huuh how does this work, there can be no torque at zero revolutions.

There is no _power_ at zero revolutions. Torque is like
voltage: useless by itself. Torque has to move in order
to generate power, just like voltage (electrons at pressure)
have to move (current) to generate power.

Would this not cool off the plugs, thus defeating the purpose of the
exercise in warming the plugs up to operating temp?

I believe the idea was to have the aluminum head hot so that it expanded

I'm not sure how that works, however.
Doesn't a hole in an aluminum casting get smaller when you heat the casting?

 Torque smoke?

Yes and no. Torque occurs with whatever speed your thing is rotating.

Remember, internal combustion engines typically have maximum torque and
maximum horsepower at different speeds. IIRC, the maximum torque RPM is
lower than the maximum horsepower RPM.

Steam and electric motors have maximum torque and maximum horsepower at
different speeds as well, with one of the speeds being zero RPM.

Boring? Boring?? There's nothing boring about 40 to 50 mpg in a
car with an outstanding repair record.
And if you're a DIYer, working on an older Prius would be far less
boring than working on these diesels that we were tired of working
on long ago. Of course, you young peoples attitude is
understandable since you haven't been driving and fixing diesels for
46 years like some of us have.

Gerry

Nothing new with 40 to 50 MPG. That was 30+ years ago on 35 to 100
year old technology. Escort Diesel got 50mpg. Wabbit Diesel got
45-50. Quantum got 45 mpg fully loaded going 70 MPH. I never
checked it for absolute max, but it probably could hit 50 too.
Don't need no stinking battery boat to get 50 MPG.

Does an SDL use the same electric vacuum pump system like a 201?

My '98 Jetta was popping a fuse when I first got it, that car almost the exact
same pump my 201 does. I unplugged the vacuum pump (hidden in the trunk) and
the problem went away. Replaced the pump and the problem didn't come back
although I did discover a bad vacuum line (heard it) but I can't actually find
the line to replace it as its buried in the dash somewhere. I haven't spent all
that much time on it, thats a project for this summer.

My Jetta returns driving excitement and a consistent 46mpg (average over 7,000
miles). The Prius is one of the least fun cars I've ever been in. They're ugly,
slow and not really all that efficient compared to a TDI.

Their outstanding repair record is an anecdotal accident, if you sit somebody
down and really get an honest picture of how much time they spend in the shop
its worse than a Camry. In fact most people with a Prius would probably be
better off with a Camry. Fools buy them to commute on the highway where their
mileage goes DOWN. They pay a premium and then don't get anywhere near the
mileage they think they're getting. Rare is the Prius driver that gets 50mpg,
40 is much more common. Worst tank ever out of my TDI was 45mpg and I had the
IP resealed (fuel is lost during the project of course) during that time.

And the car handles fine. I drove it all winter at 40psi and never had any more

actually preferable, it cuts down through the snow.

The car also has seats from a K2 Jetta. They're race inspired with extra
bolstering which transmits shocks a little more. I think new shocks might help
a little though. Around here the harsher ride isn't such a big deal, it was on

Solar has certain advantages, as peak production matches with peak demand during

[MBZ] W124 Trunk Latch

2014-03-23 Thread Dan Penoff
Just got done sorting out the eldest son's trunk latch and thought I would post
my findings.

The complaint was that the trunk lid would not open when pushing the lock
cylinder in as expected, and simply pulling up on the trunk lid would release
the lid. In other words, the trunk wasn't secure.

Getting the latch out wasn't a big ordeal. Pretty much consisted of:

Removing the plastic trim piece covering the bottom of the trunk opening and
the lower back wall by prying the square plastic rivets out.

Pushing in the plunger on the vacuum element to release the actuator rod.

Unplugging the harness to the microswitch on the trunk latch.

Unscrewing the three 10mm bolts that hold the latch on the body.

It was a bit of a puzzle as to how to get the latch out of the body, but by
twisting and turning along with pressing the lock cylinder I got it out. Tight
fit, but be patient, it can be done. Pay close attention to the white plastic
lever on the bottom of the latch that the central locking vacuum actuator rod
is connected to. Looks like it would be easy to break off during removal if
you're not careful.

Once the latch was removed, I was perplexed as to how to disassemble it. There
are no obvious fasteners other than a couple of rods that are peened into place
as pivots for the latch and the mechanism. Hmm.

