The local hose shop has bins out front of garden hoses they make up out of
good black USA rubber name brand hose, and machined brass fittings.
Solid.  We've had a set for at least ten years, they don't look worn at
all.  They _are_ heavy, no doubt, and not particularly cheap.
Per-service-year, though, they're a screaming bargain.  They live on a
metal wheeled hose reel we got at Costco, also extremely solid.  (Haven't
seen those reels for sale for years, though.)

When we had a chewing dog it would go for the vinyl hoses from time to
time.  It never exhibited even the slightest interest in the rubber hoses.

they can never repay.  It's important to keep them stupid so they don't figure 
out the plot.  In the future, these drones will be loyal to whoever promises 
(but never delivers) relief on these debts.  Debts, by the way, that can't be 
discharged through bankruptcy.

I was not entertained when SWMBA stated that the child should accept the 
usurious loan offered, so that he had some skin in the game.  Maybe, if he had 
the ability to succeed all four years and come out  needing only that pittance, 
but I suspect there would be more “loans” tossed on each year.  Better that the 
kid work his butt off of a Summer or maybe for a year to have money to INVEST 
in his education, not just get some non dischargeable loan.

gentler place for the “life experience”.

I was aghast at the massive plastering of all manner of “snowflake” posters on 
any vertical surface.  From hurt feeling issues, to some actual violence, 
issues, but mostly fear engendering propaganda for all the “support” services 
on offer.

This, coupled with the inability of the students to read and obey the posted 
regulations made me want to jump up and smack some sense into the kids.  There 
were permanent signage on the central square that bikes should be walked and no 
skateboards.  Seems simple enough.  The idiot kids were blasting through the 
wandering children whose noses were suctioned to the phones in their paws.  

To top it off, all manner of gender confused or militant genderists would look 
at me with abject disgust and snarling because I dared to accompany my male 
child into their magical safe spaces where he might continue the malign 
patriarchy is he pursued a technical degree that did not save an endangered 
ecosystem or right a perceived slight where there never was.  Or, he or I might 
consume some form of non-locovore, PETA unsanctioned, gluten infused, white 
guilt nummies.  

Then I had to bite my tongue as SWMBA had a hissy fit that youngest child did 
not want to share his insights with her, and she was certain I had poisoned his 
mind against higher learning in an attempt to undermine her.  All I had done 
was to give the kid the form so he could register for Selective Service, which 
would allow the financial aid folks to disburse funding should he avail himself 
of their dollars.

Yes the point of no turning back probably varies with the relative weights
of tow vehicle, trailed load, trailer length yada yada. You arent going to
necessarily know where the point is or that you are approaching it when you
swerve for the pothole. Providing some buffer is what all the trailer
loading recs are aimed at I think.

Trailer brakes firmly applied at onset of oscillation "can" dampen them
enough to make an immediate stop and save further damage. in some
instances.

As this excellent video shows, the amplitude of the initial oscillation
strongly impacts both the frequency and amplitude of the out of balance and
how it is translated to the rear of the tow vehicle.

Trailer rule #1: Load carefully, drive slowly, avoid sudden direction
changes.

with the 450 M117 engine. It has manual climate control - no ACC type II to
worry with, power should be about the same as a 560SL, if it runs, what's

I'm bookmarking it. 
It appears that a large disturbance gains rapidly in amplitude, but a smaller 
(but still pretty serious) one still self-damps at the test speed shown. 
I'm still thinking that if it starts from going too fast in a straight line you 
should usually be able to stop it just by slowing down. But perhaps if it 
starts by sudden swerving or changing lanes, you might induce enough sway to 
not be able to get out of it by simply removing energy from the entire system 
by slowing down?

Lowe's has some hoses that are lifetime warranty, Grey with lines 
on them I think. No 1 daughter bought one a couple of years ago 
and a few months ago when the dogs made a playtoy of it Lowe's 
replaced it without question. Might take a look at them.

We bought two of these after going through too many hoses over the years.
We have over an acre, and SWMBO has plantings all over the place, hence the
100'. They also work well for washing the plane.
One leaked at a fitting when new, but was pleasantly easy to exchange for
another one. We've had them three of four years now, and still like them. I
don't know if they come in 50'.

[MBZ] Furrin Car Suspension Fun

This afternoon I addressed a nagging clunk from the front suspension of
SWMBO's Infiniti I30.  I suspected the links at the ends of the sway bar,
and so I'd purchased a set earlier, something like $25 for the set.  The
links connect to the end of the sway bar with a bolt through a couple
rubber bushings compressed between some big dish washers, and the old
rubber bits looked pretty tired.  The other end of the link is a ball joint
that connects to the lower control arm.  The whole thing is way too
complicated in my opinion, but the parts are cheap enough and not too hard
to replace.

"While I was there" I also checked the ball joint play between the lower
control arm and the wheel carrier, which is very similar to the 124 set
up.  The FSM calls for measuring the play with a dial indicator and the
acceptable amount of play is "0 mm".  I measured 0.1 mm on both sides, and
one side is pretty new with only about 10k miles.  I think I'll live with
it for now.  The boots are intact and after I replace the sway bar links
all the noise was gone.

You can lower the diff out of the way, the mounts are pretty high, no need to 
remove driveshaft, etc.  Cannot remove and replace them with the diff in normal 
position, no clearance.  Only needs to come down a couple inches I think.

