I consider them to be interchangeable. I've never taken one apart.
In a pinch, I will use a WIX, but they don't look as good as the
german filters.

Roger's STP filter may be a reboxed Mahle, since Mahle makes things
in the US of A now. The 'merkun filters for MBs have always been
inferior.

Does anyone have the part number (or metric size) for the little
orings that go on the center shaft of the oil filter cap on OM61x
and OM 60x engines?2 per oil filter housing.

The less expensive oil comes to $0.01 per mile driven, instead of $0.24 with
M1.  That is around $30 between not M1 and Mobil 1 for a change if I never
drove the SL at all.  On a higher mileage basis, I would probably be even,
doing two low cost oil changes to one M1 fill.

Re: [MBZ] One Simple Question...It's not an Oil Thread

2016-02-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
As some other folks have said, in an older car its probably fine. If I had a
61x engine I'd probably be running conventional oil and a block heater. The
soot load of the older engines is really the limiting factor for longer oil
changes.
61x and later engines really ought to have synthetic. Easier cold starts = less
startup wear, longer oil change durations = same cost to operate. Both my 190Ds
were well within safe limits at 10,000 mile oil changes and I suspect they
could have easily gone to 15,000.
Hilariously VW recommends 10,000 mile oil changes in the US but 30,000 miles
outside of the US. They do that because they recognize that nearly zero US car
owners will ever read the owners manual...
My VW guy was telling me he was talking to a VW mechanic in Germany who says
the almost never have cam failures on the BEW engines over there while its a
common problem here. Internet lore suggests the cam failures here are from the
dealers putting in the wrong oil...

Delo has always been a very good conventional oil. I use

I didn't properly appreciate how good a public school I went to until I got
into college and realized I was at least year ahead of my peers. None of my
liberal arts classes challenged me. The video production classes kicked my ass
so its good I had high marks from the liberal arts classes to balance things
out. My production classes also kept me humble.
I skipped English 100 since I'd gotten a perfect score on the TSWE (Test of
Standard Written English) which apparently very few of my peers had even taken.
After attending a few classes of English 110 I suggested to the teacher that I
only show up for tests since I was the only one in the class doing the reading
and the other students were suffering since I knew basically everything the
teacher was going to say. We ended up making a deal where I would sit and read
in my dorm during those class sessions and he just gave me the A. My taking the
test was putting the curve so badly out that nobody else could pass...

My kids went to the worst grade school and middle school in town, the high
schools were equal - and did really well in college - two went to Yale,
another to NYU, two were in the "scholars" program at OU, they have five
masters degrees between the four of them (one doesn't have a masters), etc.
It's the student and their family support, NOT the school.

Exactly.

There was a burned out Porch 356 or 911, I don’t recall which, on BAT a few
weeks ago. Even had the certificate of authenticity or whatever they have from
Porch. The car was literally a burned out shell. I don’t know what it sold
for, but it sold.

[MBZ] Broken Spring?

2016-02-10 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have been driving our '82 240D/3.0 with the broken left-rear lower
shock mount. I noticed recently some other noises and that the left-rear
wheel is at quite an angle (see picture attached).

Do I have a broken spring?

If I do, how difficult will it be to get a replacement? I recall all
sorts of things about springs with different paint markings, different
shim thicknesses, and so forth, complicating the issue.

Thanks,

This is the stuff I use, but there are others. I would just shy away from the
fancy name brands, like Rain-X, because you’re just paying for the brand name
and the end results are the same:

I would have to check, but I think a can is between $3-$4. It lasts a while, I
usually buy one every couple of months. It would probably be longer, but my
youngest is obsessively clean when it comes to automotive glass. I think he
cleans his windshield like a preflight check every time he drives the car.

I realized many years ago that my lower, middle (we didn't call 'em that
then) and high schools weren't so great, either, but in about 6th grade I
decided that I'd get a good education there, anyway. I didn't leave it to
the school; I did it myself for myself. I wish every child, every teenager,
could have at least a little bit of the intense desire for an education that
I had. If they did, we'd need a lot more schools and a lot less jails.

I didn't properly appreciate how good a public school I went to until I got
into college and realized I was at least year ahead of my peers. None of my
liberal arts classes challenged me. The video production classes kicked my
ass so its good I had high marks from the liberal arts classes to balance
things out. My production classes also kept me humble.
I skipped English 100 since I'd gotten a perfect score on the TSWE (Test
of Standard Written English) which apparently very few of my peers had
even taken. After attending a few classes of English 110 I suggested to
the teacher that I only show up for tests since I was the only one in the
class doing the reading and the other students were suffering since I knew
basically everything the teacher was going to say. We ended up making a
deal where I would sit and read in my dorm during those class sessions and
he just gave me the A. My taking the test was putting the curve so badly
out that nobody else could pass...

