[MBZ] I buy a 1985 300CD

2015-03-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Its been a while since I've driven an 1985 car powered by an OM617a... I
never owned one, but I've driven several and was alway impressed. I always
considered a 1985 W123 to be the most refined of the bunch, and therefore
the most desirable.

I've heard a few folks on the list here say they avoid the last model year
for various reasons, but I don't really understand why. Sure there are a
few more vacuum lines under the hood, but no more than found on 1986-
cars. Acceleration off the line is outstanding, the transmission shifts
better than earlier cars, and the lower geared rear makes for a better
highway cruise.

I just brought this home:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/16743796931/in/photostream/

A 1985, 240k miles... a bit high for my tastes, but its second owner bough
the car in 1990 and has always serviced it at the dealer. Its had lots of
work done and really drives nicely. Of course, a few things to sort out
still... but a great car with original paint, super clean in terms of rust,
always garaged in NYC.

Buy it !!!

I'm sure SWMBO would LOVE it to go shopping and run errands with.
Convertible model even. Plenty of room with easy access.

We have a very active chapter of military vehicle collectors here, and when
I look at them, I'm impressed with two things. One is the near fanatical
care that has gone into restoring them to full operational status and Two,
the total lack of creature comforts designed into them for the poor dog
face who had to use them to go to war. I rise in respect to those veterans.

As for the posting.. it looks like a very nice example of a pretty rare
military vehicle. Fewer of them left in the world each year.

[MBZ] Repairing a chain hoist

2015-03-07 Thread Craig via Mercedes
My chain hoist started not holding a load without pulling on the chain,
so I finally took it apart. I found what caused Jim Cathey to say he
despises white lithium grease.

The pawl that locks the hoist with a load on it had been lubricated
with white lithium grease and was locked out of the way of the gear it's
supposed to engage. You can still see some residue from it on the post
shown on the right side in picture 5. I smeared the pawl with red grease
in picture 7 and installed it in picture 8.

Re: [MBZ] Aircraft sighting

2015-03-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Starting today, at Casa Grande, AZ is the Annual Cactus Fly in. It will run
through Sunday.

The Arizona Wing of CAF [formerly known as Confederate Air Force, until the
era of political correctness'] will be in attendance with a good sample of
it's collection of WW2 bombers and fighters.

For a price, you can purchase a seat and go for a ride.. For an even
greater price, you can take a turn in the co-pilot seat and actually be at
the controls [you will only fit in the seat after you remove your wallet
{trust me on this} ].

This airplane orgy usually brings a very fine sampling of the best antique
and special interest airplanes from many states, along with several
privately owned WW2 fighter aircraft, all in flying status.

These shots were taken at last years event, but give some example of what
you can walk up and touch [with owners permission of course].

Note the snow and ice, with heavy overcast Arizona style ;))

 Subject: [MBZ] Aircraft sighting

Sunday evening, driving along the tollway from i75 to orlando, I spied a
large aircraft going low and slow straight at us, apparently navigating by
tollway. (VFR) From a distance I could not make out much, but silhouette
and flight characteristics seemed similar to a B-17 limping home to england
during WWII. I kept thinking, Naaa can't be, then wondering if I was
hallucinating or in a time warp.

I was sure it had to be a piston engine plane, because of the speed. As
we closed eventually I could make out 4 engine nacelles, so the thoughts
were the same...B17... Naaa, can't be... am I in a time warp?

It got close enough to identify, and my heart leapt! It REALLY was a
 B-17!

As it passed over to the left, it appeared to be in 8th Air Force livery
I could not make out the identification letters, but it was definitely NOT
Aluminum Overcast as it was painted camouflage.

Definitely a rare and exciting sighting, especially straight on.

I am not sure how many examples are in flying condition, but this was one
of em. I was so Awestruck, I did not determine if it was an E, F, or G,
but I am 90% positive it was not a G, because I believe i'd have noticed
the chin turret. I was focused on trying to read the ID letters on the
 waist to determine the name.

I had an 84 that belonged to the son of a guy who was management in parts
distribution at Montvale (MBUSA).

It was a wicked car, and had tons of really nice updates and mods courtesy of
the parts system.

