Re: [MBZ] Buying Used Vehicles

2018-10-08 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
The local Nickle Ad papers have no deals on cars. Local rags are two columns
of ads on the back page. ALL the ads in 2 columns, not only car. CL is the
listing of last resort for standard cars. Normal number of idiots selling.
Not enough real buyers. Most are wanting “perfect” almost CPO for pennies out
of a used car.

No qnap experience but my Synology boxes are all still ok. I had one disk
failure on a ds211j that coincided with a power cut before I put everything
on ups. I would look for a possible external cause for your qnap problems.
Two fails is too many. I'm using Apc smartups on my systems (from
excessups). Cheap ups don't work well with my standby generator which puts
out over 63 hz at low load.

I put the floor jack under the diff, and then you can put the stands
under the pads. For the front, I put the jack carefully under the front
subframe crossmember (don't touch the center steering link.)

Larry Turner via Mercedes wrote:
Hmm, those pads are where I usually put my floor jack. Are you

jack stands?

Don't have enough wood blocks to do as you do, but I usually put the
tire/wheel under the car in the hopes I wouldn't get squished less
that 8" - my estimate of the width of tire and wheel I will put under
the frame. ;-)

Hmm interesting.  I will have to try that.

I have a $250 deposit.

I bid $90 on a car and I'm now the high bidder.
It just let me bid $175 on a second car, so like I thought the deposit allows
me to bid on multiple cars totaling $2500 without paying the premium member
annual fee.

As you know, it's one car, up to 1000, without a deposit.
With a deposit it's multiple cars totaling 10x your deposit.
So a $500 deposit lets you bid on $5000 worth of cars.

It was also a donation vehicle but was being sold on approval. I’m betting

I wanted to bid both but my account only lets me do one at a time and I wanted
the nicer one more. The first one they went across the block was the wrecked
one with the reserve. If I had bid on it, I would have had to wait for seller
to approve it or counter, which would have locked me out of bidding on the 2nd
one. The first one went for $80 on approval. I’m betting it turns back up in
the next week or 2 then I can pick it up.

Could be a nice BAT candidate.

Take it apart and remove the brushes. Go to your local Ace Hardware and look
for the aisle with their “majik drawers”. They have a majik drawer that has
small motor brushes of all types and sizes. If they're a little big file them
down to fit.

It’s worked for me on a number of blower motors.

Re: [MBZ] Buying Used Vehicles

2018-10-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I only do CL deals in the parking lot of the local sheriff’s department. They
promote it as a safe place, since they’re all around and it’s got loads of CCTV
cameras, too. When you get there you can walk in and tell the desk sergeant
why you’re there and they’ll keep an eye on things.

Met the buyer for the S430 there and he thought I was nuts. I asked him if he
was comfortable going to a place he was unfamiliar with carrying many thousands
of dollars in cash.

Then reality set in.

I have a concealed carry permit, but I still wouldn’t do a deal with major cash
anywhere else even if I am packing.

[MBZ] Advance Auto/AGM Battery

2018-10-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Oy.

The E320 wagon has been acting flaky the last couple of days, and today it
acted like it wasn’t going to crank.

Got home from work, put it in the DAS, which immediately complained about a low
battery. Checked the battery (factory MB standard) and saw the date code was
for 2005. I think I got my money’s worth out of it.

Went on Advance’s web site, blew through the application, found a promo code
for 25% off, placed the order.

Got to the store and discovered that their application showed an H6. Wrong.

Cancelled the order, made another one from the store, waited for it to drop and
finished. AGM H8/group 49 cost me $155.61 out the door.

Mitch will be proud of me.

stuff and tell the holders of the junk where the line begins for the $50 gift
cards.

Sometimes when the cops are running the show, you'll run across a badge heavy
perp who doesn't believe in freedom of association.

[MBZ] ?Size of brushes for HVAC Blower motor, '95 124?

2018-10-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Anyone know what size the brushes are? This is for my '95 124.131 (E300
Diesel) HVAC blower motor with the filters. On the spare blower motor for
my '87, the brushes look like they are 8mm by 10mm.

If I could find the blower motor for sale without the fan blades for the
same price as the non-filter type motore (about $90) I just get a new
motor, but I've only been able to find them with the blades installed for
$200 and up for a brand name that isn't Uro or some other off-brand.

Maybe it was always a hot mess and I've only realized it recently? Don't
know. The junk I've been seeing through my local craigslist and the numbers
attached to it, complete with the grammar issues and bad information. The
last vehicle I put up on Craigslist was a couple of years ago. Stayed up
for full term, and I re-posted. I'm not selling a new car, sure, but a good
solid driver with a $1000 price tag. All day long emails coming in "Give
you $200 for it." I'm sure you would. *I'd* give $200 for it, and I'm the
one selling it. *sigh* Then we haven't even gotten into the car deals that
have "gone down" where the guy buying shows up with the cash, and the guy
selling leaves with the cash, and the car. Gotten bad enough around here
most people only want to do deals in front of the police. My wife is far
past the point of "Don't ever use Craigslist again, ever." There just has
to be a better way, I think.

put the jack stands under the rubber pads that are under the factory jack

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Yesterday's Gun Buyback

2018-10-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Simple answer:
Get a gun dealers license. As a registered dealer you have more latitude in
purchase of a gun.
Not total carte blanch.. but more latitude... Interesting thought,
however... worthy of exploration.

As to why and how that beautiful pistol showed up... my instant thought was
"divorce retribution". ie "I'll fix that two timing bastard"...

Re: [MBZ] Jack Stand Positions - Rear- 1991 300D W124

2018-10-08 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
Thanks - I'll take a look at the WSM and/or Parts Diagram to make sure
I'm familiar with the LCA's in the rear.  Are you suggesting I use the
outer LCA  mounting point?  IIRC that's kind of rounded, isn't it?

I am thinking about raising the right rear with the floor jack (it's in
good condition, only about a year old) and remove the RR wheel so I can
show my wife where to put the Jack Stands.

I know not to work on a car that is raised on a jack, but I will put the
removed wheel/tire on the ground under the chassis to minimize how far
the car could go if the worst case happens.  And it will only be like
that until I can spot the Jack Stand position.  Should be OK.  I tend to
err on the side of caution.

Thanks for the suggestion

Don't have enough wood blocks to do as you do, but I usually put the tire/wheel
under the car in the hopes I wouldn't get squished less that 8" - my estimate
of the width of tire and wheel I will put under the frame. ;-)

Bearing in mind I'll be removing the hub & carrier, where should I try to put

Right now, I only plan to jack up and use a stand under the right rear.

Suggestions?

[MBZ] My latest copart purchase

2018-10-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I just ended up high bidder at $200 on a 80 300SD. It’s listed as a donation
vehicle and with the crappy photos looks to be pretty clean and rust free. No
mention of if it runs or not. The strange thing is there were 2 80 300SD’s
listed, this one was pure sale, the other looked like it could be fairly decent
but had a mild hit in the front that only appears to have pushed the front
grille in a little bit. It looked like it had been sitting outside for a while.
It was also a donation vehicle but was being sold on approval. I’m betting
these both came from the same place but not sure why they listed the nicer car
as pure sale and not the other. Maybe they figured it would get a lot of bids.
