Re: [MBZ] Where Old Republicans Go to Die

2016-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
As Curly just stated, the M103 is no dog, it's a very peppy engine that will
definitely get up on its hind legs when you put your foot into it. That being
said, I've never driven a W126 with an M103 in it, but considering the
additional weight a W126 has over a W124, I would expect some drop in
performance.

Again, a W126 is not a car you're going to be taking to the track on the
weekends, so that doesn't matter to me.

handling was nothing special. He kept it for years and finally sold

Metadata? If I am watching who goes in to the voting booth and when (all

timing to derive most of the votes. This would be handy if I were a
community organizer of some kind, especially if people knew I might have
this data and were members of some fraternal organization I happened to
head. Short of collecting receipts this would be an effective way to cow
your members into voting the party line.

If the vote record doesn't have timing then the statistics are taking away
one vote per person - effectively mandating that all people have to vote
based on whatever demographics are selected, otherwise the statistician is
going to declare the votes were invalid. (If you have a very successful
ground campaign in one area but not another, you end up looking like a
cheat - if this includes the force of law, then you may as well let SAS
choose the president in advance.)

I agree that counting votes is important, but the paper system is easy to
game already - ask Khrushchev, or the NC BoE. Just because something else
is also easy to game doesn't make it inherently worse.

That said, NC is literally the poster child for where individual votes
don't matter due to the statistically gerrymandered districts, so I may

My assessment exactly, with a few add ons.

Gull wing doors with non functioning side windows from a practical standpoint.
Stainless body not repairable by an ordinary body shop, except by
replacement. [very high cost due to limited production]
Nothing outstanding in either power or preformance.
Not really an attractive car that says "drive me, I'm Aston Martin fast".
Virtually impossible to access engine for routine maintenance.
High cost [for it's era].
You have to take off your disco boots to drive it... [snarky comment].

I wish the "new production" every success, however, I won't be
spending $40+K for a refurbished one.. or $100+K for a new one...
ever..

It should also be trivial to sanitize the data of PII (personally
identifiable information) and replace that with some unique identifier so
the mathematician can do her thing.

Outright refusal to cooperate and allow data to be examined is the same
tactic used by the global warming scare-monger crowd. "Trust us!" Not on

I have never found a 126 to be a boring car, with lots of hours of butt
 time in the 126.

IMHO, it is the finest MB produced after the 600. But the 600 is in a
class of its own, and outside the specialty cars such as the 600 and the
300SL, the 126 is THE finest postwar MB.

The 126 is a uniquely competent car, being quite reliable, safe, and
roadworthy over 30 years or more.

It is also a beautiful car

Re: [MBZ] Where Old Republicans Go to Die

2016-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would agree with that aspect of it, but Curly’s points regarding the W126
body style override the boring consideration of the M103 engine. And if you
want a W126 gasser, there’s nothing simpler than this car. If you go with the
V8 powered models, they’re more complex and definitely more expensive to
maintain.

Kaleb will chime in about them being dogs, but the W126 is not a car you should
be worrying about speed contests in.

Dan who has a W126 300SEL on his bucket list

Anyone looking for a nice MacBook Air?

Got a buddy selling an 11", 2014, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM, still has a year left on
AppleCare. I think he's looking for around $580, which is a very good price.

I would buy it if I had a need, but I don't right now.

special contract with the DMC Company. These PRV engines

"The original Ducellier alternator

From the Museum facilbuch page: the 123 turns 40 today!or their car due to the
great demand. This was the reason
why its predecessor, the W 114/115
"Stroke Eight", was still produced
at the same time until December
1976. The W 123 series is also
one of the most successful E-Class
generations in numbers: around 2.7
million vehicles were built,
almost 2.4 million of which are
saloon cars and a good 200.000 T

That sentence is confusing because "Rich and I" are not the subjects as they

subject of the sentence is the (understood): (It) is time for me...).

I series.

You want an I series for longevity and compatibility.

For cheap and dirty basic computing with no expectation of future support, I
recommend a C2D.

I would never suggest a C2D to someone unless they had those sorts of
expectations. This would be for someone who is in the weeds as far as budget
or computing needs.

You'll be quite pleased with your I5, it will be supported for a long time, and
just about anything you want to run on it will do so.

Any tears for the 1975 - 89 Chevy Chevette?

I purchased one new in late 1975 for $3600, and sold it in 1982 for $300
prior to purchasing my very first Mercedes - a 1973 280. As they say, the
rest is (boring) history.

Time Magazine rated it among the 50 most cars!

On Wheeler Dealers they purchased a 1976 AMC Pacer for $3500 and
then tricked it out for another $15K, IIRC. They ended up 8K in the hole
after donating it to a charity auction...

[MBZ] Wildly OT: Disney's Animal Kingdom park sued for snake bite!

2016-01-29 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
WILDLIFE:Boy's Disney snake bite caused grandmother's death --
lawsuitPublished:
Friday, January 29, 2016

A family is suing Disney's Animal Kingdom on the grounds that a snake bite
to their 8-year-old son caused the cardiac arrest and death of the boy's
grandmother.

The incident took place in October 2014 at the Florida theme park, attorney
Matt Morgan said. The family said the snake escaped and entered a public
area, then fell from a tree and bit the boy.

Disney confirmed the snake bite incident but said it was a wild,
nonvenomous snake and not part of the park's collection. It said the boy
was treated with a Band-Aid, and the family went on to enjoy their day.

But the family said the boy's grandmother went into cardiac arrest after
witnessing the incident and died soon afterward.

"These allegations are an utter mischaracterization of the facts," a park
representative said (Daniel Dahm, WKMG
,
Jan. 28). *-- BTP*

Any tears for the 1975 - 89 Chevy Chevette?

I purchased one new in late 1975 for $3600, and sold it in 1982 for $300
prior to purchasing my very first Mercedes - a 1973 280. As they say, the
rest is (boring) history.

Time Magazine rated it among the 50 most cars!

http://content.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1658545_1658533_1658523,00.html

A shove-it?

What do you think it was that changed the name of that GM division to
Shove-roll-lay? Oh, and the car first became a Shove-it for obvious
reasons.

ANC is a depressing place, I think. I liked Fairbanks better.

Be sure to visit the Great Alaskan Bush Company while you're there!

I found it quite utilitarian, and problem free for 6 years (except for
surprisingly costly brake work). With the maintenance savings I was able
to Move Up to a (used) Mercedes.

Does that apply to all cars, or just MBZ?
You can have my 2007 Saturn Ion 5sp for $1500 when I'm done with it in April,
but the A/C doesn't work.

190kmi, new tires last summer. Need to replace either the radiator fan or the
fan controller box to make the CEL go out, which might also activate the A/C,
the kid who sold it to me said it held charge.

2016-01-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Pretty much anything. I bought my '83 240D in 2003 for $1500, '78 240D in
(IIRC) 2010 for same. Neither needed anything (I did have to get a face plate
for the radio in the '83) for the first few months of ownership.'98 Jetta
needed a little work but nothing exciting.'05 Golf needed a transmission and a
fender but is now much beyond a $1500 car.

Back years ago wasn't there some sort of Renault that got imported and
co-badged with Dodge or something? anyway, this girl who was a friend
of my wife was getting married in NJ or someplace, and another friend
and her husband wanted to go. They had a new Renault or whatever it was
and offered to take it. OK. At some point I got pressed into driving,
what a POS that thing was. Small, no power, handled like a beach ball,
since there were 4 of us and luggage it was down on the suspension stops
so rode like a log wagon.
