[MBZ] Go for the Gold

2017-05-04 Thread clay via Mercedes
Figured I may as well bite the bullet and see how much goodness I could bestow
upon Allen.

The hood pad arrived, so I had to get some 3M can of stick it up and stick that
thing up. I was pretty good about not coating myself and only had drips fall
onto the pad.

After much contemplation of just how to get some paint onto the car, I am going
to test Rustoleum. It has been what has been being used to put primer and rust
stop. The gold in a can does not look like it should work, but after playing
with the severely pitted under headlight bits, there was enough glaze and
primer that should the gold paint look stupid, I can start over on those pieces.

The weather was saying it was going to be in the low 70’s today, but a massive
thunder storm was going to show up this afternoon. With that on the schedule,
I decided to wet sand the car with 600 and 800 grit to be prepared in case I
get to paint.

[MBZ] Good Book

2017-05-04 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

All the Gallant Men by Donald Stratton with Ken Gire

It is the first book by a USS Arizona survivor

It is a new book. The Gummit welfare bookstore here got it in Dec, 16.

Written by one of the 5 remaining survivors last year.

Got pitchurs in it too, so gummit employees can comprehend some of it.

I had a good friend who was on Ford Island at the time. I never got
squat from him about the inferno, other than he told me he was Army and
on Ford Island.

Re: [MBZ] BAT

2017-05-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I paid $49 to list, which was a promotional price in April only. I think it’s
$99 now. At one time it was $250.

The high bidder pays a $250 minimum or 5% premium on the hammer price, and they
get charged as soon as the auction closes. So if my 300D closes at $7,000, for
example, the high bidder would be charged $350 when the hammer falls. Maximum
fee is $5,000 (5% of $100,000).

Note that to bid you must use a valid credit card, on which a hold is placed
for the amount of the buyer’s fee when you place a bid. So if you came in and
bid $6,000 right now you would have a hold on your card for $300 until the
auction ends.

Understand that BAT allows people to contact you privately throughout the
auction if they don’t want to ask questions in forum. As a result of this
there is a “hidden” aspect to the process that is only seen by myself and those

I suspect those who are staying in the shadows are waiting to bid at the end so

Yeah, I might do that although it's pretty clear in the auction copy that the
system is functional but not 100%.

My concern in getting too detailed is that some more discerning sellers might
want to start picking nits, and that just leads to ugliness. I don't have a
problem answering any questions posed as truthfully as possible. I pride myself
in being painfully honest in my descriptions so there are no questions on the
buyer's part. I've found that I'm typically far more critical than most, which
ends up making the buyer happier as their expectations might be lower.

I'm not going to get into tinkering with a virgin R12 system, as I don't have
the tools to do it. After several attempts I finally found an adapter that I
could use with my R134a gauge set to check the low side pressure. I had one
very old can of R12 on the shelf I used a piercing type can tapper to run it
into the system, which did bring the temperature down slightly and reduced the
bubbles in the sight glass.

Beyond that I'm not touching it. If I had decided to keep the car I would have
evacuated the system and replaced the R12 with "alternative" refrigerant and
left it at that.

The system is intact and not leaking from what I can tell. I suspect the drop
in refrigerant is due to the hoses becoming porous due to age, since these are
original and not barrier style hoses. This is the condition it was in when I
purchased the car.

Rather than do something that would render the system nonfunctional or require
additional repairs, I opted to leave well enough alone so the new owner has a
point of reference to work from.

If true, this part reveals a truly frightening scam:

At one point, he met a friend for breakfast and had what he thought at
the time was a panic attack, but what he now believes was a seizure
caused by low blood sugar. His friend brought him home first so
Terrance could take some anxiety medication. But that didn’t work, so
his friend brought him to the ER.

When they asked Terrance if he had suicidal thoughts, he answered
truthfully and plainly: of course he thought about suicide, but he
didn’t have any serious plans to do it. The personnel at the ER
reacted swiftly.

“They put me on a 72-hour psych hold and sent me to a psychiatric
hospital, which I’ll tell you is much worse than prison. They don’t
want you to leave,” Terrance told me. “If you have good insurance,
they want to keep you there. So after my 72-hour hold was up, they
asked me to commit myself voluntarily. And when I refused to do that,
they got a judge’s order to keep me locked up.”

Terrance felt he was being held against his will. So he came up with a
plan. “I told them I was calling my insurance company and canceling my
insurance.”

They released him immediately.

I think they're all like that. My $100 no-name version definitely is.
If you unscrew it completely, it extends to the safety stop, which does its job
by keeping it from flying apart, and now it's so long the screw doesn't reach
until you take the spring off it and retract it slightly.

medication. But that didn’t work, so his friend brought him to the ER.

When they asked Terrance if he had suicidal thoughts, he answered truthfully
and plainly: of course he thought about suicide, but he didn’t have any serious
plans to do it. The personnel at the ER reacted swiftly.

“They put me on a 72-hour psych hold and sent me to a psychiatric hospital,
which I’ll tell you is much worse than prison. They don’t want you to leave,”
Terrance told me. “If you have good insurance, they want to keep you there. So
after my 72-hour hold was up, they asked me to commit myself voluntarily. And
when I refused to do that, they got a judge’s order to keep me locked up.”

Terrance felt he was being held against his will. So he came up with a plan. “I
told them I was calling my insurance company and canceling my insurance.”

They released him immediately.

Re: [MBZ] Spring Compressor

2017-05-04 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I'm not sure what brand this thing is but it works fine enough except
that when it bottoms out it won't catch the screw. I found that out
when I removed a spring from the SD and let off the compression, it was
not quite enough travel so bottomed out and there was still some
compression, could not retighten it. Had to go to FLAPS and borrow
their strut compressors, the kind that go on the outside, and compress
the spring just enough to get the device out of the spring.

If you want to borrow it I guess i could send it along, it is heavy so
shipping both ways might be a lot.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew!

2017-05-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Ouch!

As I have stated previously, I learned my lesson years ago when I bought a 1971
VW Beetle convertible for $400 that became a "finish it or lose your ass"
project that cost me easily $10k. I figured it would cost me half that, which
I was prepared for. What I wasn't prepared for were the subcontracted costs
that I couldn't stop once the process began that went out of control.

At that time I was at a point of no return. To stop would have meant trying to
sell a partially restored car, a near impossibility with a huge loss. I had no
choice but to continue. Understand that this predated the Internet as we know
it today - this was the late 1980s, early 90s. No eBay or BAT to sell the car
to a highly focused group of enthusiasts.

Ever since that occurred I have always bought the very best example of the car
I could afford. It's far, far cheaper in the long run, believe me.

As for Kaleb's back forty, I just think he's a hoarder and his item of choice
is old Mercedes..

These are valid questions, for sure. I assume you can go to the next bidder in

I have to believe that BAT would ban anyone who knowingly backs out of a

Awesome, Dan! Let's hope the buyer pays up. What is BaT's policy for a
non-payer?

[MBZ] Mercedes 560 SEL 1987

2017-05-04 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I found a 1987 Mercedes 560 SEL with 167,900 miles on in Ann Arbor, MI. It has
the foot rests in the back!
Any thing in particular I should be looking for?

One spot of rust on left rear wheel well. Dark blue leather in pretty good
shape. Wood is mediocre and dash has a few cracks.
He's asking $3500.00.
What is a reasonable price?

thanks,
Mike

Re: [MBZ] Spring Compressor

2017-05-04 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Rick, there are copies that are "good enough", Floyd has one that I've borrowed
a couple times. MTC? I'm not sure of the brand. They cost about $100 new.
