I'm thinking of investing $70 in Eset, an antivirus program that was
top rated in Consumers Reports in 2010. Either that or "really"
biting the bullet and switching to a Linux program or Apple.

Overpriced, and crappy and make you buy a new printer because they

Curly,
I just installed an HP printer on my Mac (after
the ink nozzle failed on my previous one).
Have you tried going to System Preferences/
Hardware/Print & Scan? On my Mac, that window
has a +/- thing on the left side of the window
that allows adding or removing a printer. When I
did + it gave me a new screen to add in the new
printer. Hope you have good luck. It can be
frustratingŠ

Yes, that was the first thing i tried. no
printer showed up. Finally unplugged the USB
cable at the printer and plugged it in again, and
the printer showed up. (Both mac and ubuntu
machines.) Now it only prints blank pages.
'Nother problem.

It wasted the first half day cleaning itself and
trashing cartridges. Before that, I had to take
out the memory and plug it back in to get rid of
the 79 error after several unsuccessful restarts.
Wasted most of the day and still have no working
color printer.

North-western part off the state, hours from where I grew up. I did go to a
summer camp at Rice Lake, don't recall if that was a church camp or an outdoor
leadership camp. I think the former, went there a couple summers. Had no idea
there was a stock car race track. I guess baptists don't do stock cars?

Also went to Hayward several winters for a big cross-country ski race.

I bought a 40 twenty years ago, forest land near Rib Lake. Paid $15k, I think
now it may be worth $65k. Haven't done a thing with it,.visit a few times,
that's all. Really need too sell that and buy some land close to Charleston,
follow Kaleb's example and start buying more cars.

Curly,
Not sure what problem you're having.  I've been running an HP2840 since
Win98 to WinXP and now Win7.  It installs better under XP if you have the
install disk which uses the web setup to install everything correctly (scanner,
fax, etc.).  Sometimes the web setup runs into conflict with your modem/router
because of the assigned address the setup wants to use for the printer.  I
don't use the scanner on Win7, but the print/copy/fax work just fine using the
Win7 Pro drivers.  Contact me off line if you want and I might be able to help
you.

Re: [MBZ] Korean malware FIXED

2015-02-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
When I started working for the schools back in 2000 I was charged with
identifying the best network printers we could purchase for my campus. The
District had a contract with Lexmark at the time, but the funds we had at my
school were discretionary, meaning we could spend them on whatever we wanted
and weren't bound by purchase agreements.

I did my due diligence and found that the HP4050N was considered a real
workhorse, so I ordered 12 of them. We got a bunch of flack from Purchasing
over buying something off contract, but fortunately my principal respected my
advice and pretty much told them to stick it.

Today, at least nine of those printers are still in service. They've had
hundreds of thousands of pages through them, had complete service kits put in
them several times over, and they just keep churning out the pages.

When I went looking for a network printer for the house some years back I knew
it would be an HP4000 series model.

I found a guy over in St. Pete who refurbishes them, and bought one off of him
for around $75. I took it to our printer tech at the school district and had
him check it out, and he gave it a clean bill of health. It's been sitting in
my office since, running flawlessly.

Oh - one VERY important thing to consider with these printers - ALWAYS use
genuine HP toner cartridges. I bought one new in the box off eBay when I got
the printer, and it's still in there.

It's been working great for 15 years now. We have installed one new toner
cartridge. We print everything on it, including all our Christmas letters.

The only difficulty is that the NIC stops listening after a couple
minutes of no network activity. I fixed that by putting in a startup
script that pings the printer once per second (boot the computer to get
the ping going and then turn on the printer), so I have not had to replace
that. It developed that problem just as I was preparing my presentations

No, not everyone needs a capsulotomy.

I don't remember the number; sorry.

Had it been caught before the vitreous became opaque enough to not let
the laser light pass through, it would have been much less. As it was,
they had to do a vitrectomy (removing the vitreous and replacing it with
saline solution) immediately followed by laser surgery. Twice.

That I understand.

Regedit is still alive and well through Windows 7. I can't speak for Windows 8

8 when I was at the school district because we had to use it to manage Windows
2012 servers and their VMs.

Stuff like this is a moving target that takes three people and tens of
thousands of dollars of very sophisticated equipment to protect our
organization from such incursions. The worst part of it is that the authors
will take one piece of malware or a virus/trojan, whatever, and make a minor
tweak to the code that can prevent it from being seen or detected by even the
best antivirus software.

We are a "gold" Symantec customer due to the number of files we submit to them
for further inspection EVERY DAY.

I would add that we use geoblocking as well - that is, blocking IPs and domains
that are in parts of the world that are known to be vectors for this stuff. No
reason why we should be getting any traffic from those parts of the world,
anyway.

It's job security, man.

[MBZ] Korean malware FIXED

2015-02-04 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
The Korean malware, which had overloaded memory, blocked malwarebytes, and
slowed Win7 to a crawl, but still allowed the email and search engines to
function, has been removed; hopefully for good.
Esets scanner found its location but would only remove it if one subscribed to
Eset for $70.

