Absolutely!

A complete basic install of Debian and a bunch of my gotta-have

than 5G. I did NOT install KDE or GNOME desktop - just XFCE.

Mechanical idle is set too low, and probably the signal from the crankshaft
position sensor is weak (usually the connection behind the engine is corroded,
but the sensor can go bad.

Mechanical idle speed adjustment is in the manual.

Re: [MBZ] Should I buy a ML350?

2017-08-17 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Here's my parts list so far:
Fender, Green Black Metallic U189 $200 plus a four hour round trip drive.
Headlamp, left, halogen $40 plus shipping
Condenser, $45 and it's only 25 miles away
Radiator, Hella/Behr, $150 small or $175 large from RockAuto.
Fog lamp, Hella, $50 RockAuto.

I've been seeing MLs for $1200-2500, but they all look like crap compared to
the unwrecked part of this 350, and most of them are 1998s and 1999s.
The only $2500 350 I've seen up here was a bit of a rust bucket.

[MBZ] 603 stalls when letting of pedal

2017-08-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I talked about this issue before with the SDL and thought I fixed it when I set
the timing but it's not fixed. If you give it throttle and let off quickly,
such as if driving slowing thru a parking lot and accelerating then have to let
off pedal quickly, it will die, or if at a stop sign and give it gas to move
forward and and let off it will do it. Sometimes it will not die not you see
the rpm drop way too low before idle takes over and it idles at correct speed.
It's almost like there is a delay in the idle control taking over. Anybody got
any ideas?

Re: [MBZ] OT replace Chromebook OS with Linux?

The question will be if you can get a linux version that will run on the
processor and can actually be installed but I'd guess the answer is yes. Google
it, somebody must have tried.
I'd say something like Puppy or Lubuntu, one of the lightweights. I have
Lubuntu on my 2006 Macbook Pro and although it takes a long time to boot (11
year old hardware) it runs okay. I want to try Puppy but its been having a hard
time with the video hardware and I haven't really had time to mess with it.
Your advantage is that the Chromebook should boot off USB while my Macbook
won't (32bit EFI with a 64bit processor, bad system.)

And even worse in snow or on ice.
Years back I had a set of Michelin tires that would not wear out - But
they got to where I could get stuck on a flat parking lot if it was
slippery.
I was at a local auto parts store and could not move forward or backward
as the lot was a bit uneven from it being warm and then turning cold.
Small bumps in the ice prevented me from moving as the tires just spun.
I finally replaced them for that reason.

So Max and I went to look at this car.

Good:
Interior pretty nice, some of the wood was coming loose
Original Becker radio, works
Dash good
Everything appears to be there
New battery
Started right up but idling very fast, maybe a missing return spring or
something, shut off fine so vac OK

Body straight, no visible dings
Respray at some point looked OK
Pretty clean

Not so good:
Pass door not closing well
AC belt missing so I guess NO ICE COLD
Respray at some point
Rust around side chrome trim
LR bottom of rear window rust hole, water in trunk
Rust at door bottoms
Rusty in front of pass wheel well under the hood in that flat area
Window rubber all dried and cracking
Engine bay needs a good cleaning but otherwise looked OK

I forgot to try the windows and other stuff
I didn't drive it to see how that might be
Spare looked like an original tire on a bundt

I offered the estate sales woman $1500, she was thinking $7k blahblah
million mile engine blahblah, she called the old guy and presented the
offer, he says he'll think about it and see if any others come in. He
didn't say hell no. If she gets back to me like Sat or Sun or something,
I'll go drive it and maybe offer $1200 for jerking me around and if there
is anything at issue with driving it. Car has apparently been sitting
awhile, so not been driven much. Other than the rust, it was a nice
looking car. If they get better offers then no problem for me.

I'm thinking If i can get it cheepcheep a BaT candidate with a bit of
detailing? Stupid money for it maybe? Quick flip?

