Those films are junk. They last maybe 5 years then begin to degrade. There
are massive cracks that appear, dirt gets in, the paint ends up junked. I am
not sure how the films get removed. Maybe a heat gun?

Allen was free. And I got lots of spare parts, or parts that had been removed
and are less than spectacular. At this point it is going to be a hodge podge
of upgraded parts, but a bit more complete when I get done.

Based on the work done on both Allen and Polei, I think a decent running car is
in the $3k range. And now, my w220 is valued at about that.

[MBZ] A dilema

2017-03-23 Thread clay via Mercedes
I have been getting Allen more presentable these past few weeks.

Today I installed the driver seat to replace the broke down one somebody
painted, with what looks now, to be house paint. The old seat functioned
electrically, just tried to swallow your back end.

I had to visit the PnP to source the nut that I cut the bolt from and scrounged
a few parts from the 560SEL that had donated the driver seat I want to install
in Polei. I got door pulls, the parcel shelf cover, a few check straps and
some other minor items. Oh, and the seals that protect the Gen II fog lamps.

I pulled a set of Gen II w126 headlights a few weeks back, forgetting that
Allen was Gen I and I wanted to fix the missing headlight door in this manner.
The Gen I fogs were not in the best of shape having a bit of rust at the
bottoms and cracks in the Bosch glass. I now see that the Gen I fogs are NLA.
There are Three (3) on all of fleabay.

Dilema. Do I put them on fleabay and try to help some poor soul keep his old
W126 from looking horrid, or should I just toss them in the scrap heap?

Re: [MBZ] W126 Weird Hose

2017-03-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
True.

I got a “hose mender” kit at FLAPS, but the 3/4” hose barb fitting was too
small in diameter. So off to my Ace hardware and there I found a nylon 3/4”
hose barb that was larger in diameter and fit perfectly. I as hoping to find a
brass hose barb but they didn’t have anything that big in brass. I’m not keen
about the nylon fitting as I have some concerns about temperature, so I’ll
leave it in temporarily and go hunting for a 3/4” brass hose barb fitting this
weekend.

No word on whether or not the hose is still available. Parts guy says Germany
shows it’s a good/active number, but the only way to be sure is to order one.
For now I’m not dropping $90 for a hose I don’t really need.

I do.  If I never hitched a trailer to it, my 1/2 ton would just
be enough - but it has the towing package and so has heavier
brakes and suspension.

As soon as the trailer is big enough to have more than one axle,
the heavy 3/4 ton is much better suited to the task.

One of 'em. It's chassis is a lot like a 1/2 gasoline.

I think there is a light and a heavy 3/4 ton - at least in '85.
The heavy 3/4 ton I have is more like a 1 ton.

It’s a weirdly molded hose with a bunch of strange turns in it.  It’s certainly
possible I could use bulk hose, but I would have to come up with an in-line
fitting (tee) where the little line comes off to feed the windshield plate
heater near one end.  I don’t think any of the bends in it are of such a short
radius that you couldn’t use straight hose, however.

Re: [MBZ] W126 Weird Hose

2017-03-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
It got compromised because the clamp I used to clamp it off perforated the
hose. I'm comfortable with the integrity of the hose itself.

I'm going to look for a metal or plastic sleeve for the repair. I'm not
terribly keen on the silicone tape thing, as a repair like this tends to fail
again when you least expect it.

Thanks, everyone. It's good to have some folks to bounce these things off of
for different viewpoints.

Re: [MBZ] Engine rebuilders [was: Re: Hey Kyle!]

2017-03-23 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Mike Elias at metric only does things one way, which is everything new to
factory spec. Literally everything gets replaced. He said my 617 cam was ok
so he gave me the old one to take home, but still put the new one in. New
oiler tubes. New prechambers. Rejected two heads before accepting the third
one I sent, due to little cracks when he magnafluxed them. He doesn't mess
around trying to cut corners. I tried to get him to put bigger valves in,
but he refused. He gave me all the old parts also.

I recall I had a line on a wagon head from texas being rebuilt there by a
dealer. Their machine shop machined the valve seats too deep and junked the
casting. Had a deposit down and everything. YMMV.

Re: [MBZ] W126 Weird Hose

2017-03-23 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Penny wise, pound foolish. Odds of durable patch are pretty much zero. High
chance of failure and overheating engine on freeway with attendant head
issues.

I like the cut and splice metal sleeve in idea. But it cracked for a
reason. I never really mind shelling out cash for oe hoses when needed,
because then I no longer have to think about that hose for a decade or
whatever. I think I destroyed one like that on the 617 at the back of the
head when the head came off; it looked fine but when I pulled on it to
remove, the inside of a bend came apart.. They all got replaced with hoses
from Tom Hanson. When you manilulate it to splice you may crack it again in
another spot, so be careful not to pull too hard on it.

Re: [MBZ] Teutonic twit

2017-03-23 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I used a dremel tool to cut off the bolt, in you situation.

I'm thinking about getting that Harbor Freight battery jump pack to use as a
power source at the pick-n-pull, so that I can get front seats.
