The Royal Purple and the Castrol lawsuits seemed to have opened up the naming controversies about synthetic. Marshall Booth investigated the synthetic oil business early on and found that Mobil was the only synthetic oil manufacturer worldwide. All other oil companies advertising synthetic were buying synthetic oil from Mobil. As a result the advertising claims of other oil companies became muddled. Here is an abstract of the report of the Castrol lawsuit: "A Defining Moment For Synthetics By Katherine Bui published October 1999 Lubricants World While the field is not wide open, a new ruling confirms that the definition of "synthetic" is still largely in the hands of marketers. Part 1 of 2 Synthetic. The word has become almost a proscription in the industry, especially among scientific and technical organizations, such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Petroleum Institute (API). Ask a marketer of motor oil products formulated with hydroprocessed mineral oils, and you might get a definition that involves cost-efficiencies and consumer choices. Ask an engineer involved in manufacturing polyalphaolefins (PAOs) or esters, and composition might be the determining factor. Despite the intense debate over the origins of synthetics, an absolute definition has remained in limbo for many years, with much of the responsibility placed on base oil manufacturers and lubricant marketers. It was only recently, in a decision by the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, that the first basic action and ruling in the United States set a strong precedence for a broader description in the marketing of synthetics. In this first installment of a two-part story, Lubricants World takes a look at the NAD's ruling and explores the revived debate surrounding the definition of "synthetic." The Ruling In a ruling released April 1999, the NAD addressed complaints filed by Mobil Oil Corp. regarding the truthfulness of Castrol North America Inc.'s claim that its Syntec® provides "superior engine protection" to all other motor oils, both synthetic and conventional, and that Syntec's esters provide "unique molecular bonding." Mobil charged that the advertisements inaccurately represented that the current formulation of Syntec is synthetic. The challenge was filed based on statements Castrol made in a series of television commercials, Web site publications, package labels, and brochures. The NAD divided its decision to address three issues raised in the complaint. Is the reformulated Syntec synthetic motor oil? Has Castrol substantiated its superiority claims? Has Syntec been degraded? Synthetic? The NAD determined that the evidence presented by the advertiser constitutes a reasonable basis for the claim that Castrol Syntec, as currently formulated, is a synthetic motor oil. NAD noted that Mobil markets hydroisomerized basestocks as synthetic in Europe and elsewhere. NAD noted that the action taken by the SAE to delete any reference to "synthetic" in its description of basestocks in section J354 and API's consequent removal of any mention of "synthetic" in API1509 were decisions by the industry not to restrict use of the term "synthetic" to the definition now proffered by Mobil. Further, the SAE Automotive Lubricants Reference Book, an extensively peer-reviewed publication, states base oils made through the processes used to create Shell's hydroisomerized basestock, severe cracking, and reforming processes may be marketed as "synthetic." Superior? Despite its prior ruling, the NAD advised that Syntec could not advertise a superior protection claim. Degraded? The NAD determined that though Mobil presented clear evidence that Castrol has made a major change to Syntec's formulation, it was not sufficient to demonstrate that Syntec has been "degraded."snip http://www.1st-in-synthetics.com/a_defining_moment_for_synthetics.htm --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. https://www.avg.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery

I started using Valvoline synthetic in my pickup. At around 6,000 miles into a change the engine started to get a little shudder like a miss at idle, change the oil and it went away. Also had a little lifter tick that went away on fresh oil. A couple months ago I switched to M1, the tick is much quieter, I'm only about 2,000 miles into the experiment so we'll see. -Curt On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, 5:01:56 PM EDT, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: So, what is the current feeling about oil? From a meterologist on another email list: -- There is absolutely no truth to anything in this article. None. Participating in the spreading of this fake climate hysteria is inexcusable for anyone who calls himself a scientist or has training in atmospheric science such as Kevin Trenberth as there is no metric that can be used to distinguish any of these hurricanes in the present to anything in the past that proves atmospheric CO2 is the cause of any of it. It is no wonder that so many have lost all respect for those that participate in spreading fake, untrue and unprovable claims about severe weather, tying it to "climate change" whose definition has been expanded by these kooks to include anything they choose to spread another story full of hysteria and falsehoods. Mr. Trenberth, I don't know how you sleep at night. It looks as though you have no conscience with respect to maintaining the truth. Harvey's atmospheric characteristics were no different than many other hurricanes of the past and there is no metric you can use that proved otherwise. Harvey's flooding rains were caused by the storm being synoptically slowed as it made landfall by surrounding weather systems which as anyone knows is a normal occurance given the limitless combinations of weather patterns that are produced continuously by the chaotic atmospheric system that we well understand that produces our daily weather. When a tropical system slows or stalls for those reasons and loses its ability to induct additional water vapor from the tropical ocean, the