Along with the hedge logs, I had some logs from a sweet gum tree and a
maple. The hedge logs were solid and dense whereas the gum and maple
logs were soft and half disintegrated.

Re: [MBZ] 140 3.2 Opinion

2016-10-10 Thread clay via Mercedes
AS long as you are not expecting to race it or have it blast around like a
super car, the W140 does fine with an inline 6. More power than the older
cars, but not that much. Far more complex than the older cars. A w124 is
pretty light compared to either the 126 or 140. I am pretty please with the
OM603 in the SDL. It is not a rocket like the R107, the S430 has a newer
transmission, and the added pistons have a bit of power. I thought the OM606
NA was powerful enough for my needs. My kid was able to chirp tires and get
that car to spin 180 from a dead stop into a phone pole within its own
wheelbase.

Depends on what your expectations are

Badgers are fairly large burrowing animals, with a nasty disposition and
a nasty set of teeth. They will burrow near a fence cornerpost and knock
down two miles of fence (at least out here in the west) by doing so.

We caught one running down the lane on the south side of the 80 acres we
had south of Calhan, Colorado. The lane was on the north side of our
neighbor's fenced field and on the south side of our unfenced field.

We were headed east on the lane to go visit the neighbor and came upon the
badger, also headed east. As we approached in our 4000# Willys Utility
Wagon, the badger turned north into our field. I followed in the Utility
wagon.

I had to run him over 8 times before he stopped moving.

Problem with all the chainsaw "advise" is that that osage orange wood is
hard as hell when green and when it dries it basically cannot be cut
with much of anything, even carbide blades. That's why it makes great
wood planes and things like that, if you get it when it is workable.

I can't remember if it is like teak with lots of mineral content or if
it just hard and dense.

Hot chain stretches, runs loose in the blade guides, which makes the chain

the blade more quickly descending spiral of success.

Sharp teeth, properly tension ed on the blade and properly lubed [if your
saw has an "automatic chain lube feature" it's seldom getting enough lube
for wood as hard as Osage Orange.] I much prefer the manual chain lube
equipped saws.

Best advise I can give you on when to sharpen your saw is to look at the
chips coming out of the cut. When your saw is razor sharp and freshly
sharpened, look at those chips.. use them as the "benchmark" look, as the
teeth dull, the saw will work harder to do less work and the chips will
tell you "time to stop and sharpen the teeth..

Osage Orange is one of the hardest woods to machine.. it's grain is close
and tight. Good luck.

sharpened chain will cut like new. I learned this the hard way after

I don't have any yet. I just about ruined the chain on my chain saw

cutting off

some of the larger limbs. This wood is HARD and dense. I am trying to

cut

off as much as I can to thin them out and maybe I'll be able to get them

cut

down later. My 5 year old son's favorite activity now is having a fire.

I have a

fire pit and for the last few weeks we have a fire every weekend burning

all

the small sticks and limbs that I have collected over the last few years.

I had

several logs from a hedge tree I cut down 4-5 years ago next to my shed.
Along with the hedge logs, I had some logs from a sweet gum tree and a
maple. The hedge logs were solid and dense whereas the gum and maple
logs were soft and half disintegrated.

Agree with the Klebster. $6k for either car is realistic, if not still a
little high, but nicer cars with low mileage and/or provenance are money well
spent, IMHO. Better to spend it up front and buy the best possible example
than go low and have loads of trouble.

Glad to get some validation on the 3.2 in the W140. It was a concern for me as
well until I drove the one last year. I was pleasantly surprised.

[MBZ] Bonehead

2016-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I park in a parking garage at my office. The space I park in is one of two
that are sandwiched between two block walls. There is room for two vehicles to
fit in the area without having to squeeze out of the door. I normally park
well to the right against a wall so the person in the other space has plenty of
room. This is usually another employee I work with, or if they’re late, some
guy with a big red Dodge pickup truck, who swings wide because he won’t back up
and straighten out to pull into the space.

So today as I’m pulling out of my garage I hear a big “pop” sound and realize I
forgot to clear a plastic container with a set of old H4 bulbs in it.
Realizing that the metal part of the bulb might have damaged my right front
tire, when I pulled into my parking space this morning I moved towards the
middle of the space, evenly spacing my car between the yellow lines, with a
good 8”-12” on each side of the car between the car and the painted lines.
That way if I had to change a tire should it have been damaged and leaked down
during the day I can get to that side of the car.

Wife had doctor’s appointment I was attending, so about 9:40 I go down to get
in the car. There’s a note stuffed in the gap between my doors:

"Sorry, but I scrapped (sic) against your car this morning. It doesn’t look
bad, but please let me know what to do and I’ll work things out with you.”
(phone number)

Arrgh.

Left rear quarter is scuffed and left rear taillight is cracked. When I got it
out in the sun I could see a dimple in the middle of the panel. The trailing
edge of the fender where the tail light opening starts has the paint rubbed
down to the primer. I took plenty of pictures of my car, its’ position and the
big red truck, which was clearly swung way over into my space when it pulled in
and had black paint on the bumper where it had rubbed against my car.

So I called the guy and he was pretty contrite. He said if it was below his
deductible he would just give me the money, otherwise I could file a claim with
his insurer. I told him to put it in writing in an email, which he did, even
admitting fault and including his insurance contact information and policy
number. (Nice!)

So I went to the local ding and dent place, a chain called “Carsmetics”, for a
quick estimate.

Around $475 for the paint work. LKQ has no left rear taillights for my car, so
the only other choice they have is to go with new from MBUSA.

+$1100.00!!!

