This is a freshly refinished cover. Checked for wracking and out of level, as well as having any exterior scuffing repaired. There was no indication of escaping oil on the cover, just below the gasket. clay monroe redgh...@comcast.net > On Aug 11, 2018, at 1:04 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes > wrote: > > Unless there is a hairline crack in the valve cover itself, which happened > to me once. > > On Sat, Aug 11, 2018 at 7:59 AM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes < > mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > >> How did you set the gasket? Re: [MBZ] Up comes a Bubblin' crude
I have now installed a fresh gasket and made sure everything is scrupulously clean, all obstructions out of the way. Fitted the gasket fully to the dry cover to make sure it did not try to escape. The leak was not slowed. Probably due to not getting it torqued down “Just Enough”. Once the engine cooled enough, I cleaned it up, once more, and gave the nuts a squeak more pressure. That seems to have reduced the flow. I may get to “extend” my oil change, as there is pretty near all new oil in the crank case. Must have leaked out and replaced a few gallons over the past number of days while driving. clay monroe redgh...@comcast.net > On Aug 11, 2018, at 4:59 AM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes > wrote: > > How did you set the gasket? If it's like most of them the seat was never unfolded, so the seat, if not the rest of the rear interior, should be in the same condition as the advertising photo car. Re: [MBZ] Up comes a Bubblin' crude
How did you set the gasket? This critical, it's not just pop it on the cover and screw it down! Best practice is to make sure the gasket is fitted to the cover all the way around, clean and dry. Head must also be clean and dry. Thump the cover firmly agains the head five or six times with the gasket in place -- the cover must fit into the slot in the gasket all the way down all the way around, you can usually tell by the change in sound when it's seated. Then tighten the screws GENTLY -- more than finger tight, but not more than 20 ft/lbs I think. Too tight and the cover warps and lifts up between the screws and leaks. I can't think of anything else that would leak all over the engine on a 617.
