[MBZ] OT - another non-political B-52 tale - RAIL YARD
RAIL YARD 45 NM SW HANOI By Wilton Strickland The night of 21 Dec '72, my target was a major rail transshipment yard about 45 nautical miles southwest of Hanoi. SAM and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) activity in this area was relatively light. In fact, this mission was so routine that I remember little about it, and my recording of it has been destroyed (recorded over by a teenage son 35 years ago, I suspect). This night was anything but routine for many of the other BUFFs, however. Two were lost to SAM's. During the withdrawal, I heard John Graham, co-pilot on my Kincheloe crew, flying as a substitute with another crew, report to Red Crown, the Navy ship monitoring all air traffic in North Vietnam, We just lost Blue 02. He blew up right in front of me. (Destroyed by a SAM.) During the latter stages of our withdrawal, the gunner reported a bandit (fighter) approaching us rapidly from the rear. Enemy fighters had joined several formations of B-52's, possibly to aid ground defenses in tracking, and B-52 gunners had shot down two of them. Our gunner was locked on the fighter approaching us and was prepared to fire. Just as the fighter came within range, however, we heard a frantic call on the radio, Your bandit is friendly; your bandit is friendly! Gunner replied, Okay, you were about to 'get' it, you'd better speak up a little sooner! The American F-4 quickly departed to do business elsewhere. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. I show them available form the dealer for around $200 for the set of engine (motor) mounts: Left - 123 241 50 13 $82 Right - 123 241 4113 $127 Transmission mount: There are a number of variants of this part. The OE parts are super expensive for some reason, like over $200. I would look for a good brand on the secondary market, such as Lemforder. No guarantees, but better than a URO. Whenever possible, ALWAYS go for OE rubber, suspension or brake parts. These are parts you may never replace again, so why be cheap and risk getting a crappy part that will fail? Re: [MBZ] Motor mounts
Looks like Meyle makes the transmission mounts for far less than OE prices, but I would still try to find something better. To give you an idea of the crap that's out there, the URO version can be had for around $10. Meyle takes you up in the low $20 range, as does Febi/Bilstein. What does that tell you? And how could they possibly make a quality part like this for $10 and make a profit on it? While he's at it, has he checked the differential mount? Probably not. That's an often overlooked piece of drivetrain support. [MBZ] 240D exhaust
The 240D got loud today. Discovered the patch pipe just to the rear of the bend in the downpipe was cracking at the weld. Further investigation led to a thumb sized hole on the inside. Well, it needs a new pipe...Same as it did maybe 15 years ago. I took two hose clamps and a piece of heavy flashing that I have been tempted to throw out several times, but saved for some reason. Put the car up on ramps, crawled under, wrapped the flashing around, put the hose clamps on it and tightened up the clamps. Diesel Muffler bandaid 101. It will probably last for 5 years, then I will replace the flashing again. That should be good until 2024. 123 Diesels are great, but I love the OM603 too! Oh, By the way, 15 years ago, I didn't buy a new pipe. That is when the patch pipe was welded in. The message displayed should inspire officers who pursue you after passing through speed traps, bank robberies, and other sundry motoring violations.. ;) To bad someone doesn't come up with a nice LED board that could be programmed with various messages such as Thank You, Yield NOW ! , Dim your lights or die [OK perhaps that's to strong], but you get the idea. Perhaps, it could even be keyed to voice commands so you didn't have to look away from the traffic to switch it on/off. Greg, I thought of the same idea 20 years ago. Re: [MBZ] Rear Sunshade Modification
If Mr. P mounts a couple of 50s facing rearward to match his 4 front facing ones, then has the sign I bet people would back off. At least the ones who recognize the barrel of a 50 would. The ghetto babes probably would not. Greg, I thought of the same idea 20 years ago.
