I did not have the lights attached. Best not to create too much interest.
Coppers were chatting donuts in the median as we blew past. Within speed
limit, just confused the LEO and he had to check the tags, which are
appropriate for WA collector car being tabbed 1986 and period appropriate
plates.

A few hours before we hit the road, the frakkin’ parking nazi came by and gave
a citation. Meter maid is not conversant with WA licensing law.

Re: [MBZ] Polei drives to ND

2017-02-26 Thread clay via Mercedes
IT was a desperation move. The POS W220 is in the shop, the R107 is not going
on long winter drives, and the Free 300SD is not registered. Nobody around
here was at all supportive of the idea of taking her, but I knew she was the
only car I had that just might make it. Drive it like it stole it, in the
snow and all the rest. I was holding my breath the whole way there, until we
were less than 200 miles from Williston. That was AAA range for a tow.

Hills were scalable, as were mountain passes. Sometimes it was a struggle to
get up them at speed, or hold speed, but she came right back up with no issues.
MT speeds are in the 80mph range. Best to keep her just under that.

A person should always do his diligence when he get a new ride.

#1 boy is learning that the hard way. I made sure we did fluids and
filters on his SE. He chose not to do the wire harness or head gasket
which we knew needed attention when he picked it up. He did not
winterize the car and in a deep freeze with summer oil and other
climate ignoring he blew the top radiator hose at -30c. That put the
car out of service. December of 2016.

He borrowed a car for almost two months to be able to get to work, and
then picked up a 2006 Jeep cherokee. No inspection or other attention.
He drove it out to the coast from ND last week, having owned it a
week. This was a deal he and SWMBA made without my input. I pointed
out it was just another Benz, which SWMBA now hates. While being a
passenger I heard some not pleasing to the brain noises. Turns out no
upkeep seems to have been done for a number of years. Extreme
condition driving location. The brake fluid was BLACK. I thought the
diffs were grindy. The whole drive line needed fluid and filters along
with a bunch of other attention. He and I had done an oil change the
evening before he was heading back to ND (1200 mile drive). When he
tried to leave, his CEL went crazy. He ended up taking it to Yeep
deeler and had to leave it while i hauled his butt to ND so he would
not get fired for failing to clock in at work for 14 days. Plugs and
wires needed attention as well as needing to clean out the air intake
that was almost completely blocked. Clean air filter though.

Considering that most vehicles NEVER get it changed, I think 60 k is
safe, esp with M1. I try to change it in every MB I buy, then don't
worry about it much other than a level check now and then. But most
of my MBs don't get 100k on them after I bought it. 240D is about
there, the first SDL was well over 200K, so it got changed again, and

Re: [MBZ] Lumber question

2017-02-26 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I believe that OSB crap is the most dimensionally unstable wood product
ever invented or sawed. 7/16 sheeting becomes 5/8 thick after being in
the normal air for a couple years and stabilizing. Is there a vapor
barrier under the floor? I am guessing you have the cheaped out 3/4 OSB
crap (23/32) and it has swollen to 1"Real 3/4" plywood is 10 times
better, especially for floors. Of course if you live in parts of CA, AZ
or NV, ymmv in the desert. I suspect over the next 20-50 years there
will be a whole lot of that crap torn out and replaced. Not an easy
proposition when the whole building is built on the deck covered with OSB.

They used sawdust glued together with urea-formaldahyde or worse, water
soluble glue in trailer houses for years.a few drops of water and
you get a hole in the floor. Bad deal.

And now they have priced 3/4 plywood out o sight. Not good!

I think the 3/4 AWWF (.60) treated plywood might be cheaper than plain
plywood if you are building a house and buying 20 or more sheets at a
time. The folks that use plywood for basement walls need to be
competitive. About 5 yrs ago it was very competitive with regular
plywood and not much more than the OSB crap.

Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
February 26, 2017 at 5:24 PM
Yesterday while at Lowes we bought 23/32 osb subflooring which
appeared to be too thin compared to the subfloor in the house. When I
measured our existing floor I get 1". There appears to be no such
thing as 1". We took it back and got the 1 1/8 which I figure maybe I
was reading it wrong by an 8th of an inch on the measuring tape. Got
it home cut to fit and where as the trim base boards around the rest
of the room have a gap big enough for the previous tile and will allow
the pergo to slide up under, this subfloor fits right up with the trim
board with no room, it is obviously is just a little thicker than what
is in the house. So our options appear to be to either leave it as is
and use quarter round along the baseboard to secure the edge of the
pergo, or we are going to have to go back with the smaller and I'm
afraid it may be way too short compared to the adjacent subflooring. Wtf?

It is NOT an '85.

[MBZ] Lumber question

2017-02-26 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Yesterday while at Lowes we bought 23/32 osb subflooring which appeared to be
too thin compared to the subfloor in the house. When I measured our existing
floor I get 1". There appears to be no such thing as 1". We took it back and
got the 1 1/8 which I figure maybe I was reading it wrong by an 8th of an inch
on the measuring tape. Got it home cut to fit and where as the trim base boards
around the rest of the room have a gap big enough for the previous tile and
will allow the pergo to slide up under, this subfloor fits right up with the
trim board with no room, it is obviously is just a little thicker than what is
in the house. So our options appear to be to either leave it as is and use
quarter round along the baseboard to secure the edge of the pergo, or we are
going to have to go back with the smaller and I'm afraid it may be way too
short compared to the adjacent subflooring. Wtf?

Ah yes that was the springs.

Too bad that bar won't fit my TD. The 19 is just what I want,
along with a front that is 4 or 5mm larger. The front you might
could find enough people to make a run but the back I kind of doubt.

That's where the big difference between the hand impact and the
air or electric guns comes in. With the hand impact every time
you hit with the hammer the bit is forced into the screw head and
that alone will make it hold onto the screw much better.

those things were a required tool for working on the older bikes.

Kroil for a while then pop the screw heads a good lick or two
with a hammer and try again to loosen them.
Rinse and repeat and if not you could also put the hex driver in
and hit that good and hard with a hammer. sooner or later it
should come loose.

Worse comes to worse just drill out the head just enough for it
to pop off, take the stop off and use a vise grip to turn what's
left of the screw out. Without the head they usually come out
real easy.

[MBZ] Floor joist repair

2017-02-26 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Following is an article on the subject of excessive water in attics and
crawlspaces 'bout 20 years ago; the physics hasn't changed:

EXCESSIVE MOISTURE IN ATTICS & CRAWLSPACES
By Wilton Strickland

A combination of excessive moisture (high relative humidity in the
affected area), inadequate ventilation and cool surfaces in attics and
under-floor crawlspaces can cause condensation and/or fungal growth, rot,
etc., on the undersides of roof & floor structures and lead to serious
damages to the structures. Generally, if wood has a moisture content of
more than about 20%, significant damage can occur, but a moisture meter is
not needed to be able to see that wood and insulation are soaking wet and
dripping with condensation or badly stained and/or covered with significant
staining, surface damage or fungal growth and to know that the wood is wet
enough, or has been wet enough, for serious damages to occur if these
conditions persist. Designers, builders and homeowners should be aware of
and understand this potential problem in order to combat it adequately.
Home inspectors should be able to recognize and understand the problem in
order to properly report it and recommend improvements to alleviate it.
Condensation occurs on building surfaces when the relative humidity is high,
ventilation is poor & the surfaces are cool. Relative humidity is expressed
as a percentage of moisture present in air relative to the amount of
moisture the same air can hold. Generally, warmer air can hold more
moisture than cooler air. When air is cooled below its "dew" point (the
temperature at which the air is saturated or has 100% relative humidity),
some of the moisture condenses into visible water, such as fog, rain, snow,
dew, etc.
This same action causes condensation to form on surfaces of cool objects
that cause the air in immediate contact with the object to cool below the
dew point. For example, condensation on the outside of cold drink glasses,
the insides of cold car and house windows or dew on grass. If enough air
(ventilation) is moving across these surfaces, however, the condensation
does not form - air in contact with the surface does not have time to be
cooled below the dew point.
In confined areas of buildings with inadequate or reduced ventilation,
condensation forms when warm, moist air comes in contact with a surface cold
enough to cool the air in immediate contact with the surface below the dew
point - just like the cold drink glass or car windows. This can occur even
in heated areas with poorly insulated walls and ceilings, inside closets or
any area with poor ventilation, high humidity and cool surfaces.
Condensation often forms on the cold underside of roof sheathing and on
rafters when warm, moist air rising from the living area comes in contact
with the cold roof structure.
It is usually not economically feasible to try to keep moisture from
getting into the attic from the living space. Moisture enters the living
space from several sources: the ground under the house, the air around us,
cooking, laundry, gas logs, bathing, breathing, evaporation from our bodies,
from plants, etc. Moisture from some of these sources can be reasonably
reduced (by reducing water entering the crawlspace from in the yard and off
the roof, by improved vapor barriers and ventilation in crawlspaces and
improved ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms), but much of
this moisture cannot be reasonably eliminated. Moisture is a natural
byproduct of human life.
Therefore, this moisture must be allowed to escape to the outside
without doing damage to the structure. The most natural way for the
moisture to escape is to rise through the ceiling into the attic. If
adequate ventilation is not maintained in the attic during cold weather,
this moisture can condense on the cold underside of the roof and, in time,
cause serious damage to the structure. Maintaining good attic ventilation,
therefore, is very important year-round - not just in summer. Condensation
does not form on the underside of the roof during hot weather because the
roof is usually much warmer than air in the attic at that time. Attic
ventilation is important in summer to reduce the potential for damage to the
shingles from overheating and to reduce the cooling load in the house, but
it is important in winter to let moisture in the house escape to the outside
without damaging the roof structure. Attic vents should not be blocked or
sealed in winter!
If there are dark, mildew-type stains or wetness on the underside of the
roof or on the rafters not caused by a leak, the homeowner should try to
improve ventilation in the affected area of the attic. This can be done by
installing additional soffit vents & by adding ridge vent(s) or wind
turbines on the roof. The most efficient attic venting system takes
advantage of natural convection - the natural tendency for warm air

Re: [MBZ] Today's 300SEL Fun (so far)

2017-02-26 Thread MG via Mercedes
I just did the right front outer wheel bearing on my TD 2 weeks
ago. I was hearing a rumbling noise, first only on left turns and
then after about a week started hearing it on straight line also.
Took the cap off, popped the bearing out and sure enough saw
metal flakes in the grease. Found out why when I got it cleaned
off. Made in Mexico. I remembered then about when I put the
bearing kits on there about 10k miles ago I was thinking that
wasn't very good. The other side is still OK for now but I did
order one for there to be done when needed.

Also put in a diff Sat before last that I got from a junk yard
out of an 84 TD. Don't know if they had a different ration or if
the previous owner had put one in there from some other car but
my TD now goes 5mph faster on the GPS then indicated by the
speedo at 65. Before they had been in agreement. No tags on the
either diff.

Does anyone know if the report of the original equipment from the
dealer would include what the ratio was?

I need to find a speedo that works right with this diff because I
did notice that the engine is a bit quieter when at high speed
though I must say that it did loose just a little bit on the
acceleration from a stop.

I will find out if I get any better mileage. The speed and
distance traveled between the GPS and the speedo say about 5.5%
added to the odometer should give the right miles traveledso I'll
see what happens.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

OMG. I have never had an O2 sensor be so stubborn.

After nearly 45 minutes of everything from pounding on the O2 sensor socket

ViceGrips and lots of Kroil, turning every 1/8 turn or so that I could get,
backing off, soaking with Kroil, then turning again.