I could tell that the back half of the latch, the part that contained the latch
itself, was a separate part from the rest, and that it was slid or pressed in
place from the top down onto the rest of the mechanism, mainly the part with
the lock cylinder.

I tried gently prying, and eventually the latch portion just came off from the
top. From close inspection it does not appear that there are any latches or
clips, it just presses into place.

Once apart I could see the problem right away.

Water had gotten into the latch and cause the latch hook, the metal piece
that hooks around the loop from the trunk lid, and another lever next to it
that locked the latch into place were rusted to the point where they wouldn't
move despite having a spring on both to keep them in a given position.

A liberal soaking with some penetrating lube followed by some 3M Adhesive
Remover (gawd, I love that stuff!) to remove the residue and things were
beginning to loosen up. While the penetrating lube was working I was moving
the levers back and forth rapidly to get things down into the nooks and
crannies as well as to free things up.

A few drops of 20W machine oil on the pivots and all was pretty much back to
normal. The trunk latch lever still doesn't want to return on its own, but
that really doesn't affect the operation of the latch.

IMPORTANT STEP:

Before reinstalling the latch and making adjustments, I removed the left rear
taillight. This way, should the latch decide to hang up, fail, or otherwise
not work after reinstalling it, we had access to the trunk. This is a critical
and necessary step any time you are working on a trunk latch or related
mechanism!

Got it all back together, tried it out, and trunk releases and latches as
intended.

And now I am enjoying a cold beverage while sharing my experience with you.

I'm thinking they're probably GE 1.7-100s headed for Consumers Energy's

Just got done sorting out the eldest son's trunk latch and thought I would
post my findings.

The complaint was that the trunk lid would not open when pushing the lock
cylinder in as expected, and simply pulling up on the trunk lid would
release the lid. In other words, the trunk wasn't secure.

Getting the latch out wasn't a big ordeal. Pretty much consisted of:

Removing the plastic trim piece covering the bottom of the trunk opening
and the lower back wall by prying the square plastic rivets out.

Pushing in the plunger on the vacuum element to release the actuator rod.

Unplugging the harness to the microswitch on the trunk latch.

Unscrewing the three 10mm bolts that hold the latch on the body.

It was a bit of a puzzle as to how to get the latch out of the body, but
by twisting and turning along with pressing the lock cylinder I got it
out. Tight fit, but be patient, it can be done. Pay close attention to
the white plastic lever on the bottom of the latch that the central
locking vacuum actuator rod is connected to. Looks like it would be easy

they wouldn't move despite having a spring on both to keep them in a given

Well, not motor oil, but they do have the least expensive olive oil

Re: [MBZ] Wind Power

2014-03-23 Thread G Mann
Wind power, developed on a commercial scale, has serious economic flaws.
While much political and environmental noise is made about how clean it is
and how it will save the environment/world, if you truly put the
accountant pencil to paper, the cost to purchase, build, install, connect
versus the return on investment from actual power generated and sold does
not pay out.

To date, from the information I have, no wind power farm has produced
enough electricity sold to pay for it's install and upkeep costs much less
produce a profit without constant influx of federal support grants and
money. When the federal money runs out, the wind farm is left breathless
to continue on a practical economic scale.

Bottom line always is, the wind blows when it blows while people want their
electricity constant and there is no way yet devised to store huge amounts
of generated electricity for later use. Major flaw is all wind farm designs
and wind farm tech support.

If however, we could keep congress in session and all politicians talking,
we would have an endless source of hot air that could be harnessed that
might be a viable use of an otherwise worthless expense.

I've been following wind power rather closely since the 1973 Great Oil
Embargo and formation of OPEC. One of the first large scale wind farms is
the one at Banning, CA. Some of the original wind generators are still
there, and it's my information that those, since 1974 install still have
not paid for themselves in actual KW produced and sold.

I have two wind towers at my ranch, tied into the solar/battery bank as
supplemental power to pick up a few watts of energy when the wind blows.
Each tower cost about $5K all in and other than I can claim how green I
am for having them, they have not produced enough to warrant their install
in real return on investment.

