I can do them in the car for the 110, 123, 107, and 126, but the 124
(Diesel at least) is way too tight.   Last time i did it, I lost a
clip.  This time a clip fell out from somewhere, so I gather it is the
one I lost, riding around for years, until today.   So now I have a
spare clip  in the drawer with the shifter bushings.   Cool!

Reminds me that I need to replace them again on the TE, I have to put the
shifter in neutral to start it if its not on level ground.

Unfortunately the Saturn is the only one I own with proper winter tires on it.

But I've been amazed at how well the Cruze and its Goodyear Assurance LRR tires
perform in snow and ice. I just headed out to the iced up road this AM, which
had become wet by the time I left, aimed the car up the hill to the west of me,
pushed the pedal down 1/8" and let the computers do their thing. By the time I
got to the top of the (not very steep) hill I was going 20mph, not far short of
what I could have achieved in the Saturn on Cinturato Winters.

Re: [MBZ] OT: General Motors

2019-02-17 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I've found some stuff called "Liquid Bandage" that is nearly perfect for
treating the average mechanic type wound.

It's pretty cheap and is flexible enough to put on a finger joint and seals
up the damaged area. Goes on with the consistency sort of like finger nail
polish and it dries quickly, If you need to, you can put on a second or
third coat to add thickness of the wound repair.

It has disinfectant and a mild blood stop agent built into the liquid, and
it will hold up through repeated hand washings or showers. I've had great
success using it... now carry it as part of my tool kit in every vehicle.
Walgreens Drug has it. I've found several house brands at other such
places.

Well, I finished one project out of two.
The ML tensioner and belt was easy-peasy, except I had to download a diagram of
the belt routing when I had way too much belt left over.

The belt I took off the ML was marked 02W40.
Is that code for 'born in the 40th week of 2002'?
Belt looks fine, except for a couple of fresh gouges probably associated with
coming off at speed. If it's original to the car, I'd say it was time to
replace it anyway.

The 'Continental' tensioner was unmarked except for a code number molded in the
plastic pulley. Plain white box with a sticker that said CONTINENTAL and a part
number.
No country of origin on the part, the box, or the instruction sheet. Doesn't
look quite as nicely made as the one I took off. The new one had a pin holding
it compressed. The old one had a hole for the same pin. I stuck the pin in a
ziploc with the old belt. Installing belts with that pin in place is a lot
easier than doing it while holding a 17mm wrench on the tensioner.

The Saturn, well, I quit trying to cut the blower out after I broke a utility
knife blade, after I bumped two cold brittle fingers on something sharp under
there and cut myself twice.
It's a pain laying under the dash with your legs hanging out the door with snow
falling.
Much less annoying to lean under a hood in the dark with the snow falling after
giving up on the under dash project for the day.

yep, on the 124, you have to take out the whole rod assembly and arm to

Motor mounts are good, trans mount is new. (now)  new shifter bushing.
It still goes thumpity thump.   I remember the deal now:  Last year I
put the new M mounts in, and was going to put in the trans mount but
since it looked ok, ans I was unable to get the nut off the top, (and
ran out of time) I left it.   I put a flat washer under the nut, so next
time will be no problem.

Plan now is to get a new bearing and holder/mount; put them on a spare
driveshaft, then some time after that is done, swap out the whole assembly.

I need to find a good stealer to by parts from.  not the local keystone
cops/robbers.  Will consult the Star for that, and maybe try the stealer
Q used to get parts from.

If the rubber part of the mount is well above the frame the engine mounts are

Also helps to microwave a cup of water to boiling, then drop the bushings into
it and let them get soft for about 10 minutes. I just did the one shift bushing

Re: [MBZ] 124 thumpidy thump

2019-02-17 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Take the shift lever off, attempting to replace with the lever on will result
in a chewed up hand. I know, I tried. I always take the lever off these days.

If the tranny mount was mush, your trouble will go away.

