Re: [MBZ] $500E500

2019-06-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
"Gently" pull the fender. You won't need anything close to the 3,000 lbs of
force to move sheet metal. Just create the wreck in reverse and save the
fender.. From the pics you've shown in the listing, I would pull the fender
and hammer and dolly it out smooth with it off the car. Use a heat gun to
warm the paint, work the hammer from the inside, and use a block of pine
2x4 with several layers of masking tape so it doesn't scratch the paint as
your dolly on outside. You'll be surprised how fast it comes back to
factory contour.
For now, pull the fender off the tire. More perfect later. Have fun, take
pics .. :))

It’s on the trailer backed in next to a 24” pine tree right close to the
offending fender. That should be a decent anchor for a 3000lb come along.
Sounds like a Sunday afternoon shade tree effort though the pines don’t provide
a lot of shade.

Well, a _dealer_ can sell a car that has shocks so bad I wonder if they're
actually there. I know, because I bought one that way. New front shocks
are on order.

What is 'showing their age' anyway? If they're working fine, they _are_ fine,
and you will never see revenue to make up for the expense. I would not do it,
not unless you're selling some kind of concours vehicle, for a commensurate
price.

The sovereign citizen movement is a loose grouping of American and Commonwealth
litigants, commentators, tax protesters, and financial-scheme promoters.
Self-described "sovereign citizens" see themselves as answerable only to their
particular interpretation of the common law and as not subject to any
government statutes or proceedings.[1] In the United States, they do not
recognize U.S. currency and maintain that they are "free of any legal
constraints".[2][3][4] They especially reject most forms of taxation as
illegitimate.[5] Participants in the movement argue this concept in opposition
to the idea of "federal citizens", who, they say, have unknowingly forfeited
their rights by accepting some aspect of federal law.[6] The doctrines of the
movement resemble those of the freemen on the land movement more commonly found
in the Commonwealth, such as in Britain and in Canada.[7][8][9][10]

Many members of the sovereign citizen movement believe that the United States
government is illegitimate.[11] JJ MacNab, who writes for Forbes about
anti-government extremism, has described the sovereign-citizen movement as
consisting of individuals who believe that the county sheriff is the most
powerful law-enforcement officer in the country, with authority superior to
that of any federal agent, elected official, or local law-enforcement
official.[12] This belief can be traced back to white-extremist groups like
Posse Comitatus and the constitutional militia movement.[13]

Re: [MBZ] Compressor or expansion valve?

2019-06-01 Thread MG via Mercedes
if the expansion valve is freezing and the
pressure going up it could also be the
overpressure or high temp sensor on the dryer
cutting the clutch off.

Gauges first for sure.

Peter Frederick via Mercedes wrote:

Refrigerant leaks out, water leaks in. I suspect you may have a freezing
expansion valve. Put your gauges on it while it's doing this, likely you will
have a hard vacuum when it's blowing hot air because there is nothing going
through the evaporator.

Compressors either work or don't, they vary rarely become intermittent.

The other possibility is something amiss in the control circuit, possibly a bad
evaporator temperature sensor. This will shut the compressor off to prevent
evaporator freeze-up, and if it's bad the PBCU is shutting the compressor off.

I'd check:

Compressor operation while the heat/cool cycle is going and pressures

heater monovalve operation (a flaky heater valve can overpower the AC cooling
with hot coolant, heater hose on the return side shouldn't be hot)

temperature sensors (ambient air, evaporator, heater core, internal temp)

working temperature control wheel (if the solder is cracked or the traces are
corroded, you get infinite resistance across the temperature wheel resistor)

working aspirator motor beside the glove box, attached to the plastic hose (it
falls off, resulting in wild temp swings as the temp sensor for interior air
doesn't have any air moving past it, it's in the overhead lamp housing)

There's more, of course, but the main thing is to figure out if you have a
controller issue or a compressor issue.

used one during installation, even if there was none upon removal.

Well, a _dealer_ can sell a car that has shocks so bad I wonder if they're
actually there. I know, because I bought one that way. New front shocks
are on order.