Actually, the venue is one of the nicest outdoor amphitheaters in the area,
which just happens to be on the property of the State Fairgrounds. Used to be
the 1-800-Axe-Gary Amphitheater, believe it or not (I'm doing that
phonetically so readers can appreciate the true flavor of the name.) Can't say
they were in a hurry to renew that contract, I'll bet.

That being said, you know things have tanked badly when bands start playing the
fair circuits. A lot of the Seals and Crofts featuring Seals from the
original band seem to hit the road when people get hard up for cash. I think
Three Dog Night was touring a couple of years ago with only one of the original
band members...

I'm not to the point in my life where I'm having to eat cat food. Sorry.

I'm sure their stuff is good, I just don't understand why people get all frothy

We have a Fresh Market opening up a few blocks away in April. Supposed to be a
high end market focusing mainly on meats and produce. Publix (right across the
street) is not happy. They have ratcheted up their marketing in the
neighborhood.

There is a meat market right next door to the place, too. We're taking bets to
see how long they last once it opens.

Doesn't a hole in an aluminum casting get smaller when you heat the
casting?

No.

As to how it works, the coefficient of expansion of Al is greater than that
of steel (12.3 vs. 7.3). When the head expands, all dimensions of the head
expand at the same rate, so the holes enlarge as well.

The way I am reading this you used some sort of penetrator fluid?
Would this not cool off the plugs, thus defeating the purpose of the
exercise in warming the plugs up to operating temp?

I believe the idea was to have the aluminum head hot so that it expanded
around the steel plug.

I'm not sure how that works, however.

Re: [MBZ] Wind Power

2014-03-23 Thread Scott Ritchey

One niche where wind power does make sense is cruising sailboats,
particularly at anchor or on a mooring. In that case the only alternatives
for battery charging are solar cells (low output) or running the engine
(even more noisy). At anchor, wind (unobstructed by land features) is
frequently available and the occupants (being cruisers) can adjust their
schedules to accommodate power availability. I sold my Cape Dory when I
moved inland to the NC Piedmont in 2005.

Most electricity is still generated from coal.

Actually not true. According to the US Energy Information Admin. only 37%
of US electricity was produced from coal in 2012. I am sure that percentage
is declining annually.

That cost still is never included in any cost/benefit analyses. We

Excellent point Scott,

Wind power as a small scale, personal use application, certainly has strong
points. On a commercial scale to supply power for say NYC... not currently
practical, if ever. My units at the ranch likely make enough power to run

keeping.

One niche where wind power does make sense is cruising sailboats,

frequently available and the occupants (being cruisers) can adjust their
schedules to accommodate power availability. I sold my Cape Dory when I

For a beach excursion you book at the edge of the cruise port. They'll haggle

I've read several historical accounts of WW1 pilots who flew and fought in
the open cockpit, castor oil lubricated airplanes of the era. Apparently
constant and extreme bowl movements were part of the price you paid to be
brave enough to fly the airplanes.

Several accounts are written about how much weight they lost and how truly
sick they became, between the poor sanitation of the day, and the constant
breathing of castor oil. Brave takes a new meaning.

The cars today are heavier as result of the efforts to make them less fatal
in crashes. Hence they burn more fuel to travel the same distance at the
same rate. To get them back up to 40 - 50 mpg is rather remarkable.

[MBZ] Way OT: Furniture restoration questions

I picked up a stunning Danish mid century rosewood coffee table for a good
price but the top is marred in places with a cloudy discoloration, probably
a result of setting down wet objects on the surface (which has a dark
varnished finish). Murphy's oil soap and cleaner didn't do anything for
these spots, but a friend recommended I try vaseline with a vinegar
chaser. Surprisingly, this did some good, but there are still cloudy areas
(also some scratches, but those are near the corner and not
objectionable).

On the under side of the table (unfinished) the PO's kids had a field
day(s) writing with crayons and/or colored ball point pen ink. How do I
remove these?

IIRC someone on this list is experienced in furniture restoration (Rich?).
Advice always appreciated.

You need to find out what the finish is first. If it's truly varnish, there
are any number of ways to get the milky discoloration out.

For the bottom the Magic Eraser stuff works well on things like this, and if
that doesn't remove it, try WD-40 on a cloth (don't spray it directly on the
wood!) and follow it up with some baking soda rubbed into the wood with a cloth.