While a diesel coupe is not what most would consider a sporty car, with the
ALDA tweak it was a really fun car to drive.

Enjoy!

Re: [MBZ] Global warming? No, Global ice age.

2015-03-07 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
It is too simple -- the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide is that
it absorbs some wavelengths of IR and not others, so that heat from
the sun is trapped when IR radiation passes through the carbon dioxide
and heats the earth while re-radiated heat, at a different wavelength,
is absorbed or reflected back down.

Glass works much the same way, which is why greenhouses are so much
warmer during the day than wooden or metal buildings which allow the
heat to re-radiate right back out.

Methane has stronger absorbance at similar wavelengths than carbon
dioxide and is a stronger greenhouse gas.

Several years ago, I read articles about the magnetic poles flipping.  The
article described how the Earth's magnetic fields will weaken in areas allowing
the Sun's radiation to get through more strongly causing more skin cancer
cases.  I'm not a scientist, but I wonder if any of this is causing problems in
certain areas of the world and no one is talking about it because no amount of
money will stop or affect it.  The last chart/map I saw showed weakened
magnetic fields in the South Pacific towards Antarctica.
Is anyone else familiar with this and do you think it could be having negative
affects on the Earth's weather/climate/temperature (I've including 3, pick your
favorite).
Just some thoughts...

80-yr-old Weather Channel Founder Explains the History of the Global Warming
Fraud

John Coleman, 80-year-old award-winning meteorologist and founder of the
Weather Channel explains the history of the global warming fraud.

“Politics had gotten in the way of the science.” Coleman explains that there is
no man-made global warming, and he’s sure of it.

Coleman says:

“I love our wonderful planet Earth. If I thought it was threatened by global
warming, I would devote my life to stopping the warming!”

Now they call it “climate change” instead of global warming, because the
warming has stopped, says Coleman, and that $4.7 billion in taxpayer money is
funding “bogus reports” and “bogus research.”

At about 11:30, Coleman begins a detailed explanation about just how the global
warming fraud was started and heated up, including how Al Gore got involved in
the movement, TPNN reported.

radiation from the sun at the 15 micron wavelength (infrared). All of
that radiation is absorbed in the upper atmosphere. None reaches the
surface. In other words, all possible atmospheric warming due to CO2 is
already occurring. Increasing CO2 had no effect, because there is no more

The other day I was driving on I-26 here in SC and there was a largish
truck, might have been a tractor with a smaller trailer, down in the
median all mired up in the muck. You could see where, for whatever
reason, it had run off the road then stopped in the muck. There were 2
bubba trucks trying to pull it out, one with a tow strap on the tractor
and the other with a tow strap on the truck with the tow strap on the
tractor.

Both of the bubba trucks were also mired up and nothing had moved
anywhere. A total goat rodeo. There was a cop there, looking at all
this mess and trying to keep traffic impeded more. I figured it was
going to take one of those huge tractor-trailer tow trucks with a 200ft
cable to hook on to all of them and yank them out.

While a diesel coupe is not what most would consider a sporty car, with the
ALDA tweak it was a really fun car to drive.

 Enjoy!

[MBZ] Hi lift jack

2015-03-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So the hi lift jack, off road base, and lift mate arrived so I started around
10:30 this morning digging the truck out. Just now got done. That was a whore
of a job. I just don't think the real deal hi lift is as good of quality as
they used to be. After a while it because almost impossible after pumping the
handle down to get it back up, it kept catching on something. Then on one wheel
the plate kept sliding out and I ended up putting a big old dent in my truck.
Plenty of choice words were used. Anyway I finally got that pig out of the mud
and I am work plumb out.

2015-03-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Kaleb, its possible, but the reason they sell for so much is that they're
pretty good cars to start with, and I sort them out.

Most cars are for sale because something is about to break, or just did,
and people are tire of putting money into it. If people believe they're
buying something which has been serviced to provide a long life, they're
willing to pay more.

I'm not sure how long I'll keep this one. I might keep it as a driver and
sell the 300SD I have now. The 300SD isn't a bad car, but its not
especially nice or special either. I'm not really attached to it.

