It just takes more water - even a J-3 cub with 65HP can take the water with
floats - if there's enough water. Rate of climb is also less, but adequate.

Curt,
The car had a sticker from some quick lube place. I would bet that the oil
wasn't synthetic or anything close to the 507.00 spec. The "CHANGE OIL NOW"
message came on 200 miles into the trip home to Oregon. Beetle juice will be
getting top notch care from now on.

2016-07-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I hadta Google it to see for myself. Looks like your engine is cross-flow where
the older TDI engines (at least from the '05 PD back) have intake and exhaust
on the same side.
Sidebar: At first I was thinking that cross-flow is kind of weird since you'd
have to pipe from the turbo to the intake but if you're already piping to the
front of the engine for an inter-cooler it kind of makes sense.
The oil filter on your car is just slightly more obscure than on my '05 Golf
TDI and thats only because of the intake on your car. My '98 Jetta has a can
oil filter thats a bear, its nearly horizontal pointed at the front of the car
just almost touching the fan shroud. Its got not more than 1/8" of clearance
when removed, glad I don't have to do it often.
It'd be interesting to know what oil your car had in it previous, VW
dealerships are notorious for not following VW standards. I'd think in 15k
miles there wouldn't really have been time for anything seriously bad to
happen...

Hello listers.  Today, I finally had the time and equipment to change the oil
in my Beetle TDI 15Kmi.  I set up my topsider, took out the dipstick, and
pumped it up.  It worked flawlessly!  To get to the oil filter, I had to remove
the decorative engine cover which is held in place by a ball and socket mount
in each corner, I was greeted by an engine covered with wires and hoses going
every which way.  So where’s the dang oil filter???    After a few minutes of
feeling around and a few more minutes on Google, I found an informative post
describing the exact location and the 32mm socket needed for removal.  Luckily,
Dad gave me all his tools once he could no longer work on cars, so I found the
ratchet, socket, and the appropriate extension.  It had to be long enough for
the ratchet to clear the cooling line just above the filter housing.  It broke
loose easily, but I had to finish the last few turns by hand since I needed
clearance to remove the socket.  I had to be careful when removing the filter
from the spring-loaded mechanism that holds it onto the inside of the cap since
the plastic teeth can break off.  This went off without a hitch.  I then
lubricated and inserted the provided filter cap o-ring and mounted the new
filter.  The installation of the filter also went well.  The kit I bought came
with a 5.0l jug of Ravenol 5w/30 full synthetic motor oil that meets the VW
507.00 specification.  I put in the 4.3l (4.54qt of oil and fired it up.  The
engine sounded quieter and smoother.  I’m sure that the next one will take haf
the time if I don’t forget by the time I reach the 10Kmi interval.

I believe military issue in the mid sixties was Hamilton, but if not
probably a Bulova, both top manufactures in the US.

I suspect also autowind models rather than electronic or electric due to
sealing issues and humidity in Viet Nam, although that would account for
failures in the jungle. Batteries aren't a field replacement option on
watches.

Theoretically DNA wouldn't store as much data since more atoms would be
involved, although a working, saleable hard disc based on DNA would be a more
likely possibility using current technology. Has such a disc using DNA been

2016-07-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There have got to be a lot of younger gearheads around to have restored this
plane, considering that it’s taken over 16 years to do it.

Also remember that it’s in Wichita, a very airplane-centric place for a lot of
reasons…

I think this is great. My Dad, who was a flight engineer on a B-29 in WWII,
had always hoped there would one day be a restored aircraft that flew. He was
a member of the “Confederate” Air Force just so he could get rides in some of
these old birds. I’m pretty sure he got to fly in “Fifi” before he passed.

I don't live in a bad area but we have been broken into a couple of
times on the street in front of our house. They broke the window in
my d-in-l's car and punched the locks out of my 02 Supercrew on
separate occasions. Someone took the star off the hood on my car
while parked in a lot in front of a store etc. I knew kids back in
the day who sort of collected shifter knobs from cars.
We left a set of keys hanging in the door of one of our cars over a
weekend a few years back and the keys and the car were still there
when we got back. It was on the curb side so that likely helped.

DELFT, Netherlands, July 18 (UPI) -- Researchers in the Netherlands have
unveiled the world's smallest hard disk.

The disk uses chlorine atoms to represent each bit of information, the most
efficient data storage method yet devised. The hard disk stores 1 kilobyte of
data, or 8,000 bits, and features a storage density of 500 Terabits per square
inch -- 500 times better than the most efficient hard desk on the market.

"In theory, this storage density would allow all books ever created by humans to be
written on a single post stamp," lead researcher Sander Otte, a scientist with the
Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University, said in a news release.

Researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to manipulate atoms to
represent binary code, the language used to encode data in computers.

"Every bit consists of two positions on a surface of copper atoms, and one chlorine atom that
we can slide back and forth between these two positions," Otte explained. "If the
chlorine atom is in the top position, there is a hole beneath it -- we call this a 1. If the hole
is in the top position and the chlorine atom is therefore on the bottom, then the bit is a 0."

Using the scanning tunneling microscope, scientists can drag holes around on a
copper surface to encode all kinds of information. Researchers liken the hard
disk to a sliding puzzle, where each piece is either an atom or a hole.

Because each chlorine in atom is surrounded by other chlorine atoms, they
remain stable and stationary. Previous attempts to encode data on the atomic
scale have relied on loose, unanchored atoms.

The data on the hard disk is organized into blocks of 8 bytes, or 64 bits. Each
block has a marker made of holes that works like a bar code, revealing the
location of of the block on the copper layer.

The new method promises major improvements in terms of stability and
scalability, but the technology requires significant improvement before it can
be used in a working datacenter.

"In its current form the memory can operate only in very clean vacuum conditions and at liquid
nitrogen temperature, 77 Kelvins, so the actual storage of data on an atomic scale is still some
way off," Otte said. "But through this achievement we have certainly come a big step
closer."

I think they took the usual "TD" to mean turbo diesel instead of that it's

Re: [MBZ] Jaime, are these guys anybody you know?

2016-07-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Au contraire a bad dealership is a direct reflection on Mercedes-Benz. They may
not want it to be but it is.
An example is how nobody in the TDI community will take their car to a VW
dealer for service. Its become abundantly clear in the community that taking
your car to VW for service = Broken car. The number of stories of VW dealers
putting timing belt tensioners in backwards is staggering. So sadly a
dealership with competent techs is painted with a broad brush...

I recently was an employee for a Mercedes Benz Dealership in South Jersey. I
worked for the body shop and it was as if working for a no name chop shop body
shop. They do not care for their customers, all they want is the insurance
money. The best part is that the body shop manager is hooked on oxycontin and

vehicles and from the body shop itself and blames the employees. So what i did
to cover the rest of the employees is record the manager stealing/ selling what
does not belong to him. I take this information to the general service manager

managers in that dealership are a team, they look out for each other. One
