. They don't wear out.

I don't know your mechanic but it sounds like he saw you coming and is

I would agree, as even my level of nit-pickyness wouldn't mandate replacing
adjusting bolts unless they were coming out for another job.

I see a lot of the work specified here as being near overkill. How leaky are
the rear struts? Is the rear suspension clunking? If the self-leveling system
is working properly and not bottoming out under load or driving conditions,
there is nothing that would indicate replacement of the major components. I
would add that a number of people have successfully rebuilt leaky rear struts
as well.

I wonder about the amount of work going into a car of that age. You have to
take a step back and ask yourself if it's really necessary.

From that article, I inferred that if I just left the Windows Update

With the new n being 41 greater than the old n, I can just imagine how

Yes, that sounds like the problem.

From that article, I inferred that if I just left the Windows Update
running, it would eventually complete the O(2^n) process. After my Garmin
maps update completed, I restarted Windows Update and left it. This
morning I returned to my laptop to find that Windows Update had indeed
completed and said I had 41 updates. I told Windows Update to go ahead
and it is now in the process of downloading and installing.

With the new n being 41 greater than the old n, I can just imagine how
long it will take next time.

Re: [MBZ] Civil Service, Oh Yeah! qa9uqavy

2013-12-22 Thread Dieselhead
Deming was all about process control -- the theory that if you
calibrate manufacturing equipment and get a really good handle on
what changes in the equipment produce what results, you can adjust
on the fly to keep making high quality, proper sized, etc parts
rather than making a billion parts and sorting out the good ones (on
in the case of GM, pretending you found the good ones and using the
bad ones anyway).

The system, in various guises, is called statistical process
control, and in many places is a wonderful thing. However, one
variant at least, Six Sigma, has been applied in many, many wrong
ways -- I've heard form some engineers that all statistical process
control does is find bad parts. If the process does not have a
calibrated knob the operator can turn to change the final part a
known amount, statistical process control does nothing for you
except generate non-sense data.
I've seen people attempt to use Six Sigma for personnel issues, for
instance, which is simply insane and demonstrates conclusively that
the whole idea simply went over the heads of the people involved.

American business schools don't teach much beyond how to steal money
and cut costs on a VERY short-term basis, using a vast array of
'business case histories that are fake. Hence the idea that you
shouldn't know anything about what you are managing because you are
managing people and people are all the same.

All compressed flatulence being mascaraded as knowledge, but someone
is making a pile of money, so it must be true, eh?

Peter

6 sigma is part of the CQE body of knowledge dressed up and
repackaged to make some schmuck rich. I forgot his name.

Deming was spot on, but did not invent SPC. He did teach it to the
Japanese, and changed made in Japan from meaning cheap junk to As
good as German but cheaper to better than German as the Japanese
further developed the system.

Walter Shewhart developed SPC at Bell Labs, and that is where and
from whom Deming learned it. One of the best quotes of Deming is
some things are unknown and unknowable. For managing people,
Deming's System of Profound Knowledge is where to look. However, it
is not easy to understand or to apply. You have to be a serious
student of Deming to even begin to understand what he is getting at.
Demings 14 points are easier to understand and implement.

But the prior post about the 'merkuns didn't want to know.. or
something to that effect is not true. FDR installed Deming to make
the 'merkun war production hum. Deming made it do, to borrow a
phrase from Captain Pickard. When the war ended, Truman canned
Deming, 'mercun industry tossed out all the women trained in SPC, and
forgot all they knew.Deming was asked to speak in Japan, and the
Japanese too the message to heart, and then transformed the whole
country.

The short explanation of the difference between mercun system of
manufacturing tolerance and the Shewhart/Deming/SPC system is this.
In Manufacturing tolerance, a part is acceptable if a dimension is
above Y (lower limit) and below Z (upper limit) where SPC focuses on
building a system where the peak of (a bell curve) distribution is at
the exact measurement desired, and the tails of the curve are within
tolerance, then work on the system so the tails get closer and closer
to the peak (or ideal measurement).