It was invisible to Avg, MS Security programs, and the usual "fixits" on Win7
and other programs from the 'net.
Although it was visibly present on the MSconfig startup list, I hesitated to
try and remove it myself since that can often make removal more difficult or
impossible without wiping the HD. None of the antivirus websites on the 'net
seemed to know anything about it.

I finally decided to "bite the bullet" and try removing it myself.
After spending probably an hour on every removal workaround I could think of,
and jeopardizing my chances of going to that great workshop in the sky some day
due to the foulest profanity, SUCCESS! North (or South) Koreas evil geniuses
have been defeated; no thanks to Malwarebytes $40 program.

I'm thinking of investing $70 in Eset, an antivirus program that was top rated
in Consumers Reports in 2010. Either that or "really" biting the bullet and
switching to a Linux program or Apple.
Gerry

Just now got a pop up that one or more aspects of Malewarebytes have been
disabled with a button to push for enable. I pushed the button.
Gerry

Been getting message from MS program that I'm low on memory.
Accessed msconfig, and at the top of the page appeared the word "Korean". The
next line had the symbol for "type configuration setting" with the address:
C:\users\archer\mydocuments\.

Right clicking the symbol brought up 29 pages of Korean characters.

I'm running Malwarebytes (paid for professional program), AVG antivirus, and MS
firewall.

A quick search of Google had nothing specific about this being known malware,
and this blog was the only reference I found that might apply:

2015-02-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not a lot you can do with malware like this. If you don't have the skills to
dig under the hood, you have to rely on tools like MalwareBytes, that's all.

I do this for a living, and it would be no different than asking a doctor to
diagnose someone over the phone. Without being there and having direct
control, it's near impossible to make recommendations.

Sorry.

Re: [MBZ] 300td pretty cheap

2015-02-04 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
That is not just "clean" however. That is a matter of putting $$$ in on
a regular basis.
Any paint issues must be attended to and and any interior wear has to be
dealt with.
Neither of those items are things that most of us can do ourselves in a
competent manner and it is expensive to have professional work done.
My old 300D looks pretty good from a distance but I know where the
blemishes are and it could certainly use some paint repair and interior
work.
I had the front seats repadded but the upholstery is showing its age.
The back seat needs to be repadded as it is crunchy and will soon pose
more problems if it is not attended to.

The carpet is about done. It is crunchy too and easily broken.
So, how much money do I pour into it? It runs fine and I enjoy it. If I
put $10K into it, I doubt I would increase its value for sale by $10K.
Sometimes it just makes more sense to leave it be. And that is likely
what has happened with these cars that you see for sale. People have
enjoyed them but are ready to move on and they are not going to pump a
bunch of money in now when they want to get out of it altogether.
So, you have to be realistic. If you are looking for a project and are
willing to put the $$$ in, then go for it.
If you are looking for a cheap beater daily driver, then don't complain
that the previous owner did not "keep it up". If they had "kept it up"
you would think it was too expensive and look for something cheaper.
These are not 5 year old cars. They are generally at least 15 to 30
years old. My 300D is 39 years old and I think, in pretty good shape for
a car that age that has not been "restored".
My 2002 F150 Supercrew that my younger son now has, is only 13 years old
and it shows wear. The truck was a Lariat level model and has leather
seating. Both front buckets have worn spots that should be attended to.
There are rust holes in the rocker panels on both sides and in the cab
corners. Apart from that, it is really pretty good but once again, we
are talking some pretty decent $$ to fix those things properly and this
is a truck wtih 190K miles on it. My son is a mechanic and he will
likely put another 100K miles on it and repair whatever it needs along
the way but he is unlikely to spend a whole lot on the cosmetic items.
He drives it as his daily driver and it is more important to him that it
be reliable than pretty.

It is possible to drive a car and still keep it clean. My BMW has
215,000 miles on it and it is clean. Not as clean as it once was, but lots
of cars have been driven a lot and still look good. My old 300D 2.5 that
OK Don bought had something like 250-265,000 miles and it was VERY clean.
You don't have to be Dan (aka Martha Stewart) to keep a car clean. Hell,
you don't even have to do it yourself. You can go to the car wash! Or a
detail shop? Or pay the neighbor kid to do it.

Looks like the next fancier model of ours. Ours doesn't have the tilt mechanism

I know you have some 123 wagons, so I hope you are being funny!

