not easy. Would not go with a car. I put a 4' 2x12 end to the rim with
the tractor several time. This was with 15" steel wheels (Dogde) I
would NOT try this with alloy wheels. they will get the edges all
scratched badly.

Amazingly clean. All the metal is bright, not a speck of rust anywhere,
almost no oil or crud on the undercarriage. Almost like it just came off
the line.

Noticed it has the original shock absorbers. It does seem to be sort of
“clunky” in front when you hit a big bump or railroad tracks, but all of
the front rubber and suspension is tight, uncracked or worn, and in place.
I suspect the suspension is rebounding a bit harshly since the shocks are
original. The front sway bar on that thing is HUGE!

Went shopping for a set of standard OE quality Bilsteins. Best deal after
the island of big women was FCP Euro at $67.00/each with free shipping.
The island of big women wanted $69/each with free shipping but I would have
to toss some baksheesh to Skeletor when they crossed the state line, so I
went with FCP Euro.

Rock Auto didn’t have them, unfortunately. They had Sachs/Boge, but I
prefer Bilstein and with FCP Euro I get a lifetime guarantee.

Not I.

I use Hylomar or Permagasket #2 non-hardening sealant. IMHO never, never, ever
use silicone sealant on anything that doesn't absolutely require it per the
manual. When it breaks free and clogs an oil passage, it's new engine time.

You push the wire bead into the reduced diameter area in the center of the rim
and then pry it off.
That part is easier if there isn't a tire attached to the beads.
And if all else fails, cut through the bead.

Break the bead free on both sides, cut through sidewalls for the entire
circumference close to the bead, cut off the tread / sidewall part so all
the is left is two rings of steel / rubber (beads) and then either pry
those off or cut them off with sawz-all.

Break the beads loose with a jack or something.
Then cut the tread loose from the beads with a pocket knife, just run it all
the way around the rim.
The beads shouldn't be too hard to pry over the rims with the tread off of them.

When I had to remove a tire from a rim and wanted to ensure the rim stayed
perfect, I found a you-tube video of a guy using a floor jack and a nylon
ratcheting strap to break the bead free to the inside of the rim. I did
that to break both sides free, then cut the tire off with sawz-all-of-doom.

Take your pick!

Why not just take them to the local tire store and slip one of the guys $20 to
knock them off the wheel for you. That’s what I do. The $20 more than covers

[MBZ] M119 Oil Pan

2018-01-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Anyone here dropped an oil pan on an M119? Just the lower cover, not the whole
pan.

Wife’s R129 has a stuck low oil level sender that I had to disconnect today so
it didn’t freak her out constantly. While this is really a froo-froo sort of
thing since it’s her car I feel better getting it replaced.

The lower cover on the pan has to come off so the oil level sender can come
out. I’m just wondering how bad the gaskets are on these and if I should
expect to use any sort of sealant.

Nope. Had everything in the air, yanked and hung on it, no movement. All of
the rubber and suspension links are in good shape and tight. it’s just the
noise of the suspension rebounding that I hear. It tracks well and has a good

The yellow one that I posted the link to is worth $3k, maybe $3.5k in this
market. I was hoping to snag it cheap since the roof wasn’t working because
the problem they had was a common one that’s simple to resolve. Lots of them
here with less than 100k on the clock and that don’t need tires like this one
does. It’s located in an area about an hour away that’s not easily accessible
from Tampa, which is also a ding.

I’m going to keep close tabs on it and see what happens, whether they relist at
a higher price (I hope they do!) or not. If they up the price they’ll kill the
deal in this market. And this isn’t the time of year people are looking for
convertibles around here, either….

I’m still waiting to hear about the W124 400E in Greenville SC but the seller
is AWOL. He’s an old dude who rarely uses his email, so it could be some time
before I hear from him, dang it.

That wouldn’t be too outrageous if it wasn’t for a few things:

1 - slushbox, not stick
Low mileage - good
Middle of winter - crappiest time of the year to be selling a convertible,
especially in the snow belt

That car down here would probably be around $7k-$8k, mainly due to the mileage.

The Studebaker Landcruiser, and the Hudson 4door, were the smoothest riding
cars of the late 40s and 50s. BIL bought new Studes regularly beginning with a
used pickup after WW-2. The last ones he bought were the sedan which had the
propeller on the front, and then a smaller Stude with a V-8 which was so fast
he sold it before his son began driving and bought a Chevy 4-door. I don't
remember what it was called.

2018-01-28 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
My Dad had a '56 silver hawk back when I was 7 or 8 yrs old. I think the
earlier ones are better looking than this one. He also owned a '59
Studebacker ½ton pickup with the V*8for about 40 years - it just kept on
truckin'.

[MBZ] Flex disk

2018-01-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I am doing a transmission fluid change, connector plug replacement, valve
spring upgrade, motor mounts and trans mount on the 98 e300. I have everything
done and was going to proceed with trans mount, and looked at flex disk which
looks ok but does have some small cracks visible around the bolt holes. I think
I am going to hold off on the mount and do the flex disk at the same time. It
does not appear to be in danger of failing, but my assumption is that if you
see small cracks starting it should be replaced. Do you agree?

I still need to pull the manifold and do the deliver valve seals. I have all
the parts for that but not sure I want to tackle it today.

How many cars since the 1960's Firebird convertible have damper weights on the
chassis?

The final frame-related things Wichman and I talked about were the Active Tuned
Mass Modules, ATMMs, which are essentially little cans bolted to the frame
rails on either side of the truck, with solenoid-activated weights inside.

In defense of the buying fool, the XKE is a very unique body style.
Some would say sensuous. Coupled with a reliable drive train, Bosch

appealing to some. The questions is: When it is finished, will some
celeb fool pay 100k for it?

Good point about the 7.62.
It's not the .308" bullet diameter of our 7.62x51 ammo, it's properly .310".
Therefore it pays to know whether your barrel is intended for .310 or .308
ammo.
