Re: [MBZ] Snakes in the attic

2019-05-31 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
That’s a rat snake. Very good to have around though they can be scary. Can
climb trees too to get tree rats and birds. I saw one today about 4ft long
crossing my driveway as i was headed out to do errands.

Last year I was out in the garage workshop sitting at my bench doing something.
I had a broom or something leaning against it, it started moving. WTF. So I
stand up to lean over to see what it was and this big corn snake about 5ft long
pops up. I think we were both startled. I grabbed another stick and was trying
to lift it up and put it outside but it meandered off into my lumber rack. Now
these things look a bit like copperheads so this is what I thought it was as I
know there are copperheads around, and that really had me scared, the damn
thing was slinking around my garage. But turns out it was a good snake so I
figured it was keeping the vermin down.

Yup, that’s it. And since this is a V8, there are 16 plugs. Try finding 16
plugs at ANY FLAPS.

Done.Did the right side motor mount in about 60 minutes taking my time. Plugs
were pretty easy, as there’s a lot of room to work in.

Not looking forward to tomorrow. Much, much tighter space to work in for both.

M119s, too. 45 minutes and I had the old mount out.

Gotta go over to Ace Hardware and get some new nuts and washers, as I’m not
going to reuse the old ones as they were really rusty.

I’m going to save the driver’s side for tomorrow. While I’ve got things jacked
up I’m going to replace the spark plugs on the passenger side as well, then do
the same on the driver’s side when I do it tomorrow. The plugs in this thing
were shot, too. What a surprise!

And now for some visual enjoyment. Think I needed new motor mounts?

Subject: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** MB SUV Carfax Please?

Hi:

Just received a request from the DIL in Honolulu:

She asks:

___

<< Hi Dad,

I am looking into possibly trading in my car for a SUV. I realized that I would
prefer an SUV that will be more reliable than my Hyundai as I think I made a
bad decision "settling" for a cheaper car. I owe 12k on my Hyundai and do not
want to keep paying for it if I don't foresee myself keeping it long term. I'm
thinking an older used Mercedes. These are the 2 that I am considering - Which
would you go for?

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4Matic Sport Utility 4D

74,860 Miles

VIN= WDCGG8HB7AF458626

V6, 3.5 Liter

16MPG CITY, 21 HWY

$13,495

OR

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML 350 4Matic Sport Utility 4D

92,259 Miles

VIN= 4JGBB8GB5BA706799

V6, 3.5 Liter

$12,995

I want a 4WD and I want a backup camera. The 2011 has both - do you think it
would be expensive to add a backup camera to a vehicle?

I'm test driving both tomorrow after some appointments. Let me know your
thoughts.

Thank you >>

_

She does not do DIY repair, and my son may be at sea (USCG cutter crew ) so a
recommendation for a good indie would help. Any thoughts on these models?

talk to Airlift in MI about a suspension kit.   That is standard fro the

Same applies for lincolns and crown vics with air suspension.

Haha!   You shoulda bought that 240D.   Long after all other life is
dead on this planet, cockaroaches and 240Ds will still be running.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 5/31/19 1:10 PM:

Yup. That resets the BAS for a while, then it acts out again.

Understand that the DAS shows it as being bad, however, if I look at live data
I can see it working and it’s reflecting the proper values. This is why I tend
to believe there is an issue with an intermittent signal that is causing codes
to be thrown.

It could also be crudded up with some spider webs or stuff like that.

Unlike some models that use the “clock spring” arrangement, which this car also
has for connections to the air bag and horn circuit, the steering angle sensor
in this car is mounted on the steering shaft under the dash just ahead of a
universal joint in the steering shaft. It consists of a ring of 8 LEDs and
phototransistors with a rotor that breaks the beam between them to indicated
rotation of the steering and the direction. It’s not covered, so stuff could
potentially get inside of it.

There is also a connector located on it as well, which could be corroded.

The windshield washer leakage issue affects the ABS unit’s connector.
Fortunately I don’t have that problem, however, in anticipation of having to
replace brushes on the ABS unit motor, I did order a set this week. This is
another common problem for these models, so I figured I woudl get a set as
insurance.

And my windshield washer reservoir completely destructed. The plastic on it was
so brittle just leaning on it caused it to shatter in numerous places. I have a
replacement, but it’s a major undertaking to install. Headlight comes out (not
a big deal) but the radiator support has to come out as well. Ugh.

Re: [MBZ] W163/ML Mania

2019-05-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Ugh.

2019-05-31 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Paying someone to fix an MB on Oahu is not a cheap proposition.  For
example, a new a/c clutch in 1991 cost $1200.    Probably 2 or 3K now.

The standard family car on Oahu is a corolla (used to be tercel) or a
sentra.  Maybe they have the income to sink into an ML.  I have no idea
where the H they would "need" 4wd on Oahu.

There used to be a good A/C shop just east of the Bishop St downtown area, and
just mauka from Nimitz. It was close to Lex Brodies tire, but I think Lex
Brodies is gone, and so may be the A/c shop.

That should be a wicked fast sedan. Not like your v12 SL, but pretty
respectable.

From the same time frame, the C500 has faster accel than the E-class AMG,
so I'd expect this to be a little slower than the AMG version, but not too
much.

