These new chargers won't do anything if the battery is below some certain

I am fascinated as to Amazon and the ways they mess with you when you put stuff
on a wish list. I’ve noticed that if I do this with Mobil1 after about two
weeks the price goes up to something stupid, like $50/jug and never comes back
down. I clear it out and whaddya know - it’s back at $22/jug in the
marketplace and I can choose it again.

Their algorithms are kooky at best. I list to put stuff on a wish list then
dump it a couple of weeks later, then put it in my cart, ignore it, delete it,
and put it back on a wish list. I figure that makes them think I’m unstable.

I have been a faithful customer of Autohaus AZ for a decade. Their prices
are usually below most, shipping is free on orders >$75, and I can always
reach them if necessary on their 800 number. The only downside is that
ground shipping from AZ invariably takes 5 business days (one week). I did
purchase from FCP Euro and Rock Auto recently to get OEM parts, and both
orders were trouble free.

So really the only thing the big wheel charger would be for is to boost
and jump start cars, otherwise the small HF unit will probably work,
which is better for cars that are not sitting in the shop. I am

[MBZ] Battery Chargers

2017-09-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I have my 5 or so year old Schumacher manual wheel charger that has 2
amp, 20 amp, 40 amp, and 225 amp start. I bought a smaller carry model
Schumacher fully automatic one a couple of years ago that worked fine.
I cant recall what amps it had but I think it was 2, 20, and 75. So a
couple of weeks ago it died so in looking for another one I came across
this from HF

https://www.harborfreight.com/2815-amp-automatic-microprocessor-controlled-battery-charger-63299.html

It charges at 2 or 8 amps, has recondition mode and is very small and
light weight. I tried it on the fully dead AGM battery that is in the
98 and it would not charge it, said it could not repair it or whatever.
I also tried it in regular charge mode and still no go. I tried it on a
pretty dead AGM in the R320 in repair mode and it charged it fine. Got
this one on coupon for $39

I decided I wanted a fully automatic bigger wheel charger so I bought
this one for $99 from Advance Auto Parts with 25% off online. When I
got it home first of all its missing several of the screws to assemble
it, but I will locate some here. Anyway, I did not pay attention before
I bought it but it only charges at 2 or 6 amps in auto mode. It also has
a timed 40 amp boost mode or 200 amp start. You are not supposed to
charge the battery in 40 amp, just use it to boost a low battery for a
short period of time. I figured this would charge at 20 amps auto, but
it does not so it will take hours to charge a battery. The only thing I
see that this does that the cheap HF one does not is the 40 amp boost
and 200 amp jump start. Otherwise isn't it pointless to have this big
wheel charger that actually charges at a lower rate on normal auto
charge than the cheap small HF unit?

So I tried charging the dead AGM battery with this one, which goes into
desulfication mode automatically if needed, and it would also not charge
the battery. Both this one and the HF I put it on the battery and came
back the next day to check them. I also tried this one on another
regular wet sell battery that is probably bad and it said it could not
desulficate (sp) it either.

I am used to throwing a battery on the manual charger at 20 amps for
about 30-60 minutes and the battery is pretty much charged. I wanted an
auto one because I have a bad habit of putting batteries on the manual
one for too long.

I also buy oil on Amazon. Interestingly my VW parts supplier, IDParts, is
cheaper than Amazon if I buy an oil change kit but more expensive if I just buy
a jug of oil.

Sorry you had a bad experience.

My parts providers for years in the following order:

Mercedes (dealer)
FCP Euro
Amazon
Rock Auto

Anyone else is a one-time best deal sort of thing.  I try to keep my money with
the same suppliers for the most part as it builds loyalty (to me) that can have
a lot of value if there’s a problem.  In many cases I’ll pay more when I buy
from my dealer, even with my jobber discount and tax, because it’s readily
available and there’s no question about quality.

After the dealer it’s FCP Euro, who is good, but not great.  They have a lot of
gaps in their offerings, which I find sort of weird.

Amazon is pretty good for name brand stuff like Lemförder, Bosch and Mann.  I
can even get Mobil 1 0W-40 in the five quart jug for less than WallWorld sells
it for, and they deliver it to my front door - that has value in time saved and
transportation.

I troll Rock Auto for name brand consumables like Mann, which I can often find
there for less than what I can get it for anywhere else, especially on their
closeouts.  I scored a set of brand new Sachs rear shocks for the W126 last
month on closeout - $15/each.  I don’t really need rear shocks, but for that
kind of money I couldn’t resist.

2 stories along a similar line -

Back some time in the early 70's I knew a fellow who had a brand new
Lincoln Town Car. Big boat but quite beautiful. All white inside and
out. Half vinyl roof and leather upholstery. He was travelling south
through Wisconsin in late February and a rock rolled down one of the
hills along the road and out into the road in front of him. I don't know
how big it was but he ran it over and took out the oil pan and the
transmission pan and banged up the differential. They wrote it off. I
only saw the car once. He had just got it.

Much more recently and not nearly so dramatic but last year in the late
fall I went to pick something up in a suburb north of us and when
returning home in the 08 Honda Civic, ran over something on the road. It
was dark and I don't know what it was but it made quite a noise when I
hit it. Metallic sound like something crunched and then rattled as it
came apart. I wondered if an alternator had fallen off a car or
something like that. It was dark and cold and there was a lot of traffic
behind me so I did not try to stop or to go back to look for whatever it
was. I drove the car the rest of the way home which would have been
another 15 or more miles at highway speeds and it did not appear to be
harmed in any way. The next day I jacked it up and looked under to see
if I could detect any damage. I could see a scratch on the right side
sort of subframe but no real dent in it etc., so I assumed I had dodged
a bullet of some sort and was happy it had not done any real damage.

I owned my last Corvette in 1960. It was a "chic magnet" that had no back
seat [if you can project that concept to conclusion.] This lack of
engineering impressed me in a number of other ways in the handling and
performance departments.
Sold it, never looked back

I see from this article, Corvette has not changed their engineering focus
and managed to continue to produce expensive plastic flower pots with no
mechanically redeeming qualities.

V.C. Summer owners accused of using doomed reactors as 'cash cow'Published:
Thursday, September 14, 2017

The latest in a string of lawsuits filed by ratepayers against SCANA Corp.
and Santee Cooper accuses the utilities of charging customers higher
monthly bills to pay for the construction of nuclear reactors even after
the project had become hopelessly inviable.

Some $1.7 billion was collected from ratepayers in South Carolina for the
V.C. Summer project, which was scrapped on July 31. Well before that date,
alleges the suit, the companies knew the reactors would never be built but
went on billing customers "fictitious costs" for a "fictitious project."

It also references a February 2016 report, commissioned by the utilities
and recently made public by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R), citing
basic insufficiencies with planning designs.

The suit is one of at least five brought in South Carolina courts against
either or both SCANA and Santee Cooper seeking class-action status on
behalf of hundreds of thousands of ratepayers (John Monk, Columbia [S.C.]