[MBZ] Mobil1 Rebate

2015-03-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just a heads up to all who use Mobil1:

If you do the rebate online you can only claim it ($12) for one five quart jug.
If you do the mail-in form you can do it for two.

Just scored a couple of five quart jugs of 15W-50 at my local WalMart, who
usually never has the stuff. $57.10 for two just, with a $24.00 rebate coming
makes it pretty darned cheap.

[MBZ] OMG!! We almost died!

2015-03-07 Thread clay via Mercedes
Months ago, #1 boy and I installed new rotors on his w140. We had already done
the pads long before. About three weeks ago, the driver side front wheel
began groaning when he would shift from reverse to drive. Around the same time
the boy had been doing 50 work weeks on the 0400-1400 shift. He was too brain
dead to be inquisitive about the cause.

Today, we attended a tech session at a local indy shop. I had him drive me in
the w140 on the chance he would be willing to toss it up on the lift. As he
was parking the car, one of the local officers got all excited that the lower
control arm had failed, based on the giant movement of the wheel in the well.
That gave him impetus to have it looked at. All the others who had seen the
floppy wheel were going on about how brave we were to have tried to drive it.
That we would be needing a ride back home, as it was in no way safe to drive.

On the ramp, the car was not doing what everybody thought it should be if the
LCA were failing. The upper ball joint is not that great on either side, but
will work for now. The wiggly wheel was due to the lower caliper bolt having
exited the vehicle, probably very early one dark morning. We had torqued all
the bolts, but this one needed to either have gone back on the ramps a few
times to get them retorqued, or had a dab of lock tite used. Shop had a spare
bolt and a dab of goo, so the wheel was no longer going to make us dead.

While on the lift, it was found that the shift bushings had escaped as well.
Shop owner, who was poking around the underside pulled the lever and popped a
new bushing on. Now the gears engage easier. He also confirmed that the wire
harness is garbage and to deal with the leaking head gasket, we will want to
find a new one and put it on. That should also deal with the blinking lights
on the dash.

While looking at the 600 SC that was hemorrhaging M1 and ATF, I walked head
first into the bent 22 rim and rubber band tire. Ended up flat on my butt
sitting in a puddle of ATF. Now my neck hurts.

At least the complimentary beer, ribs, beans, and 'tater salad the owner cooked
up were tasty.

2015-03-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Glad you caught this, but I'm confused.

I don't understand how a missing caliper bolt would make the wheel wiggle.
There's no relationship between the caliper and the wheel as far as the wheel's
position.

Please elaborate.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Parental Control Hardware

2015-03-07 Thread clay via Mercedes
These solutions end up being a complete mess a bunch of the time. Kids are
much smarter than humans and will find a way to bypass your lock downs. They
hack it or find some other way to get what they want. Then the adults will
want to access sites that are not appropriate according to the nanny ware.
So you get lots of requests for exceptions or ranting about how stupid this
whole interweb thing is.

The most solid way to lock it down is hardware/firewall. You have to
explicitly delineate the only accepted sites that can be visited. Then you
will need to lock the hardware in an unaccessible closet, so critters can not
get at it to fiddle with it.

Re: [MBZ] OMG!! We almost died!

I was not witness to the wheel wiggle visual. A person could tell that
something was not right and that there was movement of a sort at the wheel
point from inside the car. It felt to me that the caliper had come loose, or
that a bushing was allowing excess movement when changing direction from
reverse to forward motion, or when braking in reverse. While the whole circus
was going on, I was drooling over the three W113 that were waiting to go up on
the lift. Much consternation and looks of horror were had, which got my
attention, so I went to find out what the excitement was. Witnesses were
describing immanent catastrophe, so I took them at their word.

Glad you caught this, but I'm confused.

I don't understand how a missing caliper bolt would make the wheel wiggle.
There's no relationship between the caliper and the wheel as far as the
 wheel's position.

 Please elaborate.

Months ago, #1 boy and I installed new rotors on his w140. We had already
done the pads long before. About three weeks ago, the driver side front
wheel began groaning when he would shift from reverse to drive. Around the
same time the boy had been doing 50 work weeks on the 0400-1400 shift. He
was too brain dead to be inquisitive about the cause.