Main problem is that the mounts are stuck to the point the puller won't work, 
hence using an air chisel to collapse the ring.  The subframe is heavy sheet 
metal, you dont' want to warp it.

[MBZ] Today's 400E Fun - Mirror Boots!

Got a good set of used mirror boots.  Took the mirrors off, cleaned everything 
up, soaked the new (used) boots in a bucket of hot water to soften them up and 
got them installed.  Slathered both with lots and lots of 303 to protect them.  
The old ones were so bad I had to literally chip them off the mirrors in pieces.

Pics to follow on the blog tonight.  I may hold off until tomorrow, as I’m 
seriously considering regluing the headliner tomorrow.  Hmm.

W124 buddy of mine says the tool allows you to do them in-frame without having 
to drop the diff.  Hmm.

I’m going to continue to research this.

These aren’t to the point where it’s making noise, but the left one is pretty 
worn out.  The bolt is way off center but not touching the sleeve - yet.  Right 
side isn’t quite as bad.

I did that in a Ford Escort wagon and a trailer with a load of bricks.  Didn’t 
have the bricks properly loaded over the trailer’s axle and when I got up to 
speed on the interstate the trailer started to fishtail, broke loose and spun 
me around in a complete 360, ending up on the left side of the road in the 
median facing the right way.

As I broke loose and was just a passenger an old couple was passing me on the 
left in an Oldsmobile.  To this day I can recall the look of horror on their 
faces.

I did not soil myself, miraculously, but I did lose a couple of years off my 
life, I believe.

speed goes from 60 up to 70. Right at the 70 zone I start getting up to speed

may have had the car loaded backward, as in, the rear of the car facing 
forward. Anyway, as I am passing him he decides to speed up. I hear him 
downshift as he is speeding up. Right as I get past him I see his load start to 
sway back and forth. By this time I’m going about 75 and I estimate him at 
around. I watch in the mirror as he loses control of his trailer. Next thing I

he comes to a complete stop facing the wrong direction but oriented across both

the steel rings in and up from the rear, collapsing them.  They press in from 
the FRONT, do not attempt to push them out the back  The old ones will be 
very stuck, which is why he recommends collapsing them.   

New ones can be drawn in with a bolt, some washers, and a big socket.

Diff can be unbolted and lowered while doing the job, replace the front rubber 
mounts as well.

I need to do this on the wagon, it bangs a lot on shifts.  Much less now that 
the brakes don't drag in the rear, but still noisy.

I can borrow the tool from someone, so that’s half of the battle.  The OE 
mounts are cheap, too.

I’m just not sure how serious of a job it is - I really don’t like the idea of 
having to drop the diff, as in disconnecting the flex disc and all that.

I gotta look in the FSM and see what they say about it.

I’ve got hose bibs on three sides of my house.  I don’t like moving hoses 
around, so I have 50’ hoses on two of them (opposite sides of the house).  This 
is more than adequate for about 99% of the hose needs.

I don’t want to have to deal with a big pile of garden hose that never moves, 
as would be the case if I went with 100’ length.

I would also add that I want to buy something high quality that won’t 
disintegrate in the Floriduh sun and heat.  HF stuff will break down in a year 
or two from the UV exposure alone, I would expect.

[MBZ] OT - Garden Hose Recommendations

I am trying to find a 3/4” 50’ long garden hose that isn’t one of those stupid 
“expandable” hoses and is fairly heavy duty.  My Crapsman hoses of nearly 25 
years have finally succumbed to the environment here in Floriduh, so I need to 
find some replacements.  Looking around I am overwhelmed at the choices, none 
of them terribly impressive to me.

as they seem to minimize any leakage through the valve stems.  Never had a

I bought Genuine Mercedes Benz Valve Caps.  They felt very light and 
cheaply made.  I thought they were aluminum but they turned out to be plastic.  
All four caps were frozen with the white pitting.  I am curious and may call 
Mercedes directly.


Any ideas for a good replacement?  My daughter loves her Mercedes and I 
promised her a good fix!

There are tools that have taps for the thread on the inside of the valve
stem and dies for the thread on the outside of the valve stem. They are
inexpensive.

Weird!  Never had that happen.

I'd just put some light oil on the threads and be done, next time the tires are 
replaced make sure new stems are installed.

If you know where the current tires were installed, you could ask that shop 
what the deal was, maybe they will replace the stems for you.

[MBZ] Genuine Mercedes Benz Tire Valve Stem Caps Issue

Hi all,


I  purchased genuine Mercedes Benz logo tire valve stem covers last year for my 
daughter's MB 2011 300C.  Went to check the tire pressure because she received 
a warning message and  all 4 of the caps were basically sealed to the valve 
stem.  I had to force them off with a pair of pliers and the plastic broke (yes 
they are made of plastic).  There is a white powdery pitting on the threads 
that I lightly wire brushed off.  Still not not perfect but I was able to 
carefully force on the original metal caps I had taken off.  


First time I every experienced that issue and wanted to reach out to see if 
others had too.  Any suggestions on what the issue could be along with ideas on 
how to clean the threads would be appreciated.  Along with thoughts on what to 
purchase for replacements.

If you plan on buying Malwarebytes for PC's, best to buy the disc at Walmart 
since, if M/B has your credit card number, they will keep renewing it without 
your permission every year thereafter until your credit card is updated, unless 
you get the CC card company to cancel payment; which is sometimes difficult.