result is a cooling of the system as it loses energy. That produces torrential rainfall and if the system is slowed, it is concentrated over the area that the stalling occurs in. The sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean basin are typically warmer in the cold phase of the PDO [Pacific Decadal Oscillation] as we are in, and we find that measurements of sea surface temperatures and resulting surface air dewpoint temperatures are no different now than they have been for many decades. This story therefore, is complete crap, with Trenberth's name attached to it. -- Craig ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Nice car you could probably get for $6500 right now. Motivated seller, or so it seems. It’s an auction car, so no history, make sure to check on the idler gear. Yes, but I’m still gonna blame him, he is so incredibly fiendishly powerful that in less than 2 years he has mastered the control of a CAT4 hurricane. Perhaps he is using the Bushcheneyhalliburton weather control machine they used on Katrina. --FT Sent from iPhone > On Sep 12, 2018, at 1:41 PM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > > Would it be too political if I pointed out that Trump made the hurricane? > (/sarcasm) > https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/another-hurricane-is-about-to-batter-our-coast-trump-is-complicit/2018/09/11/ccaed766-b5fb-11e8-a7b5-adaaa5b2a57f_story.html > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Don't use cheap 722.6 connector bushings
I yield to your superior understanding of German grammar! Merriam-Webster lists "nothing" as either a noun, pronoun, or adverb depending on usage. Perhaps because I think more in a mathematical or logical structure, I equate "nothing" with "zero", and I see it as a noun. It's hard for me to understand how the German meaning could be a different grammatical part of speech than the English. Have you ever considered installing some form of shutters that would remain attached to the buildings so that all you had to do when a storm threatens is to close them and lock them down? Given the frequency with which you folks seem to have to batten down the hatches, it would seem to me that you should try to make it a quick and easy process. I am planning to do something similar with the cottage at the lake. Every fall we screw panels over all of the windows and every spring we remove them. If I convert them into hinged shutters, it will be easier and faster and I won't have to store them in the summer. I can also close the shutters over the larger and more exposed windows between visits if I think it a good idea. Re: [MBZ] OT Flo
Well, it's just me and my ladders and my power drivers... We have some fairly old YSI instruments onto which various sensors can be mounted. They have internal batteries and memory and can run for up to 100 days while logging data from the sensors. When I was setting them up the internal files still stored in memory (having sat for a LONG time) were from 6 and 7 years ago, so the things sat since then but fired right up and worked fine, data were still good in them. We called the company and talked to an engineer there who helped us with a coupla things we couldn't figure out. This is a newer version but basically the same thing https://www.ysi.com/6920-v2-2 They are spendy, several $k. These were NOAA "surplus" had been sitting in a storage room for a long time but had all the stuff with them, including the hand-held units for field programming and downloading data and a bunch of extra sensors. Probably a good $50k worth of stuff, your tax dollars at work! My professor buddy got them from someone he knows who works at the marine lab here, she was glad they were going to get used for something useful. They had actually used them in some similar study up the coast a bit. Here is one we put in a tidal creek near a friend's property, it drains a fairly developed area. We put one in a another branch of the larger creek it drains into, across the road, which drains an undeveloped area, so we will get some good comparisons of how the water quality is different between the two distinct watersheds. We attached some 4" PVC field drain pipe to a stake and a root here, and to a dock on the other one, and then dropped the sonde into the pipe. The water can flow through the pipe while protecting the instrument. It was just about low tide when we put it out, so it was not down in the water in that creek, hard to slog out into it through the pluff mud, but it will be covered when the tide gets up, or when the rain runoff is flowing. Tide will get up 6ft or more in there from where it was in the pic. My buddy has a nice (surplus) weather station we will set up near these 2 units, so we will have a lot of good weather and rainfall data to correlate with the water readings. SCIENCE!!! Take that Flo! Turns out there are some Weather Underground hobby stations close by too, we can get their data for comparison. Fun times. --FT On 9/12/18 10:39 AM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: On Wed, 12 Sep 2018 10:16:22 -0400 Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote: Well the latest projections have me rethinking my boarding decision from yesterday when I put all the plywood away, looks like I need to get it out again and start putting it up as Flo might turn south and make a coastal run down our way. As the picture of the email I posted just after you shows, there is now a significant southward bulge in NHC's possible track as it makes landfall, even to south Georgia. So, yes, you should board up. May you have strength and help to do it. I think they are now counting in the European predictions more. On a positive note my buddy and I got our water monitoring probes deployed at 3 locations around the Island yesterday evening, set up to record data for 15 days every 10 minutes so we will get water depth, temp, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll, and salinity. We'll get tidal surge data and whatever happens with the water levels and quality from the rains.