Today, we attended a tech session at a local indy shop. I had him drive me
in the w140 on the chance he would be willing to toss it up on the lift. As
he was parking the car, one of the local officers got all excited that the
lower control arm had failed, based on the giant movement of the wheel in
the well. That gave him impetus to have it looked at. All the others who
had seen the floppy wheel were going on about how brave we were to have
tried to drive it. That we would be needing a ride back home, as it was in
 no way safe to drive.

On the ramp, the car was not doing what everybody thought it should be if
the LCA were failing. The upper ball joint is not that great on either
side, but will work for now. The wiggly wheel was due to the lower caliper
bolt having exited the vehicle, probably very early one dark morning. We
had torqued all the bolts, but this one needed to either have gone back on
the ramps a few times to get them retorqued, or had a dab of lock tite used.
Shop had a spare bolt and a dab of goo, so the wheel was no longer going to
 make us dead.

While on the lift, it was found that the shift bushings had escaped as well.
Shop owner, who was poking around the underside pulled the lever and popped
a new bushing on. Now the gears engage easier. He also confirmed that the
wire harness is garbage and to deal with the leaking head gasket, we will
want to find a new one and put it on. That should also deal with the
 blinking lights on the dash.

While looking at the 600 SC that was hemorrhaging M1 and ATF, I walked head
first into the bent 22 rim and rubber band tire. Ended up flat on my butt
sitting in a puddle of ATF. Now my neck hurts.

At least the complimentary beer, ribs, beans, and 'tater salad the owner
 cooked up were tasty.

[MBZ] OT - RAISING COTTON

2015-03-07 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Yep, another one already:

RAISING COTTON
By Wilton Strickland

Cotton is another crop we raised that was very labor-intensive but not
nearly so much as tobacco. Spring preparation of the soil was done very
much the same as for tobacco -- walking behind a mule or a pair of mules --
breaking up or turning the soil, running rows, putting fertilizer in the
rows, etc., but, 'instead of transplanting small plants from a plant bed
into the rows the way tobacco was done, cotton seeds were placed directly in
the rows using a mule-drawn, walk-behind planter. The planter had a hopper
to hold a significant amount of seeds, which the machine deposited in the
soil and covered lightly with soil. The farmer also plowed the crop several
times during the growing season to remove weeds and grass in addition to the
usual weeding with hand-held hoes done by all members of the family,
including little children.
In addition to constant concern about the weather, insects were also a
major concern with cotton, especially boll weevils, such as those that
nearly ruined our cotton crop in 1940. (This insect would bore into and
infest the boll, the part of the plant containing the valuable fibers.)
Daddy and my brothers, Lewis, Carson and W. B., mixed arsenic with molasses
and mopped it with rags attached to the ends of sticks onto the plants in an
effort to kill the insects. The boys got very sick - likely from arsenic
poisoning; 'don't know what it did to the insects.
In autumn, all members of the family went into the fields to pick
cotton by hand. By this time, cotton was dry and fluffy in the bolls, which
spread open to expose the white fibers. We grasped the cotton with our
fingers to pull it from the boll and placed it in a burlap bag that we
dragged along on the ground behind us. Adults had to bend at the waist and
hips to get down to the cotton. Some even crawled along on their knees.
Each quarter section of every boll had very sharp needle-like points
protruding from the outer ends of them. These points could easily stick
into our fingers, especially under the cuticles, causing bloody and very
sore fingers by the end of the day.
At dusk each picker's cotton was weighed on a cotton scale in the
field -- a balance-beam-type tool using known iron weights called pees.
Hired workers were paid for their labor by the amount of cotton picked --
maybe three or four dollars for a day; members of the family were
congratulated for a job well done and got to sit at the table and eat supper
with the rest of the family that night, as usual.
After enough cotton to fill a truck or a wagon with tall sides had been
picked, the farmer would take it to a gin to have the seeds removed and have
the cotton compacted into a bale usually weighing about 500 pounds. After
all of the cotton was removed from the field, the farmer used the riding
mule-drawn stalk cutter to cut the stalks and begin to prepare the field for
the next year's crop.