Oooh, I didn't notice that. I did notice the big yellow blinking exclamation

Last time I was there, maybe 20 years ago, it was free mounting and rotation,
but you had to pay for balancing. At the time Wal-mart only charged for
balancing, if you bought the tire and paid for the balance, you got lifetime
road hazard from Wal-Mart. Not any more.

My Farm Bureau charges $2 stem, $5 dismount, $5 mount, $5 balance.
So, $17 or $12, depending on if the rim was bare.

My 2002 ML320 had an ugly repaint on the front foot or so of the LF fender. I
found a correct (silver) color one at a local wrecker within a week ($150) and

The ABS stuff is right behind that headlamp. Expect some electronics gremlins

At the moment, less than 1k.
But that can easily be 2k plus a fair bit of labor by the time I get it

I assumed it would be midnight blue like my wagon, but it's really green black

paint a fender. I'm surprised they call it Green Black, it doesn't look at all

Squirrels will do the same with food for winter. I had an older Ford LTD

That is why I decided to get the premiere a/s. They claim they stop just as
well when worn. Consumer Reports tested it and the premiere were as good or
better stopping on wet roads when it was 50% worn. Michelin claims that the
wet /rain grooves expand and therefore are better at dispersing water.

Isn't the issue with these million-mile tires that they are a really hard

And even worse in snow or on ice.
Years back I had a set of Michelin tires that would not wear out - But
they got to where I could get stuck on a flat parking lot if it was
slippery.
I was at a local auto parts store and could not move forward or backward
as the lot was a bit uneven from it being warm and then turning cold.
Small bumps in the ice prevented me from moving as the tires just spun.

I finally replaced them for that reason.

tells about the mailman taking a running start, hitting a long mudhole

trying to pull the milk truck out of the hold looked on.

Kid need to buy his own car and put skidplates on it.

I was surprised that it started up so quickly, sounded pretty good, but
that rust is a deal killer for me. I don't even think the BaT boys would
get too hot about that.

Windshield and backlight gaskets were severely dried and cracked and
probably leaking as well, so that would be another ordeal.

This car also has the evil Chrysler servo system for the HVAC, who knows if
that still functions. The coolant in the radiator looked nasty so I'm
guessing that servo is dead.

Never know unless you go look I guess. I was sort of tempted to ask about
the pressure washer and the air compressor, but resisted. Somebody snapped
up a Coleman camp stove, still in original cardboard box, just before we
got there. I probably would have offered $20 for that.

Good:
Interior pretty nice, some of the wood was coming loose
Original Becker radio, works
Dash good
Everything appears to be there
New battery
Started right up but idling very fast, maybe a missing return spring or
something, shut off fine so vac OK

Body straight, no visible dings
Respray at some point looked OK
Pretty clean

Not so good:
Pass door not closing well
AC belt missing so I guess NO ICE COLD
Respray at some point
Rust around side chrome trim
LR bottom of rear window rust hole, water in trunk
Rust at door bottoms
Rusty in front of pass wheel well under the hood in that flat area
Window rubber all dried and cracking
Engine bay needs a good cleaning but otherwise looked OK

I forgot to try the windows and other stuff
I didn't drive it to see how that might be
Spare looked like an original tire on a bundt

I offered the estate sales woman $1500, she was thinking $7k blahblah
million mile engine blahblah, she called the old guy and presented the
offer, he says he'll think about it and see if any others come in. He
didn't say hell no. If she gets back to me like Sat or Sun or

was a nice looking car. If they get better offers then no problem for me.

within a day's drive of Chucktown.

I bought grand daughter Defenders for her Honda Accord several years ago and
she's still driving on them; no problems.

How much does Walmart charge for mounting tires? I just paid a local shop $60
for mounting and balancing 4 tires. Disposal was included in the price.
Thanks,

Defender is going to be a lower speed rated tire. I know it is only appropriate
on older cars. Should not be used on anything 124 or newer. I will say I have
the premiers on my 97 e300 and they are great tires. Order from discount tire
direct though, should be cheaper than tire rack. If you don't have your own
tire machine and computer balancer like I do them them them to Walmart to get
mounted
