[MBZ] OT: Trucks

2018-05-01 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Today I procured a potential donor, or at least a temporary (?) fill-in.
$1450 for the 1996 V10 4x4 extended cab long-bed. Same basic truck as
mine, but with a V10 and an automatic. Rattly POS at this point, with a
weak tranny. Still, don't need it to be much, except intact where it
counts and able to haul itself to surgery, while hauling some things around
for us until then. About $2150 down the road, with some used tires that
are actually round.

I suspect that the tranny's problem is that it starts in 2, and only goes
to 3. Hey, it drives.

The rationale behind using relays is to reduce voltage drop to the lamps by
using a much larger gauge wire directly to the lamp (through a relay to handle
the higher current) from the power source, e.g., the B+ terminal on the
alternator or battery terminal. The stock wiring can introduce enough
resistance to cause a 1-2 volt drop, giving the lamp less than 12 volts at the
terminals. Dan Stern’s web site spells all this out in painful detail, but if
I recall, a drop in one volt from the design operating voltage can cause a
significant reduction in light output.

The problem with the H4 lamps is that they have a much smaller surface area for
the connector, so if there is the slightest amount of corrosion the resistance
across the connector creates heat and melts the connector body.

I have no idea if that applies to this particular situation but I know from

2018-05-01 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
This is what my loader looks like when off the tractor:
http://kioti.dyndns.org/kl451.jpg

The hydraulic lines have quick couplers. The only mechanical fastener is one
big pin on each side (in the brackets on the left) that locks the loader
brackets into the towers on the mount. Removal was surprisingly easy.
Remounting requires driving back to the loader so the mount towers and loader
bracket align and reconnecting hydraulics. Then curling down to rotate the
bracket into place and installing those big pins.

Those legs (which telescope in and get pinned to the bottom of the boom) are
key to removal and installation. Curling the bucket causes the whole loader to
pivot in or out of the mount towers. You can see I lost one of the feet.

It sounds like your setup is more cumbersome.

I had to remove the loader to fix the injection pump (broken gear teeth on a
control sleeve). The IP is an inline jerk pump, somewhat like my 300 SD
(Mercedes content).

The nice thing about Holiday Inn now is they've got both Intercontinental and
Kimpton under their umbrella. Last year I did a week in Miami (well Doral
but...) at an Intercontinental. It was $20 more a night than a Holiday Inn but
the customer wanted me to work a Sunday and it was the week before Christmas...
Angie and I used Holiday Inn points to stay at the Intercontinental Chicago a
couple years ago for our anniversary.

In June we're going to the International Coleman Collectors Convention in
Huntsville, Alabama. It was half price to fly into Nashville so we're going to
spend a day/night there at a Kimpton for free on points.
The car for the week is free too, a benefit of corporate travel.

[MBZ] Battery

2018-05-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Spousal unit said her SL500 wasn’t happy about cranking tonight when she was
done filling it up at the gas station. I had previously gone through the
charging system when the car was out of service a few months ago while she was
recovering from surgery. I knew a battery was in its future, but the NAPA
battery that was in it seemed happy after a healthy charge.

Initially I was going to have her swing by the dealer tomorrow and have them
drop a new MB battery in, but I had some concerns as to whether or not the
battery would start the car again, even after charging all night.

I checked my local Advance Auto and ended up using a $10 coupon and a 25% off
promo code (Mitch would be proud of me) to buy an Autocraft Gold battery out
the door for $131.00 with a 3 year free replacement warranty. I would have
gone AGM for another $30, but they didn’t have a Group 49 AGM in stock. Got in
the door five minutes before they closed.

Spent all of maybe 10 minutes swapping the batteries out (I had a spare I was
able to take for the core) and resetting the windows and such. Done and ready
to go.

Our corporate is Holiday Inn which is mostly what I use, I'm Spire Elite with

stay in Hiltons for airport hotels when returning home from LA. The Hampton Inn

Re: [MBZ] headlamp connector melted

2018-05-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The rationale behind using relays is to reduce voltage drop to the lamps by
using a much larger gauge wire directly to the lamp (through a relay to handle
the higher current) from the power source, e.g., the B+ terminal on the
alternator or battery terminal. The stock wiring can introduce enough
resistance to cause a 1-2 volt drop, giving the lamp less than 12 volts at the
terminals. Dan Stern’s web site spells all this out in painful detail, but if
I recall, a drop in one volt from the design operating voltage can cause a
significant reduction in light output.

The problem with the H4 lamps is that they have a much smaller surface area for
the connector, so if there is the slightest amount of corrosion the resistance
across the connector creates heat and melts the connector body.

corrected during a military exercise with a select group of Mosad, many
years ago.. who explained it as:
"Taking a dump on your neighbors front porch, at 2:00 AM... then banging on
the door, and when the neighbor comes to the door.. DEMANDING he provide
toilet paper

They then demonstrated the practical application of Chutzpah in the
mission, which earned my lasting respect.