Little bugger finally came out.

I will be paying for this tomorrow, I’m sure.

So while I grab some lunch and give my upper body a break, I’ll let things air
out and be ready for the new O2 sensor.

Some other potentially good news:

Owner said the right front tire (nearly new Michelins) had a bad belt. You
definitely got the “rump-rump-rump” thing from the right front, but I was
wondering if it could possibly be a bad wheel bearing. I figured not, since
whenever I’ve heard a bad wheel bearing it’s always been a grinding sound.

While the front end was off the ground I spun the front right wheel. I could
hear the “rump-rump-rump” sound.

So if I’m living right it’s got a bad wheel bearing. Maybe there’s just one
roller that’s bad or has a bad/flat spot on it? Let’s hope so.

wrote:

So back under the car I go to soak the O2 sensor with some Kroil before I try

More interesting stuff:

PO had said that there was a switch on the transmission his indie disconnected
that controlled shifts based on temperature. That is, it delayed shifts until
the car got up to operating temperature, or so he recalled being told. Since I
don’t have a lot of experience with W126 gassers (my last one was in the late
90s with the Deathmobile) I took his word for it and figured I would find out.

So as I’m looking around the transmission area after finishing with the Kroil,
I see a wire with one of the O ring seal connectors on it, like on a brake pad
wear sensor.

Hmm.

I look around, and see a black block bolted to the flywheel housing that a
couple of hard lines are going to from the transmission. There’s a matching
socket on it, for sure, that fits this mystery connector.

I got the number off of the part and ran it through the online EPC. Nothing.
???

So I google the number, and lo and behold, it’s a kickdown solenoid. I do some
digging in another online parts database and sure enough, that’s it. But -

At least not for now. I’m not going to reconnect it just yet, as I don’t want

Re: [MBZ] W126 Door Latch

2017-02-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Get replacements on hand and drill the old ones out.

They’re stupidly soft for some weird reason. My driver’s door strike can loose
without effort, but in the interim I was going to swap the rear onto the
driver’s door until the replacement came. The rear door bolts all tried to
round off, so I left them alone.

At least that would be my approach. They would be easy to drill out and simple
to grab ahold of once the strike is removed.

Re: [MBZ] Today's 300SEL Fun (Sunday)

2017-02-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got the Leatherique cleaned up and done. Leather recovered well, the only
issue being that Leatherique darkens any splits or cracks. Not a big deal,
just an appearance thing. I’ve got a new armrest cover coming from my
upholstery guy in CA - $20 shipped.

Got the trunk badge cleaned up and installed, including painting the accent
line below the characters. Painted the radiator badge, too. Found an
auxiliary input cable for the Kenwood stereo that’s in it on Amazon for $9, so
that’s on the way. Got my dealer parts order all ready to text in tomorrow
morning. Thinking about taking Wednesday off so I can get everything done at
once - caliper, wheel bearing and flex disc among other things.

Danged oak trees are doing their spring thing, meaning that any dark colored
car has a near permanent yellow dusting on it. The youngest boy had to go up
to Williston Saturday and Sunday to do his SCUBA and Nitrox qualifications in
the springs, so I had him drive my car (which loved every minute of that open
highway cruising.) I gave it a quick wash and immediately put the car cover on
it. Between the cover and being parked in a closed garage at work it should
stay pretty clean.

Cleaning up before some friends come over for dinner.

[MBZ] Problem with the web site?

2017-02-26 Thread MG via Mercedes

Has anyone tried going to the main page on the Okiebenz site
http://okiebenz.com/

A friend to whom I recommended that he join the group since he
has an 82 or so 300CD can't get anywhere off that page. Nothing
works so he can't apply to join the list. I tried the same and
had the same problem. Nothing on the main page will go anywhere.

I know I can send him a link but I figured if we are both having
that problem then how many others who might want to join are
having that problem.

Re: [MBZ] Floor joist repair

2017-02-26 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Looks like a good job. By the way, the sill plate must be pressure treated
according to most codes.