If the rubber part of the mount is well above the frame the engine mounts are
good. When they leak out, the rubber gets really close to the frame, or
actually touches.

Yes, the MB flex disks come with bolts.  I save the old bolts, so I have
a fairly extensive collection if you run into a problem.

Taking the headliner down and re-gluing it doesn't sound like a fun job.

[MBZ] $500E300 oil change

2019-02-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Was a half nice day so got out the oil sucker to change oil on the
$500E300.  Had a new filter I had bought, it had the o-rings for the
bottom 2 of the thing that sticks in at the bottom, and one for the top
where the top of the cover fits on the housing. Everything is crap plastic.

Took out the old filter while the oil was sucking.  The cap was REALLY
torqued tightly, I'm surprised the plastic had not cracked.  There was
no or-ring on it at the top of the filter hold/capwhere it seals against
the housing.  I guess that is why it was torqued so tightly.  Cleaned it
up, but the o-rings on, new filter, and put it all back.  Tightened it
down (says 25Nm, I did not have my torque wrench out) by hand and a bit
with the wrench, not too tight.  BTW it took a 1 7/16 in socket to fit
on the hex knob on top of the filter housing cap, that's like 35mm or
36mm or something I guess.

So got the oil sucked out, put in new oil, fired it up, oil is blowing
out around the top of the filter housing where the o-ring is under the
cap.  So I tightened it a bit more but then the o-ring started to
squeeze out.  Went and got the torque wrench and it did not go down to
25Nm so I set it at the lowest and bit lower, even that was still too
tight and it was leaking around the o-ring at the top.  I fooled with it
for about an hour, loosening, tightening, feeling the o-ring (which kept
squeezing out), starting the car, feeling oil blowing out...  Finally
after a while and about a dozen tries I got it to seal from leaking, but
it was barely on finger tight.  I tightened it a bit more with the
wrench and it seemed to be not leaking, so will see.  I hope it doesn't
work loose as it really is not very tight.

On the 617 engines the housing and cap have a groove for the seal, on
this car it just slides up the threads on the cap and sits on the bottom
of the cap, no groove.  The housing itself is just like a tin can, no
lip or anything for the o-ring to seat against, so it easily spreads out
if it more than a little tight. Seems like a really stupid design.  I
guess I'll keep an eye on it to see if it leaks more.

[MBZ] Adjusting pop pressures

2019-02-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I really need to do something with my injectors on my 98 E300.  A few
weeks ago I went to install a set of 314 Bosio nozzles.  All of the
injectors with the original nozzles popped at 135 but swapping to the
Bosio nozzles all consistently popped at 90 bar, way too low.  I put the
original nozzles back for now.  Car clatters loudly when idling and will
start smoking after idling for a while.  In contrast, I just got done
putting motor mounts in the former AZ bob E300 and that car is very
quiet at idle and no smoke.  It is night and day difference.  Anyway, I
know I have seen it somewhere before, but what thinkness of shim do I
need to raise the pressure from 90 bar to 135 bar, or roughly  40-45
bar? The shims on the 603 style injectors are too wide and I see part
numbers in the EPC for shims for the 606 injectors in various thickness.
If I can determine what size I need I will order 6 of them.  Either
that, of just get a set of Bosch or Monarch nozzles and hope they stay
at the same pop pressure as the currently nozzles.  I still could never
figure out why the Bosios popped so much lower will all other parts the
same.

I thought the Seville with the unique trunk was UGLY too.
In the early/mid 1960s a car tester for one of the magazines (Popular Science,
Mechanics Illustrated or similar) called the Rolls with that design feature a
'wheeled Victorian box'.
By 1980 it was an incredible anachronism, so Cadillac put it into production.