Boeing has a full court effort to fix the Max and do it quickly and make it
bullet proof. They have hundreds of orders for the plane, that have ALL
been put on hold or canceled, so they have to fix it to eat in the future.
Every competition manufacturer is jumping like a dog on fresh meat on their
customers with their products, so the heat is on... Plus, cause of death
lawsuits by the mile are already filed and in court processes.

Boeing will fix it, but it's likely to little, to late. The Max was a
"throw it together quick to beat the competition" set of changes to a
proven air frame, In actual fact, it shouldn't have happened, it should
have been a new design, instead of a "refit".. instead, it was a "rush
refit" to capture market share. Thus, a system of compromises by
engineering, sales, and marketing departments, lead by bad decisions by
management, while chasing the bottom line...

There are corporate lessons to be learned in this, and as my esteemed
Grandmother said "The price of education is never cheap, no matter where
you get it."

I’ve been fighting with an ELT/BAS/ABS and brake alert lights. The multiple

Anyway, I’ve been driving it to work to get things figured out. Wednesday, no
problem, just the BAS light on occasion. This is a Good Thing.

Thursday I drive in, no issues but the BAS light again, just as I pull into my
space. Meh. Go out at lunch to make a dealer parts run. Dead.

Grrr.

I’m thinking I left the lights in the “Auto” position, which is not working
properly, as it turns the lights on as soon as the key goes in and doesn’t turn
them off in daylight. Hmm. We have a city wide car assistance service that will
come and change tires, put gas in your car, give you a jump, etc. for free. I
call them and they come into the garage.

No joy with their jumper pack. Push the car out of the space and they put the
jumper cables on it - success! Not ready to take any chances, I immediately
drive it home.

Battery appears to be charged but I put it on my charger anyway to be sure.
While that’s going on I hook up the DAS to see what’s up, as well as get a look
at the “actual values” for the rain sensor, which also works with the
headlights for the automatic functions.

All of the sudden, my DAS system is flashing red all over the place. Whaaa??

Battery voltage is down to 10 volts??? The key is on for the diagnostics, but
nothing is running like AC or other large consumers.

I get my 10 amp charger out and put it on the car. Voltage comes up. Hmm. I
finish my DAS stuff.

Go to move the car. Battery dead.

So I yank the battery out and take it down to my FLAPS guy and he tests it.
Bad. I give him BS about the machine saying that no matter what, as it doesn’t
explain the reason why it failed the test. I’ve got a bunch of bonus bucks and
a some discount codes, so I take the battery and go back home to put an order
in for one along with a bunch of other stuff I needed.

Go down to FLAPS first this this morning. No regular H8 batteries. Really? The
manager, who I know pretty well, drags a gold AGM off the shelf and says he’s
going to give it to me at the same price as my regular battery. Woo-hoo!

And then he sees my order sitting on the shelf. Dang it!

So I’ve drug the new battery back home and installed it. I’m doing some other
stuff to the car right now so I haven’t tried it, but I’m assuming it should be
OK. While I had the battery out I popped a spark plug out to see what they
looked like. Yikes! Electrode almost gone. No wonder it idles poorly and
surges. Then I had to try and find someone who had 16 spark plugs in one
location. No joy. Gotta make a couple of stops today to get plugs, too.

If it’s not one thing it’s another…

2019-05-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
New tires all around , at least the rears are new and the fronts have no wear
to speak of. All four are the same brand/size tires.

Than BAS issue is clearly with the steering angle sensor, as the codes that are
thrown all point to it. I’ve just got to determine if it’s cruddy or needs
replacement.

I saw someone on BW said these cars had to have AGM batteries, but I don’t see
that being an issue. They might have come with AGM batteries, but using a
standard flooded lead acid battery certainly can’t affect its ability to
operate properly.

Thanks!

of the aircraft has been their approach to systems whereas Boeing has
always, until MAX, put priority on pilot rather than system. There
are better words in the industry to express this, but I am not in the

So you need plans to build a boat?

Also, the weight of the water can cause the earth to deform downward,
meaning that flood level is a lower bar (easier, less water required) than

[MBZ] okie acres flooding update

2019-05-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The river is now down to 35.09' and we still can't leave.  The forecast
keeps pushing out when the river will drop below flood stage.
Originally is was Friday night, then Saturday by 1am, now it is Saturday
by 1pm.  I am still not clear on if the river dropping below flood stage
will cause the water clear the road.  I suspect we could run into a
situation where the issue could be the lake backed up rather than the
river flooded.  They have been reducing the flow out of the dam at the
lake due to all the flooding downstream.  The current as of yesterday
was still flowing over the road from the north to the south toward the
lake so to me that indicates it is river flow.  I am assuming if the
river drops and the water over the road is standing still, that would be
flooding from the lake backed up.  The big problem is we are forecast to
get rain Saturday night then a chance everyday next week.  All of which
seems to be focused in our area and to the north which would cause all
that water to come down to us again.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes V12 diesel?

2019-05-31 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Don’t bet on it. A lot of times people at the auctions will think these cars
are worth a ton of money and bid they way up. Wouldn’t be surprised if they
don’t go for $10k or more.

2019-05-31 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The 94 is an SL600 (or 600SL, I forget when it changed), you can see the V12
badge on the fender. Definitely not a diesel. The 450SL definitely not a diesel
either.

Someone needs to go and check out the sale, I bet those cars go cheepcheep. The
600 could fetch $7kish on the open market if in good condition, maybe more with
the low miles if everything works. 450 says 10k miles, that could be over $10k
if that is so. Could be bargains to flip.