Water Intrusion: It may be hard to locate the water intrusion. Typical
leaks are caused by poor flashing and sealing at doors and windows (it only
takes a small gap). But water can travel amazing distances horizontally
before it's visible down below so the hose method requires patience. If you
see look inside the attic with a good light, any chronic roof leaks should
be immediately visible on the inside as discolored (gray/black) sheathing.
I have read that water will accumulate behind the brick siding (it's porous)
unless there are proper drainage provisions (e.g. weep holes much lower than
any wood).

By the way, if the local building inspector is not overworked (or an a-hole)
you can often get instant local-code advice by phone.

Pressure treated wood is treated wet, else the treatment will not penetrate.
Be careful when buying construction lumber, it is NOT all kiln dried -- quite a

it won't bleed, it's essentially the same moisture content as when cut. It
will shrink quite a bit, and warp while doing so.

Check for the kiln dry marks, if it's not fully marked, it's not dry.

It will also not be dry if stored in the weather, which most "big box" stores
do -- it sits uncovered both at the store before being brought inside to sell,

It is in the kitchen area but any plumbing is on the other side of the room, I
check that area under the house and no leaks or wood rot in that area.

2017-02-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Kaleb,
Seems the elusive water leak has not been located. Is it possible there is
a plumbing fitting somewhere that is leaking as it enters the floor. I seem
to recall this is in the kitchen area.

A small fitting leak that dripped could migrate along a beam or joist
perhaps? Just thinking, but could it be an internal leak rather than an
external one?

The thing I've found with Lowes or Home Depot wood is its always heavy with
water, like its been stored in a lake or something.
Our local lumberyard stores framing lumber outside and its always drier than
the stuff from Lowes or HD. Usually priced the same or slightly cheaper.

Pressure treated lumber from lowes or home despot is not much better
than plain lumber.  Some brands have changed chemicals and designation,
but the vintage 2000 chemical was .20 lowes, .40 lumberyard, and .60 for
wood foundations. (or stuff you really wanted to last.  I have picked up
or ordered .60 for several projects.  Like replacing the rotted bottom
plate and stud bottoms for my garage.  Some big box "treated " lumber
was as low as .12.  That meant the outer 1/4" or so was treated and the
rest was raw.

Yellawood uses a different chemical and has different numbers.  I
think the .13 corresponds to the .40 for the older chemical.  Buyer
beware.  lowes may have better stuff now.

I keep a one meter length of the low pressure stuff on the shelf, as it’s
almost always weeping in older cars. The cooler is on the return (low
pressure) side, so if the hoses are nasty I’ll replace them. The high pressure
hoses look pretty good.

If the PS low pressure hose is original, replace it.That might take
care of your leak. Its a good and cheap starting point.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Took the 300D out for the early morning grocery run as promised. It
was pleased to get out and stretch its legs.

I don’t really have a lot to do with the 300SEL until I start getting
some parts. Since it’s a nice sunny Florida day, I slathered the front
seats with some Leatherique and will let it bake.

I might drain and refill the power steering system since I have
everything I need for that. I’ve cleaned the PS cooler that runs in
front of the radiator so I can watch it to see if it does have a leak.
Quite honestly I don’t think it does - the junction where the hoses
connect to it look like they’ve been seeping for a long time, and I’m
wondering if it’s possible that the fluid has just been creeping down
the lines. The connection is really buried on the left front inner
fender and the clamp screws are turned towards the top, so I’ll see if
I can get in there and tighten them up, maybe.

After the Leatherique has done its thing I might do some more interior
cleaning. The dash is in great condition, but the driver and passenger
doors look sort of yellowed. I’m not sure if this is just aging or
maybe the car had a smoker in the past. If it did there’s not evidence
of it that I can find.

Washed the SL500 as it needed it. Gotta run the sweeper in the
interior and it will be good for a couple of weeks.

Going to do an inventory of future work so I can plan accordingly.
