Federal employees do pay from their paychecks for retirement annuity (FERS), can contribute to the 401k equivalent (TSP) which has matching up to 5%, and pay social insecurity, medicare, etc. etc. Congress critters have been able to exempt themselves from some laws (like insider trading) and still automatically pay themselves a nice fat pay raise each year, but they have the same retirement plan, same healthcare options, and pay the same taxes on their federal pay like all other federal employees. M189 (W109 1965-67) and the M198 (gullwing) share several parts and designs. I can confirm, at least, the water pump is the same part, for example. I never bothered to compare much else in the EPC. but if you examine both closely you can see many shared deigns. Jaime On Wed, May 27, 2015 at 12:53 PM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: There is no relationship between a W109 and the Gullwing other than they used a mechanical injection pump for fuel delivery, I don't think even the pump is the same. The Gullwing engine wasn't used all that much, it was very expensive to manufacture, and difficult to maintain (the injection nozzles were in the block, aimed at the spark plugs) and Benz added the fuel injection to more normal engines intended for road use, not a sliced down aircraft engine. Not that the original engine wasn't a marvel, it was just not a great production engine. No suspension parts, either, to the best of my knowledge. I believe, although I could easily be wrong, that the SL had a fully independent rear end (I will see my buddy Hans tomorrow, I can ask, he worked on them) rather than a swing axle. Front end on the SL I don't know about. The W109 had kingpins and a two control arms, but so did everything Benz made at that time, at least until the W115 replaced the kingpin with ball joints. Geometry was improved in 1962 to change the kingpin axis and reduce scrub while increasing caster, some minor changes in the W115 on those lines as well. Nothing exciting except in comparison to US road iron of the day, all of which drove like log wagons. The SL had a space frame, with body panels attached, and working on it was pure hell -- a good deal of the rear frame had to be removed to get to the rear axle. Every Benz designed after 1950 has a unibody. I don't see all that much Gullwing in the W108/9 -- it was an old design by 1968, dating from the 1950s. Nice cars, but I like the W126 MUCH more. I made up some stingers from schedule 40 PVC 3/4 inch pipe to stick down the barrel and stick into the Ranch Tank. I use clear poly tubing from Ace hardware from those to the pump, [lets me see if fuel is flowing] and alligator clamps and landscaping low voltage wire to run from the truck battery to the pump, with a 12V on/off switch at the pump.. Takes about 15 to 20 minutes to pump off 55 gallons, but it's a poor mans way to haul fuel, and have control over cost of tanks.. I picked up the 55 gal barrels used once [had engine oil original use] for $5 each. HTH.. Grant... Naaa. Kaleb's a rich rancher with an image to maintain. Plus other jobs I'm sure hoping so. Six months ago I bought and installed a new clutch master cylinder in a early '81 240D. The website didn't post the manufacturer - so I took a chance, and lost. It was a TRW with Lucas cast into the body - not a FTE or FAG. A couple months ago the car started losing brake fluid. It took awhile for it to get big enough for me to find it. The leak was the main seal on the clutch master cylinder. Fluid was leaking out and spilling over the top every time the pedal was pressed. *sigh* This is the TRW that is less than 6 months old, the one that didn't fit right. I had to grind about 3 mm off the end of the short rod to make it work. I order a FTE master cylinder from AutohauseAZ and a short rod. I was quite surprised to find the master cylinder had both a short and a long rod! No mention was made in the description. So I wasted $6 and have an extra short rod. Oh well. For what it's worth, it seem the short rods typically have a white plastic end and the long rods have a black plastic end. So how did it install? Perfect. Bolted in like it should, I was able to bleed it from the slave up (so the rod wasn't too long). And I had the assistance of a six-year-old who was able to lay down on the floorboard and reach up under the dash! So I'm hoping that the last time I have to mess with that master cylinder for at least a dozen years. Next was the starter motor. The one in the car was requiring a tap on the solenoid every time the car was cranked. I put in a used one - that often would just spin and not crank the engine. So I took apart 3 starters and picked the best parts from each and put together a whole one that's working fine. Some days it's worth that kind of effort to safe $150 dollars. The last item was the power steering return hose. It was rubbing against an air conditioner hose and nearly worn through. I found it odd the A/C hose shows almost no wear, while the PS hose was very worn. A new piece of Continental hose and that was fixed. I also drained and flush the fluid and put in a new filter. The old filter was one I haven't seen before. Three pieces, a steel bottom plate with ears to hold the element, a steel top plate, and the filter element NOT paper. It looks like it may be reusable. I cleaned it up and put it in the spare parts box and put a new Mann in the pump. Now I just need to get a MIG welder and repair some sheet metal... -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] 124 sunroof rear drains
They exist. I checked the EPC and the diagram for the sunroof frame shows the tube at the rear corners. Last night I dug in, was able to see the attached tube at the pan (slightly rusty, but not rusted through) and found the far end where it exited the body under the rear bumper, just behind the rear wheel. Right rear drain did indeed have some debris which came out when I ran an old speedometer cable through it and poured water from above. Peach Parts post with pictures: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/368659-124-wagon-sunroof-drains.html End result: After cleaning and buttoning all back up, watered the roof for 10 minutes with garden hose, and now water made it into the car. Lesson learned: if you use your sunroof, make cleaning front and rear drains part of your maintenance routine. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT iPhone forced reset via text message
You forgot where the iPhone fan-bois will wait in line all night to buy a new phone that just nearly catches Apple up to the features of the last generation Samsung phone. Or where they implant the souls of murdered Chinese workers into the phones to finally make Siri work. They'll be successful but you'll have to speak Chinese to it. -Curt From: Meade Dillon via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Meade Dillon dillonm...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 1:04 PM Subject: [MBZ] OT iPhone forced reset via text message Just read an article about the most recent bug in iPhone IOS, which is triggered by a text message containing both arabic and english text. I suspect being dipped is more common in farm country. I've never even HEARD of anybody getting dipped. We get non-taxable diesel delivered for the snowmobile trail groomers at a substantial discount over taxed diesel. Re: [MBZ] Pumping diesel
I've found that my Jetta is very sensitive to fuel. The cheapest station around gives me around a 3mpg loss of mileage while the most expensive gives about a 1mpg gain over the mid range stations which are all about the same.Based on the most expensive station being usually around $0.20 more expensive I generally avoid it unless we're going on a long trip and I want a long distance tank. I also avoid the cheapest station unless I absolutely have to stop there. -Curt From: Meade Dillon via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Meade Dillon dillonm...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Pumping diesel I have found that calculating the cost per mile at each station is the best way to determine which station to use. I keep a log for each diesel car. The parties have managed to work together in the past but seem unable or unwilling to do so now. Being obstinate is just not good for the country.