I had them write up an estimate with and without the tail light. I’m thinking
if his deductible is $500 I’ll ask him for $550 and I’ll source the tail light
assembly (easily found on eBay for $60-$80.)

But only after I give him the $1700.00 estimate.

The 3.2 liter in the W140 is fine. I would encourage you to test drive the car
and see for yourself.

I considered a 1997 S320 last year. It was the first one I ever drove, and I
took it out on the interstate and thrashed it with all the accessories on and
it was fine. Granted, it wouldn’t chirp tires like my S500 would, but it did
not seem underpowered or anemic.

$10k is way too much for that car, even with the low mileage. Maybe $6k,
primarily the premium for the low miles and if it has service records.

99 is the last and best model year of the W140.

During mid-morning break one day during this time, I noticed one of the
flaperons, part of the flap that would spill (hinge upward) with the
aileron

to aid lateral control at low airspeeds, was in the spilled position - an
unnatural condition with no power on the aircraft.
Investigating what was holding the flaperon in the spilled position,
I
found two nice open-end wrenches jammed in between the actuator levers
and

the wing rib structure above. This could have caused serious structural
damage to the wing if somebody had turned the battery switch on or
started
the external power unit (MD-3). Hydraulic pressure at 3000 psi would
likely

have suddenly shoved the wrenches upward through the wing.
I removed the two wrenches and waited for the owner to return from
break, at which time, I had a serious "talk" with him about the dangers
of

leaving wrenches in flight controls. He tried to give me a lame excuse
about making it easier to grease flap rollers and tracks, and I warned
him

that if I found the wrenches in the wing again, they were going be mine.
Later, when I returned from lunch, guess what! I found the flaperon
on

the other side of the airplane held in the spilled position with the same
wrenches!! 'Didn't even confront the culprit this time - just took the
wrenches as promised and put 'em in my tool box, where they remain today.
Every time I've used 'em for the last 57 years I've thought of that
careless

mechanic and that B-47 with no holes punched in the wings.

Re: [MBZ] Hedge wood was RE: OT Latest track

2016-10-10 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Keep the chain sharp, and keep it well lubricated. A dull chain heats up
fast, a poorly lubricated chain heats up fast.

Hot chain stretches, runs loose in the blade guides, which makes the chain
wobble so it doesn't bite into the wood at the correct angle, which dulls
the blade more quickly descending spiral of success.

Osage Orange is one of the hardest woods to machine.. it's grain is close
and tight. Good luck.

[MBZ] OT- Wrenches Jammed in B-47 flight controls

WRENCHES IN FLIGHT CONTROLS

I was an A/2C (E-3) B-47E maintenance crew chief in the 98th Bomb Wing

Ah okay. Front panel between washer and dryer Un screws. Then remove screws for
front and top. Take off. Unhook spring for idler pulley. Lift dr‎um and remove.
Replacement bearing is a stainless steel ball on drum, nylon cup on dryer back.
There is also a spring and ball bearing in the cup (static discharge) that
needs replaced too. Don't be surprised to find it packed full off lint, and
evidence of scorching on the felt drum seal at the rear. There are also uhmw
wear strips supporting the front of the drum to be replaced. Clean all the lint
front the inside of the door and that should do it.

Small kerfuffle last night after the rain. A tree next door fell across the
street, taking out her power line and denting a red Ford SUV.

This is the same dead tree that my wife sent letters about to the Park and Rec.

Power co. restored power this morning.

The big hollow oak at the corner will be the next to go. Such an exciting life

I guess I exorcised the various demons inhabiting the generator. It was
running and stopping intermittently then after sundown it ran fine for
about 4 hours until I shut it off. This morning it has been running for
about 4 hours no hiccups.

2 things -- it sorta vibrated itself off the brick walk onto the dirt
which has minimized the vibarrations, and I checked the oil and it was a
bit lower in the sump this morning having burned some off I guess. Maybe
either or both of those things have done the exorcism, I'm not going to
test either possibility.

Power co estimated yesterday 3-5 days to get power back but then there was
a report that the substation had been energized but they have not turned
on anything yet. Sounds kinda sketchy. In any case the fridge is cold
and making ice so I guess I am OK though the dogs are going insane over
the generator, they think there is a constant car coming activity or
something.

That's true, we have to deal with Tornados AND you are right, there isn't as
much warning for tornados. But, we don't have to deal with a tidal surge on
top of the wind. I don't know if this is scientifically proven, but based on
my observations Tornados in Kansas seem to avoid the more densely populated
areas. In Wichita, there have been significant tornados that hit the outskirts
of the city, but damage inside the city is usually pretty rare (currently
knocking on wood). Obviously there are exceptions. What we have to deal with
in Wichita is hail and wind damage from storms that don't quite become
tornados. There are more of them and they are more frequent but usually less
destructive.

If we could have a big storm that would knock down a couple of hedge (Osage
Orange) trees I would be pretty happy about that!

Where tornadoes show up, do their damage, and are gone in a matter of an hour
or two. With a hurricane, the warning times is measured in days!

On my sears driers the top tilts back, you have to undo the drive belt
by springing the tensioner underneath, then the whole drum can be lifted
out -- it has some kind of fabric sort of gasket in the front that it
moves on, and the rollers at the back, it is not fixed in there other
than by gravity.

I rode my bike to the beach this afternoon. Saw 3 people, an old hippie
couple walking on the beach looking for stuff, and on the boardwalk as I
was coming back a kinda weird dude. I spoke to him, he looked kinda "off"
and mumbled something.

I get back up the road and see 2 vehicles parked. One an SUV with a
surfboard and some hippie-type stickers, and an E320CDI.
