Thanks for that observation. Maybe grinding the bulb holder is the better approach. That would keep it oriented properly. The socket connector is oriented a certain way so that is an indication of how it should go. White lithium grease quickly turns to the rock for which it is named. It should join the pantheon of frequently mis-applied and thus ultimately harmful yet inexplicably popular products, alongside Armor-all and WD40. (All of which probably have their place.) IMHO, plain bulbs are superior. None of this blue crap 'upgrade'. The bulbs and holders are keyed, so that the light originates from exactly the right place within the reflector. With two filaments to consider, the geometry really _is_ that tight. I would not butcher the headlamps, I'd grind a bulb before I did that. But if you do, expect it to not work correctly, maybe have an incorrect low-beam cutoff and blind oncoming drivers. If you wanted to do that, get a newer vehicle with HID headlamps. -- Jim On Sat, Jun 16, 2018 at 3:30 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > This is weird. [MBZ] 91 SEC headlights bulb weirdness
This is weird. I ordered some new bulb socket connectors, supposedly ceramic, for the SEC since both of the old ones had melted. Got those soldered on no problem. Go to put the bulbs back in the headlamp housing and they won't go in right. I'm sure they were in there OK when I took them out (turns out I didn't have to, should have left well enough alone...). The bulb holders have 3 little slots on them and the left side housing has 3 little tabs (one is missing but that's OK), 2 of the three look to be slightly bigger than the other one as do the slots on the holders. The right side seems to have 4 tabs in the housing and of course the bulb holder will not go in there. All the replacements seem to have 3 slots, which the ones that I have do, but I absolutely cannot get them to go in and seat over those little tabs. This is really weird, the bulbs/holders should just slide right in then the round holder thing goes over the bulb holder, 3 tabs go into slots and then you rotate the holder to tighten it down. Without the bulb holder fully seating this thing won't go into the slots so it can be turned to tighten it and hold the bulb in. I have no idea what to do here other than just grind off the tabs in the headlamp backing that the bulbs go into, they don't seem to be absolutely necessary, they just keep the bulb in sorta the right orientation though I'm not sure that makes a big difference to anything. Looking at new bulbs, here is another thing too. A single bulb Amazon Prime is $10.35 and a two pack is $31.96. I could buy 3 singles for the price of two. [MBZ] a disappointing day
So I spent most of the day working on the 190D. I did a full conversion to R134 including new expansion valve, all o rings replaced, drier replaced, oil changed to ester, also pulled the blower motor and cleaned out a rats nest that was built back behind the fan and evaporator. No idea how they got in there. Put it all back together, pulled a vacuum and ran leak test on the ac machine, it passed. I then charged with R134 and the 201 chassis seems to convert well to R134 as it cooled pretty darn good at idle in the 95 degree heat today. I noticed all the sudden the oil pressure gauge is dead, shows 0 even when wire is unplugged from the sending unit. I guess I will have to swap the gauge out. So as I was finishing it up for the day I shut the car down and hear a hiss. Not the normal hiss you might here when you shut it down with the high and low side equalizing. It was louder. It seemed to be coming from down low. Then I saw it, a big bubble in the high side hose from the condenser to the compressor. Crap. I pulled the car back into the shop to go ahead and recover the system before it all leaked out and I keep getting a high pressure error on my machine. I need to look into that and hopefully its not a major deal. So anyway, looks like Im going to have to replace the manifold hoses. I wonder if its cheaper to order a new set or have these rebuilt? Anybody BTDT? I was hoping to have this car ready to start driving next week. --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. https://www.avg.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Kaleb. If the squeak is caused by the bearing turning in its' housing you are probably out of luck. i.e. The motor shaft and the bearing turn together.
