Gerry wrote:
Could this have anything to do with your HD troubles:?

"XCodeGhost iOS infection toll rises from 39 to a WHOPPING 4,000 apps
Initial analysis way off, researchers find"

The number of XCodeGhost-infected iOS apps, initially pegged at 39, has
ballooned to more than 4,000.

The staggering increase was the handiwork of analysis by FireEye researchers
who said that the apps were being hosted on the official Apple App Store.

"Immediately after learning of XcodeGhost, FireEye Labs identified more than
4,000 infected apps on the App Store," FireEye said.

The malicious apps steal device and user information and send stolen data
to a command and control (CnC) server [and] also accept remote commands
including the ability to open URLs sent by the CnC server.

These URLs can be phishing webpages for stealing credentials, or a link to
an enterprise-signed malicious app that can be installed on non-jailbroken
devices.

A FireEye spokesman told Vulture South that many of the infected apps were
owned by "big Chinese global brands" such as consumer electronics, telcos, and
banks.

The Register has asked FireEye for the names of some of the prominent affected
apps and will update this story should the information come to hand.

FireEye put the huge increase in the number of discovered apps to fast scanning
by its mobile threat prevention platform.

Apple has continued to exorcise the App Store of malicious apps uploaded in
what has been widely considered to be Cupertino's first big malware attack.

The apps were infected after developers downloaded a copy of the Xcode iOS
development tool through a file-sharing service. That package was modified to
trojanise apps in a way that passed App Store security checks, and was
advertised on popular developer forums as a faster source to download the 3Gb
Xcode file.

The success of the XCodeGhost phish is staggering; that some 4,000 apps were
hosed indicates that a lot of developers were sucked into what must have been a
very well-executed attack by highly capable malefactors.

Veracode principal solutions architect John Smith said that the attack
challenged the notion that iOS was safer than Android.

"In recent years it has seemed that the problem of mobile malware was bigger
for Android than for iOS," Smith said.

"The more rigorous testing regime required before an iOS app can be published
has always been considered to be the reason for this difference, but in this
case it seems to have fallen short." ®

Follow-up: repair still a success.

More background: for several years the alternator light in the instrument panel
would glow faintly, visible only at night. I attempted to repair by cleaning
the harness plug contacts, replacing the voltage regulator and by complete
disassembly / cleaning / testing the alternator. The symptoms were there for a

[MBZ] testing my mercedes 300td AC

2015-09-24 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i've been out testing the 82 300TD AC and car.

I replaced the r4 compressor again about 2 weeks ago.

Last week i dragged a 1500 lb printing press to Tupelo, MS from athens, ga
relatively uneventfully. As i left there i had no vacuum or boost on the
brakes. Fortunately, the trailer was unladen on the return trip. Back in
athens, i was preparing to change the vacuum pump but got the idea to blow out
the check valve of the pump. I had already flushed it with some solvent. I blew
it out with the air hose last week and i've had good boost ever since.

So, Tuesday afternoon, i went out for another test. I drove 600 miles to
indianapolis, in. There i picked up a 1000 lb press and probably 500 lbs of
lead type.

I turned around and left indy about 5 pm wednesday and made it back to athens
about 4 am.

I stopped at the i-75 georgia welcome center about 1 am and made some coffee.
When i started back up the starter made a weak GRRR sound and barely turned the
hot engine over … which fortunately started instantly. I decided, wisely, that
i shouldn't shut it down.

I had some much crap in the car that i couldn't have much hope of finding the
meter, so i never checked for charge.

As i was on the home stretch about 10 miles out, i noticed that the lights
dimmed slightly when i put the AC blower on high fan.

When i got home, the starter wouldn't turn the engine over.

i am charging the battery now to start it and check the charging.

The alternator belts are tight and i guess i should check the rear wires to the
alternator.

So, AC test successful …. alternator test, less successful.

I drove about 2000 miles in the last 8 or 9 days …. 1000 miles dragging 1500
lbs … ac works

brake vacuum still good and maybe i'm not charging.

Had i realized that i wasn't charging, i'd have unplugged one headlight to
diminish the load on the battery

Not doing anything special i seem to have had 3+ hours of running with radio
and AC and lights, etc …. which is pretty good.

thanks,

xx rick

2015-09-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Take the footwell cover off. Start the car. Turn the blower switch on. Take
a screwdriver handle and push upward on the spindle of the rotor, which is
exposed; you may need to take an additional cover off to expose it. If the
fan starts when you push upward, get a new motor. The brushes wear a groove
in the copper on the rotor over time and moving it axially reestablishes
contact. New brushes may also help.

Re: [MBZ] testing my mercedes 300td AC

2015-09-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Way-to-go on the AC compressor, sounds like you've got that buttoned down.

