Just did a search on MBE 900 engine specs and they say, 250 HP, with no
provision to "turn them up" since it's the "small engine" of the series.

Further search of MBE 900 engines for sale show listings from $8,000+ for a
running takeout [no mileage shown] to $800 for a rebuild able core. [you
have to remove the engine, pack it.. ship it.. at that price] .. hardly
seems worth the effort.

[MBZ] OT - Ink cartridges FS

2015-09-13 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
About a month ago, my HP ink jet printer went "belly up." 'Purchased new
printer that uses different ink cartridges, so I'm left with a combination
package containing TWO HP56 (black) and one HP57 (color) cartridges - $92 value
($108 separately). I also have one HP56 (black) Staples re-filled cartridge;
value ~$25. Packages are unopened and in the exact same condition as purchased
off the rack at Staples. See photo.

Somebody send me a check for $60, and I'll send them to you via USPS mucho
pronto. I'll even include the two cartridges (#56 and #57) now in the printer
and partially used with likely significant amount of ink remaining.

Not sure an early ML with 300k on the clock is going to be a decent ride...or
not decent enough
to be worth multiple thousands of dollars.
If it was $1000 with the transmission locked in 2nd gear and 150-200k on the odo
I'd be all over it now that I have DAS.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Turbines for power and heat [was Re: The demise pf Pruis h*ters]

2015-09-13 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Craig,

There were two auxiliary propulsion units (APUs) mounted about 1/3 of the
ship's length from the bow. They were electric and could be retracted when not
in use, and rotated 360 degrees. A skilled ship driver could use those and the
main engine to maneuver pier-side or get underway with no tug boat if the
opposing wind and tide were low (less than 15 knots wind or one knot of tide).

However, using the APUs to counteract the stern walk was a losing battle. We
found it was better to use momentum and good judgement to "coast" the ship up
to the pier and get just close enough to get lines over, and then use the lines
to pull the ship in the last few yards.

One could balance the APUs against the stern walk and twist the ship if needed,
but that was usually a slow dance, very trying for Sailors waiting to get off
the ship after a period at sea. Far more efficient to come at the pier with a
few knots speed (below three knots of forward speed the rudder became
ineffective), and then kick the rudder to get the stern going the right way,
and apply reverse thrust with propeller and APUs at just the right time.