What is 'showing their age' anyway? If they're working fine, they _are_ fine,
and you will never see revenue to make up for the expense. I would not do it,
not unless you're selling some kind of concours vehicle, for a commensurate
price.

Re: [MBZ] trust fund?

2019-06-01 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

2019-06-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would say it depends on what your expectations are for proceeds form the
sale. Don’t fix it and your expectations would be lower. If you made the
expenditures, would you be able to recoup any of the cost by enhancing the
value of the car? It wouldn’t cover the costs, but if spending $500 might make
it worth $750 more, you’re ahead of the game and you get the enjoyment of the
repairs for the remaining time you have it.

For that matter, if you spend $500 and it adds $200 to the value, you have to
consider if the remaining year would be worth $300 for enhanced enjoyment.

[MBZ] Care given to cars that will be departing

2019-06-01 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I am having a conundrum regarding the extent to which I need to continue
upgrading the SL. The car is slated to find a new home at some time in the
more recent future. Not just yet, but a year or so. I will be able to drive
it only for a limited time until then. There are a couple of updates that have
been slated to take place, but now are seeming to be beyond the need for me to
enjoy the car.

The hard top is pretty much optional, and I had no plan to fix the paint damage
to it. The soft top has exceeded it expected life span, but continues to do
its job as long as it is not subjected to extended precipitation, the plastic
windows being clear enough for use in foggy weather on chill mornings. Not the
most pressing need.

The exhaust repairs have been ongoing in fits and spurts for a few years. The
egregious leaks have been taken care of and the last bit of the puzzle was to
replace the pipe from the headers and the cross over H this summer. The rest
of the system is new and just wants the missing link, but this in now way
deters from the throaty sound or performance of the car (73 R107). Is it
really required at this point if I am going to be putting fewer than 1500 miles
onto the clock prior to sale?

The rear shocks are showing their age. Again, these were going to be funded on
this years budget as was the exhaust. The right way would be to replace the
old Bilsteins with new. I would not replace with any other brand, but the car
rides fine with the old shocks. I would want the fresh ones at this point only
were I to hold onto the car for many more expected miles of my own personal
piloting.

The question for me is, do I spend money to make it a better car for the next
guy or just allow him to foot the bill and I enjoy the car as is?

Re: [MBZ] $500E500

2019-06-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Hope it works for you. I've used it to good effect many times. With a bit
of ingenuity you can use a pulley and a chain to alter the direction of
pull to pull down, up, in, out, etc, depending on where and how you rig to
pivot point, without doing damage to the panel being pulled out.

Worst case, I've drilled a 1/4 inch hole and used large fender washers with
an eye bolt and nut, to make a pull that would other wise not be
"reachable". Or, alternately, use a hot glue gun to attach a piece of
angle [aluminum is my choice] with a hole drilled to hook the cable. The
hot glue actually will take a pretty good pull which moves sheet metal. Use
a heat gun to heat up the glue and remove the pull plate and dead glue,
then reset and take your next pull [blind panels, can't get behind them].
The come along usually has about 3,000 lb max force, you won't need near
that much to pull sheet metal... so "tickle it into shape".

Damage to fender will be less when you massage the dents out of it.

It might be easy to at least get it drive-able if it is just a leaky air

What was bad about it, other than V6 isn't as smooth as I6, and the OM642 had
an issue with main bearings (apparently just the front one) and potentially bad

I don't think it's bad, per se, just not as robust as the inline engine. All

an electrical engineer somewhere that has been able to "fix" that.

somehow to get some clearance in there.  BFH time I guess once I jack it
up to get the tire clear.

I got home and started it up, it runs great and sounds pretty good,
throaty exhaust.  I thought I noticed a bit of a tick in the LF front
cylinder when I firsts started it up yesterday, maybe a plug or injector
or something, but it seemed to even out after a minute.  I shut off the
car and I could hear air hissing from the LF, I am thinking the
excursion blew out an air line on that wheel.  Will have to get it
jacked up so I can see if there are any dangly bits under there.   That
might be the main issue.