This took Chutzpah... We knew it.. They did it.. Now can we get a
refund on the billions in cash that was delivered to them?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Thorium Reactor

2018-05-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Interesting that Thorium may be making a comeback in consideration.

As it happens, I am currently reading a book which was written in 2012 by
Richard Martin called "Super Fuel" "Thorium, the green energy source for
the future".

In the introduction chapters it talks to how post WW2 Thorium was given a
look, a pilot plant was built, [government funding, of course] then
canceled because it did not produce weapons grade material for more bomb
making.. [cold war era government think prevailed]. Thus, Thorium was put
of not just the back burner, but what was learned was destroyed..[more
government think].

So, very interesting to find there may be a new look being taken at Thorium
as a power generation source, without the down side side effects of left
over radiation products...

Disposal issues from all the worlds nuke plants now present a problem set
with no viable solution... One proposal was to dump it all in the Marianas
Trench... out of sight, out of mind?

Re: [MBZ] Is anybody in here?

2018-05-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The loader on my machine is homemade. The worst thing is that the pins are
actually bolts. Whoever machined the grease paths in the bolts did a good job
but it was hard getting everything straight to take apart.

I have a sneaking suspicion theres a little twist in the frame which made it
hard to align all the bits. Actually now that I think of it the fact that the
bucket won't sit flat on the floor is probably part of the problem... Once I
get the hydraulics sorted reworking the bucket is on the short list. The curl
cylinder is setup all wrong so you can actually swing the bucket so far down it
can't pull it back up...

On mine. You raise the loader, extend the loader stands, lower the loader until
the stands touch the ground, and curl down until the lip of the bucket touches
the ground.  Then pull the two bug pins, put the boom in float, and curl up
until the loader posts clear the mount (and front wheels).  Finally, disconnect
the hydraulic quick connectors and back the tractor away from the loader.  It
was not hard. IMO.  Putting the loader back on is harder.  To the extent
possible, do this on a hard flat surface and put plywood (or something) under
the legs so they don't sink into the dirt.

[MBZ] Austin TX trip

2018-05-01 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Just got back from Austin, TX trip driving the 85 300D It performed flawlessly
and was a very comfortable and enjoyable trip. It took me about 23 hours each
way with a 3 hour nap in the middle. Interestingly my MPG was better on the
way down than on the way back. Probably due to a trailing wind on the way down
and a head wing on the way back. Also, I was driving an average of about 5
miles per hour faster on the way back.

Spent the week helping my daughter around the house and property. She is
leasing a 2.5 acre lot and is operating a Musicians Hostel. She has one home,
one studio, 3 small out buildings, 3 travel trailers, a large garden and about
a dozen chickens on the property. All of this in the north end of the city.
It is quite the setup! She has 4 long term guests as well as several others
that only stay a couple of days or a week at a time. Not something I would
enjoy, but to each their own.

This daughter is the one who loves the older Mercedes. She drove my hand me
downs over the years. A 1973 220D and a 1981 300TD. The 220 was crashed into
and rusted away. The 300TD rusted away and is currently donating
parts(including engine and transmission) to an 85 300TD that will be ready to
drive in a month or so. Her favorite and mine was the 220D. She is currently
driving a 1990 Chevy conversion van who’s body is showing its age. The engine
is the reliable 350 V8 with about 180,000 miles on and going strong.

I’m not sure if the HD sockets from NAPA are ceramic, but they are rated for
high current/temperatures. I think they were some sort of phenolic material.

That has poor reviews.

Dan mentioned that NAPA has some ceramic sockets; if you are in a hurry,
you might look there.

Daniel Stern used to say that overwattage 9000 series bulbs were beyond stupid
because the contacts were marginal at best with 55-60W bulbs.
If only somebody could come up with an LED that matched the geometry of
filament bulbs...

driving the 91 560SEC the other night, LF light was too dim to see much,
RF working but not real bright.  Looks like the LF plastic connector is
melted, swapped the bulb holder to RF and it got light, but that plastic
connector is looking a bit hot and burned too.  Trying to find some
replacement connectors, the RF looks like a new one was spliced in at

Re: [MBZ] Engine That Uses Gas and Diesel

2018-05-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Actually this sounds very straight forward, just a matter of timing the two
fuel ignition events. Figuring out all the emissions stuff, and the added
expense of two fuel systems instead of one, THAT may be the deal killer.

I'd like to know what real-world fuel consumption would be.

Funny thing is, the photo is of a 606.962, not the 96 NA motor.

I see those in ebay usually listed for 2500. Craigslist usually has turbo
motors out of 1998-99 w210 wrecks for about a grand.

That 606 is a turbo. There is no crossover air pipe, the exhaust manifold
is turbo, and you can see the turbo in the photo. It is from a 98 or 99.
