[MBZ] blinker relay

2017-03-03 Thread clay via Mercedes
The SDL is having issues with the both the wiper speed and blinker making. I
am now thinking that it is all wrapped up in the blinker relay. I just am not
sure where this thing lives. Would it be the really big black relay living in
the fuse box, or is it a smaller thing behind the cluster?

[MBZ] Snow follies

2017-03-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
While Dan is working out his AC we're getting a little snow. Angie and I had
gone to Keene for game night and on the way back it was pretty slippy. We'd
gotten maybe 1/4" of snow but its cold, like 15F so the cars are crushing it
into an ice layer. We were driving uphill into a left hand bend when all of a
sudden a gen 4 ('99 to '04) Jetta crossed our path sliding sideways. Turns out
she'd slowed to avoid and accident and got hit by the van behind her.
I grabbed the binders thinking "Yeah right, we're going to slide right into
her" but to my surprise between the snow tires and the ABS our '05 Golf (also a
gen4) didn't even waver and slowed down smartly. I navigated around the Jetta
and accelerated just before our trailing vehicle would have hit us. We got
pulled off to the side and stopped, I got out to go see if the other driver
needed help and very nearly fell on my butt, it was that slippery.
She wasn't hurt but the trunk and bumper on her car were all stove in and she'd
slid down the bank enough she'll need a tow. We waited with her until the
police showed up, meanwhile a plow truck came by.
Didn't help though, trying to climb into Troy we got behind a Durango that was
having a helluva time making the hill. Troy is tough, you climb a big hill, go
back down and then climb again. I actually pulled off halfway up the hill, the
vehicle behind us had no concept of safe following distance and I didn't fancy
being a sandwich. I let them get well ahead before I tried again and about 3/4
of the way up the hill even we were having a challenging time, I kept the Golf
in 3rd at about 1600 rpm, enough power to move the car but not really any for
spinning, I was keeping out of the turbo, trying to drive it like a 240D.
The south side of Troy we got into deeper snow, an inch or maybe two but it was
really windy and the wind was making snow devils that made it hard to see. We
forged on though and made it safely. The ride north took us 30mins, south was
90. Angie knows its bad out when I drive with both hands...

built my house. And the DW is a Maytag, but I don't remember the disposal,
GE maybe?

Now to the serious side, can't you just put in some drano or some sort,

after all, it cleans hair clogs in the other drain lines?

Good luck and best wishes,

[MBZ] Snappy Rims

2017-03-03 Thread clay via Mercedes
I took the free SD out to get her new shoes. Well, new to her, used tires.
The PnP I prefer has a separate wheel shop that does a good business on
installs. I got a nice set of Yokohama for the Bundts.

There are a number of Benz that have passed through the yard, and I had a
thought that upgrading to 15 or 16 inch might be nice. I just could not find
rims with the offset I think the SD would like. What I did find was a really
nice looking AMG staggered set selling for $200. Those would be a great
investment, but I am running out of space to keep things.

Go to the web page you want to subscribe to. Click the subscribe button at the
right side of the address field. A new page may open asking if you want to
subscribe, you click “Subscribe” or whatever the button says. Menu box
opens, showing the name and folder of the subscribed page. Click “subscribe”.

Then you’ll have a bookmark in your Bookmarks list of RSS feeds. You click on
this and then the page you want to read and it brings up the latest content.

Almost forgot -

FCP Euro order came with engine and transmission mounts and an upper radiator
hose, the one on the car is pretty hard. I’ll probably leave those for later
next week.

W126 19mm rear sway bars came today, too. I’ll find time to slap one of these
on the 350SDL, as I’m dying to see how much of a difference it makes.

Did some low impact stuff as I was busy with work and dealing with the AC…

Pulled the stereo (aftermarket Sony) and installed an auxiliary input cable for
it. Ran the cable through the glove compartment.

While I had the ash tray out I replaced the light bulb in the ash tray.

Wife picked up a pair of master keys at the dealer for me, so now I have three
keys instead of one.

Noticed that I’m getting some drips of ATF under the front bumper on the left
side. Took a quick look and pretty well confirmed what I suspected earlier -
the PS cooler isn’t leaking, it’s the connection where the lines are clamped to
the ends of the cooler and they’re seeping fluid. The fluid is running down
the cooler lines to the lowest point, which is where they make a right turn
towards the radiator.

Picked up a couple cans of brake cleaner in preparation for cleaning off the
front timing cover for when I replace the seal tomorrow. I’m going to do that,
get the valve cover prepped and painted, and hopefully reseal the AC
compressor. Lofty goals but I’ve got the whole day and all my weekend
obligations except cutting the grass are pretty much done. That will leave
Sunday for the front flex disc, a fairly easy job.

I prefer not to fly due to the obliteration of civil rights. Given the
opportunity, I will drive. Most of the short hops take about the same time to

Naaa, we'll just carry rolls of quarters if they do.

They tried to revive the 2 dollar bill too. Businesses don't want it.
(no slot in the cash drawer for a $2. It died, just like the SuzieB.
In fact some businesses are trying to do away with the 10 buck
Hamilton. Your change from a twenty is 3 fives and however many dollar
bills.