It might be easy to at least get it drive-able if it is just a leaky air
line, that could be fun to check out a 500, the guy said it was lots of fun.

The sound system in it is pretty awesome.

Another project... I think I will document it on video and become one of
those utubers that makes a lot of money off their vids. Kleb and I could
go into bidness together -- LowcountryOkie Acres Productions.

Re: [MBZ] Compressor or expansion valve?

2019-06-01 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

[MBZ] Compressor or expansion valve?

2019-06-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
The White Whale, aka 124.193, aka 1987 300TD.

I've got a hydrocarbon blend in the AC system now, and worse there is a
slight leak from the evaporator so the blend is probably off.

Last summer and now this summer, when the ambient temp is over 75 or 80,
and after I've been running the AC for fifteen minutes or so and once the
system is at about peak performance, weirdness sets in.

Vent temperature will be about 50 degrees, but then they rocket right up to
80 or 90 degrees and it blows hot for a few minutes, and then cools back
down to 50. Blows cold for a few minutes, then another blast of hot air,
and it goes back and forth like that until I shut the car off.

I used to think this was the expansion valve, but now I'm wondering if the
compressor is the fault.

I think I'm probably going to swap out both.

[MBZ] flood update

2019-06-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The measuring station just north of me as of 8am has dropped below flood
stage by almost half a foot. I checked the road about and hour ago and
the water has dropped quite a bit more but IMO still too high to try to
drive across.  Yesterday one of the neighbors said somebody else took a
pickup truck out and it got up over their hood but by that time they
were already committed and made it across.  I certainly would not be
willing to try that. That same neighbor came by with a lifted truck that
looked like it sat about 3-4 feet off the ground and he made it out
yesterday.

Re: [MBZ] I really can't understand how people in a certain fakebook MB group can be such morons

2019-06-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Joshua Page I’ve run 1000’s of
gallons of wmo and atf. Twin filters and a centrifuge are key.

No pump injectors or motors replaced. Mainly in my old fords and vw’s.
Had one Mercedes 300d that I would load up and drive back and forth from
Florida to Ohio. Ran straight rough oil and a reusable coffee filter.

But that one needed a pump before I bought it. Wouldn’t run worth a shit
unless in wmo or veg. I’m assuming the pump was so bad it it needed the
thicker oils to build pressure.

But yet again bought it bad. And it only really performed well because
of a thick mixture.

Suggest an experiment. Make a couple burn cups from old soup cans. Pour
equal amounts in each, one diesel fuel and one used motor oil. Just an
ounce or so. Cans need to be squeaky clean before you start.

Burn up both the fuel and the oil, use a propane torch to get them going.

Rub your fingers in the bottom of the can when the fire is out, see how
abrasive it is.

I see these declarations that people send in to the County Clerk to notify the
clerk that they’re a “sovereign citizen” and not subject to the laws and other
stuff that normal people are. They’re usually an 8-10 page rant with all sorts
of flowery Latin phrases and other bizarre stuff.

Apparently, part of the process is to have these claims recorded by the local
clerk so you’re on record as being a sovereign citizen, then no one can make
claims against you and you can tell the government to piss off.

Yeah, I wonder how that works out for them long term…they do make a good read,
however.

Crankshafts aside, what you’re seeing is a slow speed diesel engine, most
likely, Commonly used on seagoing vessels of significant displacement, a lot of
the valve train is often exposed, so you’ll see pushrods, rocker arms, etc. all
moving around as the engine runs. These things run at extremely low RPMs, like
in the 400-500 RPM range.

On large ocean going vessels like container ships, these things are large
enough that they have doors on the sides of the crankcase where you can walk in
to inspect the engine.

Both rat (black) snakes and corn snakes are common here. Corn snakes are often
confused with copperheads, unfortunately. One way to tell if you’re close
enough is that venomous snakes have slit eyes, like a cat. non-venomous snake’s
pupils are round.

I’m not sure i would be keen having one in my attic, but my ceiling is sealed
up tight so I wouldn’t be worried about it getting into the living space.

And again, as Don and others said, it wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t a food
source. I would much rather have a snake in my attic than mice or rats.