This is highly simplified for illustration, and assumes a one
(critical) dimensional part. In fact parts or products have many
dimensions, and in most cases, many parts. The great difference in
performance of the same exact transmission made by ford (tolerance)
or made by mazda (SPC) is a great illustration. Ford transmissions
crapped out early (most from in warranty to maybe 80k miles) while
the mazda mostly went over 150k miles.

SPC can be applied to any system that can be measured and controlled.
There is even a form of SPC for one off products, such as custom
built houses. SPC is only only one of the tools of quality. the
Quality Engineering profession has many tools. For more info go to
asq.org, visit your local section of ASQ and look at

Re: [MBZ] 123 '85 TD Wagon castor adjustors and other suspension stuff - amydugy5

2013-12-22 Thread Scott Ritchey
I'd like to re-engage on this. You mention replacing a lot of stuff on this
old car. Are you doing this yourself or paying someone? The reason I ask
is you may be spending $$$ to fix what ain't broke. If you want to build a
show car, that's one thing. But if you want a useful transportation
workhorse you need to identify the (probably few) real problems vs changing
parts at semi random.

Front shocks are conventional and can be changed at any time; you don't need
to disassemble the front suspension to replace front shocks.

The rear shocks are hydraulic cylinders and never need to be replaced unless
they leak or show obvious damage. Those two rear spherical accumulators do
wear out (they lose the gas charge) but that will be obvious as a real hard
ride, effectively a hydraulically-locked rear suspension. If the ride isn't
hard, the accumulators are probably OK. There are rubber bushings in the
rear trailing arms which get hard and there is one large rubber piece on
each rear side (which gets deformed) that effects ride and ride height and
may need replacement but doesn't require disassembling the rear suspension
(I forget what it is called). But seriously, if the back end isn't leaking,
stays level, and doesn't ride hard, it's probably OK.

Front shocks are conventional and can be changed at any time; you don't need
to disassemble the front suspension to replace front shocks. At the front
end, the upper ball joint assembly seldom wears out if the boot is intact.
It carries very little load. Also, depending on corrosion, there is danger
of breaking the end off the torsion bar (required to replace upper ball
joint/bushings) so don't mess with that just for fun. The lower ball joint
bears the weight of the car so if it shows movement or the boot is torn
replacement will eventually become a safety issue. The ball joints are
cheap; get good ones. The labor to replace them isn't so cheep and some
special tools ate needed. Frankly, if the lower ball joint boots are OK the
ball joint is probably OK too. Also at the front end are guide rods (aka
brake rods) that brace the outer end of the lower control arm against the
chassis. These can get dry and wear out.

I guess the main thing is to assess the condition of all the parts before
you start replacing things. With new suspension rubber it may ride like a
new car but it isn't a new car. So don't waste a lot of cash on a fool's
errand.

There are other important things like brakes, engine mounts, and flex disks
that you need to look at.

Scott

OK, I am getting new Bilstein shocks in front, Sachs-Boge self leveling

even when loaded.

1. While the car is up, the shop says the castor adjustors have wear
(small). Does it make sense to do this now? From what I have seen, it
relates to the front end alignment. I am getting confused looking at parts.
Is this what I need x 2?

2. Deciding whether to have the ball joints done at the same time though
there is no inspection reports of wear noted and the car does not present
any tracking issues. Is it possible to check anything when it is not on the
lift? Two boots and two boot kits, correct? Just wanting to get everything
tight again. The black sedan is all done and it made a world of difference,
but...just in time for two huge tree branches to smash the top in the
middle. Sig!

3. Where is the hydraulic suspension filter located for the self leveling
suspension in the rear?

sure how to feel this when driving.

There is nothing cliche about the theories behind teaching methodologies. I
would agree with what you say, but the problem starts at the top - the
administration.

As for Richard's comment about tenure, it no longer exists in our district.
Effective this coming January our teachers go on an evaluation system that
determines whether or not they get raises. Existing teachers who have tenure
can keep if it they choose to, but if they do their salaries are effectively
capped. From what I hear the better part of the faculty has decided to give up
tenure.

I htink that has an untended double meaning.

I think Dan meant that most of the the faculty decided to give up

The other meaning is exactly as written. The better part of the
