The cheep engines crap out early too, resulting in huge bills, as used
engines are somewhere between made of platinum and unobtainium.

Surely some of the neighborhood greenie weenies drive the likes of

Both djeeps have had issues

#1 boy had his mess the bed two years ago when it had big issues and
stayed with the dealership for repairs of I recall not (two months
after acquiring). There were some cooling troubles as well. Then a big
wind grabbed hold of the driver door and tried to rip it off.

#2 boy also had cooling issues, as well as charging, steering,
electrical, and other things not shared with me. Much to do with
owners not having a clue how to keep older or most any car running
unless you take it to a dealership. You know? The things are made of
pure goodness and will do anything you want with no attention or care.

Re: [MBZ] Rifles

2018-11-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I suspect some of it is the "its old and needs to be replaced" mindset.
Probably some of the "the government will give us money, we should spend it."
mindset too.
When my dad shot the moose in '16 my buddy Ben asked "Did you have to make the
ammo for that gun?" I asked "are there guns you don't make the ammo for?"
Ben shot a bear last year, he's got some new fangled thing with plastic tipped
bullets. The bear ran off into the bush before it croaked. I suggested the
11.5mm (just over .45 cal) black powder round dad shot the moose with would
have dropped it where it stood...

If the cops want to be operators operating operationally, they're probably

I watched that prius this morning. After watching Chris Fixx swap in a fresh
battery into a prius last night. Figured I should know how if I got the lexus
hybrid.

First, take the car apart (after purchasing a rebuild pack of cells for half
dealer cost) so that nothing is attached behind the front seats. Then you have
to put it all back and everything is peachy keen again. He picked up the car
as non-op for like $1500 and will sell it on after the install for $4k.

MBCA club event today at a convertible and upholstery shop. Not enough people
showed up, but it was a good event. Fellow will fabricate most anything as
custom.

I asked what his approach to the RARE interiors might be. My SL is green on
green. There are no major providers who supply that stuff. So, my seats are a
custom build. Same as the carpets, door cards, console, and all the other
goodies. GAHH top is at least standard, so only need to spend $2k there.

I will just have to go the Preservation Class way.

Some of us old farts can't turn our necks as far as we used to, making the
backup camera really great! It's also very nice for lining up to a trailer.
I installed an aftermarket cheap one in the F150 (bought very few options
with it) and am very glad I did. I used to have to get out and lower the
tailgate to see where I was backing when unloading it - no more.

Replacement with retirement of present equipment is most likely a
government budget that needs to "spend funds before the current cycle runs
out" or lose the allocation.

The Bushmasters will be taken in as "police turn ins" and sold off. Main
advantage for new rifles will be they are new, and the budget money got
spent... thus justified..

Oh, yeah - the 2002 needed a crankshaft position sensor this week. $27
and five minutes to replace. Other than paying to have the instrument
cluster rebuilt when I bought the car because the pixels in the
display were wonky ($110 from BBA Reman with a lifetime guarantee) I
have not put dime one into the 2002 E320 in the year and a half I’ve
owned it beyond the above. So that’s $137.00 plus maintenance.

If you have to go Asian, go Nissan or Mazda. Avoid the Korean crap
that’s circulating around these days. I have two co-workers that own
Hunday cars that are under two years old, and they‘re falling apart.
One of them has less than 10k on it and the lettering and icons have

Plastics are coming apart and breaking. The build quality is horrid.

If the Bushies are old enough to be any good, it's pretty much a direct
replacement, one factory made AR15 for another. Some undesirable stuff was sold
under the Bushmaster name after Freedom Group acquired it. Like the old
Bushmasters, Sig is good but nothing exotic or special.
If the cops want to be operators operating operationally, they're probably
demanding shorter lighter more maneuverable carbines these days, maybe the old
guns were 20" barrels and the new ones are 14.5 or 16", maybe with nice optical
sights on them.

Although newer cars with cameras that show the floor a couple feet behind the
car make his way more practical than ever.

SWMBA seems morally against the marque.

It clashes with her perceived identity as a nice person. That I gather to
myself the bottom feeder sort of car, and those tend to require a reasonable
investment to update, this is deemed to be a “waste” of money.

My perspective is otherwise. I see them as more fiscally responsible than
paying for newer cars which will probably require a significant investment to
keep them in good repair. The W220 was a decade old when it came my way. In
the four years I drove it, repair costs equalled purchase price. At the point
of SLS and cluster failure, I had tossed close to $5k in 12 months at it.
Those repairs would have upped it to another $6k. Car would not meet KBB for
those repairs.

Dan may be very well versed in how to make the newer cars worth owning, but I
am only capable of keeping simple old cars on the road with what little cash I
have and a few band aids.

The local auto auction had these things on offer, and they sold for pennies to
the cab companies. Then the Priapus things began to show up and all the taxi
folks flocked to them paying close to retail KBB. Now the cops are getting rid
of Chargers and other more militaristic models.

[MBZ] OT: Irv Gordon, who drove 3.2M miles in his P1800, has died

2018-11-17 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Irv Gordon, the famous million-miler Volvo
 man, has
reportedly died at age 77. The news was confirmed by his fansite
, which cited a Facebook
post by his daughter.

Gordon, a former schoolteacher from Long Island, gained fame and Guinness
World Records mentions by driving, driving and driving the Volvo P1800 he
bought in June 1966. He originally turned to Volvos after having trouble
with two consecutive Chevrolet
 Corvairs;
Gordon needed a dependable car to get him to work and back every day, doing
125 miles of daily commuting.

A *Wired* article on Gordon
 says he
really got into the record-driving thing after realizing he had passed the
250,000-mile mark with his Volvo with just basic maintenance and no repairs
, getting
a nice letter back from Volvo after he wrote the company to praise its
product.

The first million miles were a big deal for Gordon, his Volvo and the
carmaker: Volvo gave him a new, Bertone-designed 780 coupe he proceeded to
use as a family car, eventually selling it with just over 450,000 miles—the
P1800, he kept. The Guinness record was broken at 1.69 million miles,
almost exactly a million miles after Gordon had the engine rebuilt despite
the car not needing the work after all. It turned out to be fine, and
Gordon had just been overly cautious. The second million-mile mark, passed
in 2002, earned Irv a new C70
.

The P1800 did receive a new engine in 2009, as the original one was losing
compression, and some bodywork damage sustained in SEMA
 transport
cemented Gordon's long-held belief that no one else should drive the car
but him. He also did all the oil changes
 and
brake work himself. The last mileage update on his Facebook fanpage put the
car at 3.2 million miles, or over 5 million kilometers, in May 2018.

Gordon drove the car all over the world. Imagine all the people you meet
and stories you hear when you're out on the road, mile after mile ticking
on the odometer of the car that's become a part of you, and vice versa. As
Gordon said in another interview
:

"I bought this car, and I was so pleased that the car always took me to
work every day, took me home every day, never gave me any grief, never gave
me any problems, never needed any repairs. So, I expect that I'll still be
driving the car until there's nothing left of me—the car'll still be
around. The car's in better shape than I am."

I prefer to walk behind the car before I hop in and back out.
Besides that, if I'm driving stick (only the Saturn and the 2.3-16) I shut the
engine off 1/8 mile before my driveway and coast into the garage.

Although newer cars with cameras that show the floor a couple feet behind the
car make his way more practical than ever.

Mitch.

In front?  How do you get the daily drivers out?  I would think
you mean behind.

Might work with "little" cars, but my GMC 3/4 ton chassis are too
long.  Or my garage is short.
