The first three were shot on a tripod. I couldn't find the moon with the
camera on the tripod during the full eclipse, so that last one is handheld,
at ISO 6400, f/8, 1 sec., with a 500 mm lens.

I checked a little while ago and couldn't spot the moon, didn't go outside 
though, it might have clouded over.

Beautiful full moon and no clouds here. 
But -1F is cold, even with less than 5mph wind. 
Went out for 2-3 minutes and the cold went right through my jeans. 
Hard to type with the coughing fit I'm still going through. 
Even crazydog beat me back to the porch, she says it's too cold out there.

 LOL, it got up to 20F today, snowed/sleeted pretty much all day. The weather 
guessers at one point had us nearing 30", we got more like 6. Facebook is 
loaded with jokes about it being a male named storm and coming up 
short.Supposed to get down to -3F tonight and tomorrow night but then 50 on 
Thursday...If we'd gotten big snow I'd be going grooming tomorrow, not now...

 I was fooling around with the SL600 this afternoon and took out the 
battery to unclog the drain plug at the bottom of the fender well.  I 
found an interesting tool under the tray, it is plastic/nylon about 6" 
long, 9mm square with 2 rectangular parts on the ends that are sized 5mm 
and 8mm on one end and 6mm and 7mm on the other.  It is marked  
Wagenbrett y2 0410 012.


I found http://wagenbrett.de which looks like it manufactures some kind 
of precision tools.  I see this one 
http://www.wecowa.de/en/product/48/60%20feeler%20gauge/212/01%20feeler%20gauge%20-%20made%20of%20plastic/ 
which is pretty similar to this one I found, not quite the same sizes.


I wonder if this was used to build the car, like to check body seams or 
something, and got dropped under the battery tray where it has sat for 
23 or 24 years.  Anyway, it was kind of a interesting find.

I like the car!  The pressure operated waste-gate is an improvement, simple
and less likely to cut your power, also probably easier to adjust if the
boost is off.

I think the problem is that the crank case ventilation oil separator is
built into the valve cover, and when it dies then too much oil vapor
escapes into the intake.  Not a serviceable part, normal function is
restored with the purchase of a new valve cover, which is pretty big
bucks.  Install the catch can, and now the owner can "catch" the oil
instead of burning it in the engine, so you see this is a "green"
solution!  Well not really, the catch can outlet has a filter and then out
to atmosphere, so other gasses that should be burned are not.

Inspect the catch can, see how much oil is has caught, ask how often it
needs to be emptied.  All the blue RTV sealing the new hose to the valve
cover will be a pain to clean up, but I wouldn't mess with it.

I am not interested in slip on covers.  I couldn't care less about 
appearance.  I care about performance with DOT4 and DOT5 fluids.


I put new hoses on the 1980 123 and they swelled shut within a year. (as 
in check valve)


I am looking for a brake hose that will resist all brake fluids, 
including DOT5 silicon.  I thought perhaps the teflon lined SS hoses 
would work.


I think all the hoses I put on  the '80 were ATE, but perhaps not.  OE 
hoses subjected to DOT 4 for a few years will withstand DOT5, and all 
the other ATE hoses I put on were fine with DOT 4 or DOT5.

Contact cement. Only stuff I would use on weatherstripping. Just as I would 
only use their sealant for breather covers. I can’t quantify what it is, just 
that it works and works well, every time.

or supports. That means whoever worked on it, probably doesn't know what they 
are doing. It has also had the AMG Dave/GSXR turbo mod. Meaning the waste gate 
is mechanical and not electronic (probably a good thing). I'd offer $1500.

Slip-on braid is bling.  It can't fit tight enough to do what the metal braid 
is supposed to do,
as regards braking performance.

You do NOT want metal braid, of any flavor, for general driving.  Abrasion from 
dirt is the problem.
The regular hoses work perfectly, perhaps for twenty years or so, and are 
inexpensive.  Why mess
with success?

Metal 'performance' braid should come after a coffee-can exhaust tip, and some 
go-fast stickers.

Nope.  Make for a hose that doesn't stretch with pressure.  Real
racers like 'em.

I have never used them, partly because the originals do well
enough for me - so far.

I wondered about the blowby issue with my car as well since it had the 
aftermarket “can” installed. Blowby wasn’t bad at all on the car, I think 
someone just got lazy when they looked a the cost to fix what was broken in the 
system and went for the cheapest approach.

It’s an aftermarket approach to crankcase ventilation. Not ideal, but doesn’t 
hurt anything. You probably don’t recall, but the E300D you looked at for me a 
year ago had a similar kludge.

Looks like a nice car, and the price is decent, too.

I’ll let others comment on the engine as I’m not that familiar with the turbo 
2.5.

There is supposed to be a plastic hose that goes from the valve cover to the 
intake hose between the air box and turbo. The fact they have this thing rigged 
up makes me think it’s got way too much blow by. Or maybe somebody is just 
stupid and thought this was better. In any case, the 124 2.5 turbo is one of 
the best cars they made. Very economical.

Those stainless braid over teflon or nylon tubing 'racing brake hoses' aren't 
for use by normal people, especially those of us who live on dirt roads. 
Get some sandy road grit in the braid and they chew themselves to pieces in a 
year or two.

Craigslist sellers, for the most part, suck.

I got stood up by a buyer last night on a laptop I’ve got for sale. They wanted 
to meet at a local Starbucks but never showed. I should have realized they were 
hosing me as they never really asked much about any details in their messages.

I was thinking about emailing them like I had met them and sold the laptop to 
them just to mess with them, but it’s not worth the calories.

“Hey, glad you liked the laptop! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I’ll send that 
duckhead for the power supply on Tuesday to the address you gave me.”
