Re: [MBZ] OT: Secure Storage, was Transcoding LPs to Digital
Hard drives take a mixture of 12v and 5v don't they?A quick search suggests thats true and that they'll want between 8w and 11w for a 3.5 drive with 2.5 drives only wanting 5v and something like 5w. A 12v to USB adapter provides 5v and its not hard to find one that goes to 3a. With no fan to spin thats got to be more efficient than an inverter to get me to 110v then back down to 5v for the drive. Surge power is apparently way less on a 2.5 drive, the 3.5 can supposedly need up to 30W. For my purposes (ie the PI living at camp as a security monitoring system) I don't need much for drives, a 64GB SD card would be way more than sufficient. The plan would be to set it up on a motion sensor so if a miscreant steps into the camp it lights him up, takes his picture, uploads that to the web, emails me and plays a warning Leave immediately, your picture has already been sent to the authorities. I figure we should take another picture of the criminal, imagine, you've broken into a back woods cabin late at night, everything is dark and still, then suddenly it lights up like daytime and a mysterious voice starts talking to you... We'll probably never do it, we don't have much vandalism anymore with our new good neighbors looking after the place but I think it'd be hilarious to scare an intruder... -Curt From: Jim Cathey jim.cathey...@gmail.com To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, December 5, 2014 11:10 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Secure Storage, was Transcoding LPs to Digital No need for an inverter, using 12v should save a fair amount of overhead. It would, but you still would have to power the disks. They don't eat 12V directly. (Not exclusively, anyhow.) It's getting to the point where the charge controller is more expensive than the panel. You don't really need a charge controller if you don't have to maximize the power transfer from the panel to the battery. A voltage regulator would do it! If a 25% bigger panel covers the inefficiency, and is cheaper than the controller, well... -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. The lowest is 3 - 4 from the ground to discourage ground hogs and raccoons. The next three wires are about 1' apart. Then a gap to the top wire which is about 6' from the ground and is not electrified. The theory being if the deer is jumping over the top wire the animal won't be grounded anyway. In fact I have never seen one try that jump. What I have observed is the deer head down grazing weeds and touching the bottom wire with its nose - it jumps back and shakes its head as if stung by a bee. After that it keeps away from the fence. BTDT. The idea behind this is to get a good picture and scare the bejeezus out of the thief with the ability to upload in real time in case the thief decides to try to disable the camera. I also think the idea of scaring them is really funny. :)It could also be a weather station and with a couple cameras could tell if there was for instance too much snow to make it worth trying to get into camp for an early winter or early spring trip. Like I said I'll probably never build it, mostly just an intellectual exercise. I see that Amazon's pricing algorithm has brought the price of the 100w panel back to $185 for me, interesting... -Curt From: Tim Crone bb...@crone.us To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, December 8, 2014 1:40 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Secure Storage, was Transcoding LPs to Digital On Mon, Dec 8, 2014 at 10:40 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: For my purposes (ie the PI living at camp as a security monitoring system) I don't need much for I love to DIY, but around here game cameras go on sale after deer season for very low prices. Re: [MBZ] OT: Secure Storage, was Transcoding LPs to Digital
I just received the WD NAS: First impressions, the disks are indeed the WD red series. The cost of the NAS with disks was not much more than I would have paid for the bare drives. I will have to test the drives thoroughly as some reviewers have experienced a high failure rate (A bad batch? A dropped pallet?) The unit looks well engineered, the drives are easily removable without tools. Scott advised that I was mistaken on the Synology 100 Mb Ethernet; I may have been misled by a comparison chart on Amazon. Nonetheless I am so far pleased. Time will tell whether the interface and performance will be up to expectations. I looked at Synology products but finally opted for a WD 8 TB My Cloud NAS. The price and small form factor were appealing, and I understand that these now are equipped with WD red series HDDs. My experiences with WD products has been good in the past. Another factor in my decision was that the WD has gigabit Ethernet as opposed to the 100 Mb of the Synology. This looked to me to be the best bang for buck. A smaller disk size would probably have worked for my needs, but the additional cost for the larger size was not much. The 8 TB was actually cheaper than the 6 TB. I'm not sure that the remote access features are needed for my family, but then I don't need to enable them. I will provide follow up on this if any of you are interested. After researching storage options to a level of detail I never planned, I came to much the same conclusion. If I was going with an off the shelf solution it would be Synology. FreeNAS was really attractive, given the high level of configurability it offered. Since I had an existing NAS, a DLink NAS-345 running five drives in RAID 5, I have continued to use it. However, realizing that a single volume RAID 5 setup did not provide the redundancy and setup I desired, I wiped it and went to four drives in a Mirrored RAID configuration with two volumes. So I have two separate volumes, each running on two mirrored drives. This gives me the integrity and redundancy desired for my files for now. It also gives me a performance gain over the previous single volume RAID 5 arrangement as well. Not perfect, but it meets my needs. I pull the mirrors once a month and rotate them out with another drive. The current drives go in the fire safe. Very cheap and simple, it all happens when I'm asleep, and I have three or four copies of everything. when one disk dies, I just replace it, and it gets auto brought up to date. I fought with SANs, NASs, and RAID at work for years, didn't want to mess with it at home. I used to do something similar, but recent viruses have taken to destroying files in all online storage devices (then charging a bitcoin ransom for the recovery key, which may or may not work). I have thought about investing in a tape drive (which is ironic given my employer :) but in practice I just keep a USB disk offline, and bring it up occasionally to do the replication. The problem with rotating storage is that it needs to be spinning to keep working, so I can't leave it in a drawer and expect it to work. There were some good deals on 64G USB sticks last week, but I didn't buy any since I don't have a good plan for using them. Anyway, given the state of viruses, I would definitely recommend keeping a solid-state backup - flash, or DVD, or an offline disk - rather than depending on a system that uses Windows shares. To the original post, Synology is a good choice for low power, low noise, high configurability, reasonable cost and reliability. If you roll your own, I have to agree with Dan that FreeNAS is the way to go. If you are willing to lose some abilities, many of the 802.11ac routers have USB ports that will accept a USB drive (or even multiple drives) and expose Windows and NFS shares. Merry Christmas to all, Tim

I removed the windshield wipers and the air intake grille, and lubricated the blower fan. (Again. Has it really been eight years?) Got my wrist all scraped up, again. I hate this job. I used Mobil 1 5W20 motor oil. The pot-metal casting for the passenger-side windshield wiper blade broke while I was putting it back. Evil stuff, that pot metal.