Re: [MBZ] Poo. Time for New AC Compressor/Condenser

2017-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ll share when I get quotes.

I have a good friend and former neighbor who is a commercial HVAC guy that I
talked to this afternoon. He told me that trying to keep the system R22 would
be tough, as it’s near impossible to get anything built for R22 any more. One
way he said some manufacturers are getting around it is shipping the unit dry
rather than precharged.

Both contractors I’ve spoken to today said they wouldn’t do it, as permits have
to be pulled for replacement units and everything has to have an ACHI cert to
go with it. Due to the age of my air handler, both said they probably couldn’t
get a cert for it.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that I’ll get a more efficient system than I
currently have, so that will help to save a few bucks, considering that AC is a
major expense in this part of the world.

~30 years doesn't sound too bad IMO.I did my 911 lug nuts and they
came out cosmetically very nice - even using a home based system. They
didn't hold up well to the pressure from lug wrenches though. It
started by breaking through the Coating at the pressure points but
doesn't seem to have spread to other area. IMO it is a very strong
coating system and will last a long time when not exposed to high pressure.

As with any "painting" the surface prep is critical. All of the previous
coating must be carefully removed for the powder coating to have a
chance to last a long time. I'd like to do some more coating but can
never seem to find the time.

The only viable way to get him back to where he needed was to drive. My w220
is a turd and broken, so that was not an option. Not going to be able to drive
the R107, and the w126 SD was not registered or insured. That left the SDL.
Poiei was viewed by many here as a less than viable option to do a 1200 mile
trip within 22 hours. I thought she was the only option.

We had to get his guns and some stuff out of the cherokee and we took off. I
pulled the first shift. We left 2/22 at 1800 hrs out of Seattle and hit
Spokane for a fill up. The Idaho passes were a bear, as was the first MT pass.
Snow and snot in the dark. We did 12 hours of blasting along in the dark,
and got to ND a bit past lunch. I think we were doing at least 550 per tank.

I played visiting dad for less than 48 hours before taking the Amtrak back to
SEA. That was a disaster, as the train broke down in Spokane over night. By
the time I got back to SEA, I was hallucinating and it was 1700 Sunday. Train
left ND at 1050 Saturday. The chickens were pissed at me for abandoning them
for five days.

The Chrysler dealer fixed the jeep Saturday, and I really wanted to get it out
of town and get a drivable car back home. Plan was to leave SEA with it as
early Monday as I could, but the surprise snow slowed me down. I was able to
register the ’82 SD, grab the cluster out of the s430 from my indy to send to
Beckmann to rebuild, and pick up the jeep. That would have been a noon
departure, but a tanker rolled over on I-5 at I-90 and closed the region down
for hours. I was able to get back roads onto I-90 and picked up my older
cousin as co-pilot just short of Spokane.

We drove through Hell through Idaho and almost to Butte. Close to white out
conditions and sloppy slush. Once over the Continental Divide it got better.
WE pulled into Williston before 1100 local time, On the drive out, my shoes
went through an entropy zone and the soles dissolved. It was like walking
around with lace up flip flops or a duck stuck in the mud. I scored some
cheep chinee shoo and tossed our overnight bags from the jeep into Polei. Time
enough to piddle and we struck out on the freeway home.

Weather reports were calling for snow west of the Rockies. Luck was with us
and we had dry roads and sunshine.

On the trip out, the SDL had working blinkers, speedo, lights. On the return
trip, the speedo was working, but the blinkers were not, and the engine began
eating oil. I am not sure how we made it out there with no oil loss, but I
was adding quarts every few hundred miles. Granted speeds were up in the
80-90 mph range and going up hills and passes. I figured it was the high
speed and oil was not getting back to the pan. A bunch more miles and I
thought it might be the 730 cap I put on instead of the black plastic that
creates a near vacuum seal. It could be cooking out the top. When I pulled
in to fuel up, I noticed black oil drops. That would mean the patch on the pan
is failing. I will need to remove the epoxy glop and put a better patch on.

The drivers were doing fine until we got to Butte. No fuel, just piddle stop
and driver swap. Nobody had been getting decent naps either to ND or in the
six hours out. I was driving that stretch and 30 miles out of Missoula I was
less than spectacular. Cousin noticed and took over. He got us to the fuel
stop, got us giant coffee plasma to wake us up and I got us to Idaho. Cousin
did the rest of the drive and got us to his place at 0200 Wednesday. The last
hour was more hallucinations. Old guys should not drive extended periods with
no rest.

I put a few hours asleep and got up at 0930 for some breakfast and catching up
with family. I got back on the road by 1100 and back to SEA by 1520. I got
the chickens fed and watered, crawled into bed and woke up 3/2 at 1500.

[MBZ] 300SEL Fun - Yesterday

2017-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yesterday was kind of a PITA in general. You know, one of those days where
everything seems to go wrong to the point where you’re afraid to touch anything?

So I got the SKF bearing kit and got started on replacing the right front wheel
bearings. Yup, the outer bearing was definitely bad. It had a bad roller on
it that I could both feel and see.