I would really like to have a bunch of the old MB's. Obviously any of the
190SL, 300SL, or the 280SL (with Pagoda roof), the 280 SE Cabriolet, and many
others. A 300SEL 6.3 and any 600 (W100) would be a spectacular addition to any
MB collection! In the future I think the 450SEL 6.9 will start to increase in
value quickly, and I think 20 years from now we will be seeing the 124 500E

Re: [MBZ] Snowmaggeddon Part Deux

2015-02-04 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I think it is a matter of what one is clearing and what the wind is doing.
I usually don't turn either. It just seems easier to shift into reverse
and walk it backwards.
I don't have a big area to clear and am limited in terms of where I can
blow the snow so maybe that is an issue too.
I think the biggest downside of backing it up is that it does not go
fast enough in reverse. It has 2 reverse speeds but even the faster one
is slower than I can easily walk.
The biggest area I ever clear is behind our garage and it is on a back
lane so I can really only blow the snow straight ahead either to the
north or south. I cannot really blow much accross the lane as it would
be up against my neighbor's fence or garage door. One of the problems
with city living is the lack of space for snow.
Thankfully, we have had little of it so far this winter. Last year we
had more than our normal amount so we are hopefully going to break even
this year with less than normal.
I repaired the blower in the fall so that I was ready. Perhaps that was
what saved us? I had to replace the cable that controls the height at
which the snow blows out of the chute and clean and rebuild the carb
which had become gunked up enough that the motor would only run if one
kept the choke partly on.

I too have an Ariens -= 27 inch cut and probably about 8 HP too. I had
an older smaller one with a 5 HP that was a good machine but it just
would not blow the snow far enough so I upgraded a bit.
Have to stay small enough to get through my gates and turn some sharp
corners so that I can do the front walk and the back and out through the
walkway between our garage and the neighbor's garage to do behind the
garage.

The debate about turning versus backing up is an eternal one, I was running it
through my head while I was cleaning. Angie periodically does the turn and
forgets to turn the spout thus defeating the purpose. My neighbor has a
snowblower with an electric spout so he can be turning the spout while turning
around for big time savings. I don't mind walking backwards...

Yeah, it does look pretty cool -- pun intended.

What make and model of snow blower?

How many horsepower? (I see something in your garage -- your air
compressor, I think -- is 2.5 HP and 21 gallons.)

Why all the backward movement when you are blowing to the side?
Why not turn around, turn the spout, and keep on going?

Re: [MBZ] 71 220 Poor car

2015-02-04 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
There were 220 and 230 in the /8 body (114/115) I think this is a
114. the 300Ds are 115

I think the 220s were dropped in the US by '72.

It could also be a RTW car, that was later brought into the USA.

Not all 220s were in 111 bodies. There were Pontons, unimogs,
Heckflosse, and /8, 123 and probably more in various parts of the
world. The carbureted 220 and 230 were popular engines for a long
time.
M180 6 cyl and I think there were also 4 cyl 220 engines. I am not
sure if that was M121 or a later engine.

111 had 220b and 220Sb, 220SEb as well as 230S, SE in the USA
110 had 190, 190Dc, 200, 200D, and 230 in the USA
108 had 250S, 280S 250SE, 280S, 280SE and engine variants in the USA models

Except that I don't think it's a 220. A 220 wouldn't have double
front bumpers and a wood dash.

Marionville is a small town outside of Springfield, Mo.

$3,000 for the set seems a bit much, since none run, one is missing an engine.

"slight rust" "ran when parked" "AC blows cold" ;))

OTOH, project cars of substance... perhaps..

Could it be a 250? My 71 250 had wood on the dash, I don't remember whether
it had the double bumper. Mine also had the shifter in the center console and
it didn't have the indicator on the dash.

I would think this could actually be a good deal. Someone with the time,
space, and skill could spend some sweat equity and they would come up with two

Re: [MBZ] Snowmaggeddon Part Deux

2015-02-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Remember that there is no differential in the snowblower, both wheels
turn together. Turning around requires macho snowblower dragging
strength and skill.

My Ariens _has_ a real differential. There's a pin to lock it,
if you want. I never do, having the diff is _so_ much better
than not. You don't have to wrestle the machine to steer it.

My old Gilson was weak, and could only throw well in one direction,
the one that preserved the angle the fan put on the snow. No
differential, either. Though old I thought it was well built,
until I got the (also old) Ariens.

The chute crank on the Ariens is easy to use while using one
hand to turn the machine around for a back pass. By the time
I'm turned around the chute is turned as well. (If necessary.)
There's an interlock that means you only need to hold the one
clutch lever down once you are going, freeing up the other hand
to run the chute crank. It also makes it easy to dodge any
wind-driven snow plumes.

My snowblower has a pin you can remove to disable drive (effectively giving a
differential) on one wheel, its useless one wheel alone pushes the snowblower
either not at all or at an angle...

That was also my question.  When mowing the lawn, I try to make circles instead
of going back and forth.  One can cover more ground more quickly that way.
Circles would be too hard with a snow blower, but back and forth, turning at
each end, would seem to be more efficient.

Re: [MBZ] Snowmaggeddon Part Deux

2015-02-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its an Ariens snowblower, 24" cut which is small but I think its an 8hp engine
which is big, it'll throw water if you feed it right which is good for those
heavy wet snowstorms.