Re: [MBZ] Wind Power

2014-03-23 Thread Rich Thomas
So wayy back when I and myu colleagues did the first insurance
analysis for commercial wind turbines. There was a Boeing machine and a
Hamilton Standard machine (I can't remember if that was their own, but
they built the blades for it). (this was the one we were assessing.)
These were like 5MW machines and they were located near Medicine Bow,
Wyoming, out in the middle of nowhere but the wind blew well there.
Went there in like March or so, it was cold as hell and the wind was
blowing big. The nacelle sat 250ft high, blades were 250ft diameter so
like 125 each. Spinner they mounted to was about 8ft diameter, a very
large single casting. Blades could be feathered and were hollow to
crawl out inside should inspection and repairs be required.

The nacelle was maybe 12'W x 24'L x 10 high and contained the gearbox
and generator and power handling/transfer equipment. There was a hatch
on top you could climb out to the top, which I did (cold, windy maybe
25kt at that time...).

When they first turned the machine on and started to spin it up, it ran
on up and was putting out 5MW no problem. Then someone outside the
control room noticed the blades were bending FORWARD as was the tower.
STOPSTOPSTOP! Then they get a call from the BPA asking why the site
was suddenly drawing 5MW off their grid, whatthehell was going on?
Turns out there were 2 errors -- the wiring on the machine was reversed
and the power meter had also been reversed. So while the operators
thought it was putting out 5MW it was really drawing 5MW and running as
a giant fan. OOPS.

THey got that fixed and it went to do whatever it did.

Toured the blade production facility which was in CT. Hamilton Standard
had built what was pretty much a giant lathe with a mandrel of the
blade's shape onto which was wound miles and miles of fiberglass string
impregnated with the epoxy. The spool just went back and forth winding
the stuff onto the mandrel. It was very messy but worked well. Then
they would pull the blade off the mandrel and ship them out to WY or
wherever.

The tax credit deal expired at some point and the wind machine bidness
expired with it, not sure whatever happened to the machine or the
production facility. I vaguely recall they built a few of them but
don't remember the details.

Hamilton Standard never had a propeller fail in service due to
manufacturing defects, over decades of manufacturing. They were very
proud of that.

What Dan said. I don't do restoration. I ha e heard spreading
mayonnaise on the white areas, which I guess is the oil in it doing
something. No telling what the finish is, varnish or oil or shellac or
something else. Worse comes, do some stripping then do an oil or
varnish finish (I lay down several very thin coats, varnish + thinner,
with a rolled up cotton rag).

Re: [MBZ] People are generally holding on

2014-03-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I suspect, given the number of digests I've yet to digest I'm late to the party
but:
Doesn't the increase in house value give you incentive? I suspect its not equal
to what you'd pay for the panels but they're kind of like trees, you plant
trees for the next generation, not for yourself.

Anyway the price of solar panels has plummeted in the last few years. 10 years
ago you'd pay $400 for a 100watt panel, today you'll pay about $150. We're
looking at putting some solar on the cabin in Maine. Mostly for one light and
the range hood. Maybe someday enough to run a small, efficient fridge. The
fear, of course, its that somebody will bring in a television...

Northwestern Indiana has a huge number of wind turbines, most of which are just
north of Lafayette and follow I-65 north to the Tri State area.

I would love to have solar here, as it makes a lot of sense.  The big problem
is the up front costs, and little is being done to help with that.  Not only
that, but with a lengthy payback period, if I take out a second mortgage to pay
for it, for example, I lose all advantages if I sell the house before
everything is depreciated out.

I think you're confusing big oil profit and gas station profit which are
not the same thing as gas stations are mostly independently owned. Forbes puts
big oil's margin at around 6% which is pretty rotten but a good sight better
than the actual retailers.

people are becoming pretty we informed about the big Oil profit being
around 3%.  Lower than virtually all other industries.  The people
really raking the money via gas sales is the government - state and
Federal!

Re: [MBZ] Wind Power

Every year it makes a little more sense. The price of oil hasn't gone down
dramatically in the last decade, not likely to go that way with the excitement
in Ukraine.

Excellent point Scott,

Wind power as a small scale, personal use application, certainly has strong
points. On a commercial scale to supply power for say NYC... not currently
practical, if ever.  My units at the ranch likely make enough power to run
the refrig and a ham radio, some LED lights, so in survival mode, worth
keeping