I checked the alternator harness connector by hooking up my meter with some
long test leads so I could lay under the car and see the meter. Front end
up on ramps and on a 124 there is easy access to the alternator and
harness, don't know about a 123.193. I started the engine and watched the
meter, and it immediately jumped from ~12.5 volts up to ~13.6 when I
touched the harness, and simultaneously there was a click from the
alternator and the engine slowed down slightly as it picked up the
electrical load on the alternator.

You could also tap on the alternator to see if the brushes need coaxing to
make contact, and then maybe all you need is a new regulator assembly (has
new brushes).

I had a long-term oil leak from the front crank seal that had coated the
engine front including the alternator with oil, so I took the alternator
entirely apart a couple years ago and cleaned all that up, especially
focusing on the internal contacts from rectifier bridge to alternator body
and the same for the voltage regulator.

Don't forget that you can get the alternator tested for free at FLAPS, the
O-Reilly's in town here has the best test equipment and people who are
actually trained in using it.

A dose of RedLine and an oil change quieted my TDI down quite a bit,
and smoothed it out, too. I don't know why better oil would make the
engine run that much smoother, but I noticed within a dozen miles or so.

I use Mobil 1 T, it's readily available and most of the "rated" oils
are not.

I think you will find professional installers routinely using liquid
sealants even on 123 windshield gaskets these days. They will put a small
bead at the bottoms of the grooves for the frame and the glass to ensure a
tight seal on both surfaces. I have had it done a few times now and that is
always the drill. It stops leaks developing over time, which we all know is
one of the big causes of floors rusting out of older MBs. Without liquid
gasket, the rubber gets hardened by ozone over decades and begins to leak.

The groove on my 123 blower was so deep, turning it down didn't leave enough
copper to make it usable. That may be true of nearly all blowers that work
intermittently. Better to get a new, or good used, blower IMO. Had the same
experience on the old 6 volt Chevrolet generators.

[MBZ] OT: VW Golf TDI brakes

2015-09-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My car is too old ('05) to be in the cheating period...
One of the rear brakes has been sticking a little and as we'd like to take that
car to Syracuse this weekend (way cheaper than taking the pickup) I figured it
was time to look at it.
The car has 4 wheel disks, the rears have the parking brakes which are actuated
by levers on the inside of the caliper. The driver's side lever was stuck about
halfway on. I tapped it with a hammer and moved it back to the stop. That
helped but it still made a noise so I jacked up the car and took the wheel off.
Had to dig awhile to find the security lock for the one special lug, it was in
the glove box for some reason...Anyway I got the wheel off and pulled the
caliper, shot some Kroil on the pivot for the park brake and worked it back and
forth a bunch until it would spring back to the stop when I released it. I put
the caliper back on the rotor and gently pried back and forth to open the
caliper a little. Also tried opening the bleeder valve to see if maybe a
collapsing hose was the culprit. The brake fluid looked good and I saw no sign
of a collapsing hose so I buttoned it all back up. With the wheel back on the
noise is gone, I put the hammer in the back of the car as insurance...
While I was out I took a minute to check tire pressure, interestingly this car
has a slow leak on the left front while the Jetta has a slow leak at the right
front. This car leaks slower though. I wrangled the left front mudflap back
into position, it'd fallen off its clip due to damage to the fender which I
want to replace. Finally I put a can of Diesel Purge into the 1/4 tank of fuel,
I know it'd be better if I ran it directly but I don't have time and I've had
decent luck with this technique.Took the car for a spin to pick up a quart of
VW 505.01 oil (Valvoline Syn-Power 5w40) apparently many of the TDI folks run
M1 Turbo Diesel truck which doesn't meet the standard only because Mobil hasn't
applied for it. I dunno I may switch over to it at the next change. The engine
did sound quieter on the return trip with the Diesel Purge running through it,
could be wishful thinking, its pretty quiet car already.

Re: [MBZ] Sl320

2015-09-24 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Oughta be worth somewhere around $2500 if it is that good of shape.
Less in Okieland, more in Jamieland. If you have a pro level photog,
it might bring $5000 on fleabay.

Wish I could buy it for $700 delivered! Too bad it has loop glow
plugs. an 81 would have pencil glow plugs and be more valuable to
me. My 80 240D has a newer engine and i managed with help from Max
to hack the wiring harness to use the 81+ glow relay ($150) versus
the 80- relay ($500)

Slight thread jump.. please excuse me..

Just up on a local auction service I subscribe to :
1980, 240D, Arizona car.. zero rust. No body damage, good original paint.
178,000 miles
Runs/drives
Yellow
Light tan interior.. quite nice looking.
Decent tires
Has air "blows cold" [wink wink , don't they all?]

Current bid is $658.00 ...

Looks like a solid driver that has had decent care.. Does this car have
value? If so, what value? What is the market on a 1980, 240D?

No, I don't need another car.. could it be flipped for a profit?

Thanks, Grant...