New bearing races went into the freezer upon arrival from work. Got everything
torn apart, the old races knocked out and the inside of the hub cleaned out. I
didn’t bother taking the brake disc off, but did make note that new discs and
brake pads are probably 5k miles away or so. Caliper and hose looked good.

Drove the new races in, being extra careful to orient them properly. Packed the
bearings by hand with the requisite green MB grease, I have considered getting
one of those little hand bearing packers, but I don’t think I would use one
enough to justify the expense. Installed the inner bearing and then drove in
the seal. Flipped the hub over, but some grease it the hub then hung it on the
spindle. Installed the outer bearing and nut.

Got the magnetic base and dial indicator, tools I hadn’t used in easily 10
years. Both HF purchases from many moons ago.

Both literally fell apart in my hands. Grrr.

The faceplate on the magnet base just shattered, but it still worked. The dial
indicator bezel crumbled in my hands. This allowed the face/scale to just flop
around. OK, I’m thinking, I can still make this work…

And I did. It wasn’t pretty, but I was able to get everything set up and with
the dial indicator laying horizontal, the face could just lay on top and it
would register against the scale.

Sigh.

So I got the runout adjusted on the bearings and then tossed the dial
indicator. The magnetic base is still serviceable, so I kept it. Guess I’ll
have to buy another before my next W123/W126 front brake job.

Put the radio suppression spring in place, then fought the dust cap for a good
3-4 minutes before getting it driven on. It’s going to be a real pain to
remove, I suspect.

Took it for a test drive and not a wisp of noise. So much for the “tire with
the bad belt”.

So for the most part car stuff went OK. It was when the wife came home and
started grousing about the AC setback occurring too late and the house being
hot. I took a look as I knew it was running. 78F inside. Ouch! Warm air out
of vents. Hmm. Grab lines at condensor. Both are the same - pretty much
ambient. Darn it.

AC guy should be here shortly. I’m hoping for a bad compressor contactor.

Today will be little clean up stuff on the car. Tomorrow I think I’m going to
do the front timing cover seal and clean up/strip/repaint the valve cover.
Sunday I’ll do the front flex disc.

Our shower drain gets slow (clogs) a couple times a year. I make a slurry with
baking soda and water, pour that in and let it set a couple hours. Then mix up
some HOT liquid citric acid and pour that in, it fizzes like crazy for awhile,
then pull the strainer and reach in with a wire and the remaining hair just
falls off. Plug the drain from the top, fill the tub, pull the plug and blast
the drain with the plunger a couple times and its all clear.
Looking at it typed out it looks harder than it is, takes maybe half an hour of
actual effort plus a couple hours letting the baking soda sit.

Re: [MBZ] so much for rock auto

2017-03-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Even at -13F if the fuel is any kind of quality it shouldn't gel. I never use
any additives unless I'm having troubles.
I *think* one of the big problems with cold starts is people forget the rules,
glow a couple times, foot to the floor, crank until it starts or the battery
dies. If you stop cranking you lose all the ground you made (ie the cylinders
rapidly cool) and the next attempt is harder because the battery is tired.
Is the SDL a 617? -13F with no assist is pretty good for a 61x. I never found
out how cold it would have to been for a good 601 to start, I started them at
-15F with no real issues. Angie's Golf has a crappy glow plug design and
doesn't like sub zero temps. It'll start but you really need to work the glow
plugs.

I left the SDL with #1 boy so he could get to work while I drove his jeep back.
ND mornings are dang cold.  He said it was not happy, but did light off at
-13f after four glows.  Might have been winter diesel, but the oil was standard
15-50, and no additives to the tank to compensate for gelling.

We compost most of our food waste but the garbage disposal is sure handy for
"stuff" that falls off plates and out of pans and whatnot. It just means we

I think a dog and a compost pile makes for less maintenance than a

Insinkerator uses a neat system where the blades are fixed and the "stuff" gets

Re: [MBZ] Raspberry Pi Bluetooth + WIfI

2017-03-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I noticed the Amazon outage, apparently many of the websites I look at are
Amazon hosted.
It *shouldn't* affect a raspberry pi in your car since you wouldn't be likely
streaming stuff from the cloud to do it.
We have an idea at work that people will pay us to host their media "in the
cloud" so they don't have to own any storage on-site. I expect the actual way
we'll do it is to rent cloud space from Amazon. I can't imagine being one of
our customers in this kind of condition "Oh yeah, Amazon is down so you can't
work..."

That led to

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/01/aws_s3_outage/

which said, among other things,

Tuesday's Amazon Web Services mega-outage knocked offline not only
websites big and small, by yanking away their backend storage,
but also knackered apps and Internet of Things gadgets relying on
    the technology.

In fact, the five-hour breakdown was so bad, Amazon couldn't even
update its own AWS status dashboard: its red warning icons were
stranded, hosted on the broken-down side of the cloud.

        ...

Other IoT devices were also impacted and caused some rather
surreal scenarios for their owners. We're told that
cloud-connected lightbulbs, thermostats, and similar gear,
stopped working properly as their backends fell over.