Re: [MBZ] Broken Spring?

2016-02-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I suspect that your lower control arm is collapsing. Recommend a flat-bed
tow to a garage that can replace it for proper diagnoses on a lift. Used
arms which are rust free are the best value.

"While you are there": If you've got the time and funding to have them drop
the entire rear axle carrier / saddle assembly, they can replace all the
rubber bushings on both rear control arms. New rubber shims, maybe new
springs and new shocks and good for another 100k miles or more...

They appear to be some kind of foam. I tried 3/4" heater hose. That
worked on some older cars. It fits on the evap drain but won't go

Maybe the original has a formed coupling on the evap end like some heater

But the ammonia will melt/etch the surface of many plastics.
So be careful not to get it on the vinyl dash. Or seats.
And _don't_ use it on the instrument cluster "glass"! Or on

If its a V8 engine, it's most likely Detroit Diesel 8V92 [which is what
mine has]
8= Number of cylinders, V= Configuration, 92= Cubic inches displacement per
cylinder.. 450 Horse Power.

The inline 6 cylinder Cummins engine option was offered in 1989 because
Cummins engine met the more harsh EPA rules that became effective in 89.
Detroit V 8 did not.

Mine went from a 52 seat coach to a 2 passenger luxury apartment on wheels,
so I guess you could call it a "party bus" .. ;))

Same coach used all over europe with Mercedes engine and trans.. to make
import rules.. they were assembled and sold in USA with "Made in USA"
engines and transmissions [Allison 742, for anyone interested] same
transmission used in trash trucks... very bullet proof.

Engine oil change = 9 gallons of oil, 3 filters
Transmission oil change = 38 gts of oil, 2 filters
Fuel tanks = Two tanks .. 248 gallons #2 diesel on board...
3 axles, 8 tires @ $600.00 each = $4800.00 plus mount and balance.
Total operation cost per mile.. = If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

But then,,, it has a star on the front.. so no one asks.. they just
presume.. ;))

Maybe the original has a formed coupling on the evap end like some

There's a thought!

The stealer wants $13.50 each and has none in stock. I could not
find a bike shoppe to scrounge a used tube from, so I was gonna try
the stealer. After pricing those, the obvious occurred to me: I can
go to el mercado de gato merde wall, and BUY a new tube for probably
$4. That way I don't have to chase down a bike shoppe.

Tomorrow plan B is executed. BUY a bike tube and cut it up.

Plan C was to grind out the tunnel holes so the heater hose will fit.
Plan B is easier.

Re: [MBZ] The epitome of MB quality, comfort, and engineering

2016-02-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Roger,

I can’t be 100% neutral on this because I’ve never owned a W116. I’ve sat in
and driven some nice ones, but never enough to really be able to form an
impression. I think a couple of my concerns were the dreaded servo ACC system
and the number of them that I have seen nearly fully consumed by the tin worm.
That’s not to say the W126 models didn’t rust - they do, in all the same places
that others like the W123 models do, too.

I seriously considered a 1979 350SE(?) that was a beautiful car, but I couldn’t
reach a point of agreement with the seller. And - it was green! It was a
great ride and drove very well for its age.

Re: [MBZ] Not an Oil Thread - Mann vs. Mahle

2016-02-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I bought a bundle (6) of Mercedes oil filters from a guy who is a tech at a
dealer over on the east coast of Florida. While I can’t prove it, I’m pretty
well convinced that they’re bogus filters. First of all, they’re Mann filters
but stamped as having origin in India. Mann doesn’t make filters in India that
I know of, but Mahle does. Second, the sticker with the Mercedes part
information is printed on the box - it’s not a sticker. Everything I buy from
my dealer has stickers on the boxes.

I have used a couple of them after closely inspecting them inside and out both
before and after use and they seem OK, but I’m still skeptical.

I buy stuff in bulk from Mann online, so these have been relegated to back up
duty in the event that I run out and need one in a pinch.

Talking to a W126 owner and they were complaining about their cruise not
working. It’s been years since I dealt with this stuff - who does cruise
amps these days? Wasn’t Beckmann one of the places?

It depends.
Twice a year I buy two jugs for about $25-27 each, and get a $10-12 rebate on
each one.
That's not much money for 5 gallons a year.

Mitch.

George doesn’t repair them himself, I believe, he brokers them from others and
just marks up the price.

He’s MBCA old guard who used their positions to benefit from the club members.
I would never refer anyone to him unless it was an enemy.

Dan banned from the MBCA