Re: [MBZ] 124 thumpidy thump

2019-02-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Without digging out the carrier bearing and its support, the driveshaft
seems relatively firm. However, the trans mount is mush.  I was wrong, I
did not change it last year.  (records trump memory...)  It also has a U
shaped 14 ga steel "castle" the nut sits in so that you can't get an
open end wrench on the nut.  With the drive shaft flex disk installed,
you can't get a box wrench in it either.  After some cogitation, I
ground off a box 19mm so it was only about 1/4" top to bottom.  That fit
in there and I was able to get the mount out.   picture to follow or
available offlist to those interested.  The old one is OE with a 123 number.

I am gonna switch that, check the height of the motor mounts and then
drive it to see if it still put the DS in an oscillation.   I HOPE this
will fix it.

Anyone remember the motor mount "acceptable" limit dimension?
Apparently, I remembered changing mounts on another car.

The trans shifter bushing is also kaput.  more fun  It is too tight
to change it in place.  gotta take the shift arm off the trans to change
the bushing...

OE parts are quite reasonable unless you’re looking to bottom feed with
something like URO. Add to that things like bearing kits you get from the
dealer have all sorts of little bits and pieces you don’t get from aftermarket
suppliers, like the metal cups and the boot for the splined shaft. I think a
center bearing kit is around $40 retail from the dealer. Bearing carriers are
more expensive, but you can usually get OEM ones for less.

I had a guy say something to me the other day on my finnie group that makes
sense, at least on the older cars - “Why get it from someone else when Mercedes
still makes it? You don’t know how much longer they will.”

This is becoming more and more prevalent with the late 1980s-90s models. A lot
of W124 stuff is drying up form Mercedes.

[MBZ] OT: General Motors

2019-02-17 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Last Friday my Saturn Ion blower motor decided to quit blowing.

OK, the ML needs more exercise anyway...
Monday the tensioner pulley bearing seized and the plastic pulley exploded and
the ML rode home on a tow truck with no alternator or water pump.

So today, I've got the day off and parts in hand, so let's start with the
Saturn.
To remove blower motor, cut the blower retaining cup out of the bottom of the
heater box, then put the new motor in the cup and screw the cup to the heater
box with the enclosed retaining ring.

Except my VDO (Taiwan) blower from CrockAuto doesn't come with any instructions
or screws. I don't know if I was supposed to get just the blower and the
bracket or if there are pieces missing. So, now that my hand stopped bleeding I
need to go back outside and finish cutting the blower out, then drive to town
and buy some screws...

A quick look at saturnfans.com tells me I'm not the first guy to buy a new
blower without the necessary six screws to put it in, somebody with a TYC
blower had that problem too and used #8 sheet metal screws.

The 2012mML bluetec we bought was same color combo, I liked it. Drove a
GL diesel too and it just seemed to not have quite enough power to move
it around, but it was probably adequate.  The ML was a screamer.  I
liked it but it was bigger than what my wife needed/wanted, though it
suited me.  They have good towing capacity and quite roomy.  That seems
a fairly reasonable price on it.

the engine but apparently purges no problem, I'll stop down this week and see
if it needs more coolant but it ran for about half an hour at a steady 185F so

I wonder if it is possible to get at the carrier bearing by taking off
the rear section of the exhaust, or if you have to drop the whole
exhaust to get the shields off and get at the bearing and its holder.  I
have spare disks, but if it is the carrier, I will have to diagnose,
then put it back together for a week to wait for parts.  Too bad there
is not an access panel from the top!

I'm pretty sure it is not mounts, as those were replaced last year.
could be one went bad, but not all 3.   I think flex disk or carrier
bearing mount are most likely.  Thanks!

Very likely a bad transmission mount, the classic symptoms are vibration under
acceleration -- on decel it's shoved down against the carrier, so no thumps.

I'd check the engine mounts too, very like also flat and needing replacement --
you can get excessive vibration on acceleration from those, too, as the empty
gel filled mount allows engine noise to get transmitted to the frame.
Different location for the noise, though.

Shake the driveshaft too -- a center carrier bearing mount going bad can also
give heavy vibration, but it's located just behind the console, not at the
tranny.

I've fixed all of these problems.
