"electric jet"??? If its elektrick, it is NOT a jet. If it is a Jet, is is

Startup plane manufacturers are edging their way into the aviation market
by way of short-haul electric aircraft that could inspire technology for
all-electric commercial air travel in the not-too-distant future.

Eviation Aircraft is one of them; the Israeli startup announced last week
that Alice, its first all-electric plane, will take flight in 2022. Alice
planes will carry nine passengers up to 650 miles and currently sport a
hefty $4 million price tag.

"It's exciting for us that these big manufacturers and startups [are]
looking at this possibility," said Chris Goater, assistant communications
director at the International Air Transport Association. "We believe it is
feasible for short-haul electric jets to be coming to the market by the mid
'20s [or] '30s."

A handful of other manufacturers join Eviation in a push to move the
aviation industry away from jet fuel.

The Ampaire 337 is a six-passenger hybrid aircraft, which completed a
landmark test flight earlier this month in Camarillo, Calif. The company
plans to fly regional commercial routes in Hawaii and is also working with
Puerto Rico-based airline Vieques Air Link.

JetSuite, a luxury travel agency, announced in October 2018 it will buy 100
ZA10 12-passenger planes from Washington startup Zunum Aero. Another hybrid
aircraft, the ZA10 cuts emissions by 80% compared with conventional jet
fuel and is slated to begin test flights in 2020, according to the company.

And Faradair, a U.K.-based hybrid aircraft manufacturer, anticipates its
18-passenger plane will first take flight in 2022.

But Eviation's Alice plane, which premiered last week at the Paris Air
Show, stands out, observers say. For one thing, its all-electric engine
sets it apart from hybrid-producing competitors. And its nine-passenger
capacity and purchase by Cape Air make it a landmark model in aviation
electrification.

"The demand is there and is growing, so we would expect other (larger)
plane classes to move to electrify their fleets, just as what's happened in
ground transportation," Eviation spokeswoman Michelle Spita wrote in an
email to E News. "It just makes economic sense."
'Something's gotta give'

Commercial aviation currently makes up 2% of global carbon dioxide
emissions and accounts for 12% of all CO2 emissions from the transportation
sector, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation.
Such statistics spurred the industry to aim to cut net emissions in half by
2050, according to IATA.

Electrification is a bold step, as the aviation industry has historically
relied on biofuels and carbon offsets to improve its environmental record,
said Dan Rutherford, director of the aviation program at ICCT.

"The cracks in the foundation of that are starting to show," Rutherford
said, adding that manufacturers are now considering whether these methods
are reducing CO2 as much as they should be.

Demand for air travel, meanwhile, is still growing, Goater said, which
makes cutting the industry's carbon emissions more difficult. Some
developing economies, like in Latin America and East Asia, are now at a
point where residents can afford to "fly, explore and do business in ways
that people in the West do," he said.

"Growth in Europe and North American markets will be more subdued because
they're more mature markets," Goater said. "But there will be continued
growth."

ICCT estimates that at current rates, the number of commercial flights —
and the emissions from those flights — will triple by 2050. "Something's
gotta give" if the aviation industry wants to continue reducing its carbon
footprint, Rutherford said.

While all-electric planes like Alice are innovative and promising in the
long run, Goater and Rutherford emphasized the industry still lacks the
technology needed to power commercial jets by battery alone — Rutherford
said the weight of batteries that could power large aircraft would be too
burdensome.

"Hybrid electric aircrafts are a way to get around the battery weight
problem," he added.

But partnerships between smaller and larger manufacturers do have the
potential to propel electric innovation — and production — forward,
Rutherford said. In the meantime, Goater said, the industry will continue
to leverage hybrid models, aerodynamic design, biofuels and offsets to
minimize its carbon footprint.

"These programs that are coming forward are exiting, fantastic," Goater
said. "But we're not relying on those."

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electric airplanes

2019-07-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Andrew,
How about creating zero emissions cities? The real cause of worldwide
pollution is the intense people density of city dwellers. The extreme high
concentration of people, with their cumulative pollution density, of all
types, is having a huge effect on the world atmosphere, soil condition, and
resource depletion.
Yet, no one in the "green energy" crowd addresses this root cause. To many
people packed into cities using millions of tons of materials which
cause pollution to produce and when used. Remove the demand, let the
prairies and forests regrow. But, no, that approach is ignored. Instead,
focus on mouse fart control, or something equally not focused on the root
cause.
You are a smart guy, where is the off switch for big cities and population?

[MBZ] NAPA Mobil1 Special

2019-07-01 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I just received an email from NAPA describing their Mobil1 oil special
at $4.99/quart.

http://link.mailing.napaonline.com/t.d?M5fAunEnwunkxmAWEH65OdyEOGfyqeCz30gggZn7OU9qYtTBjhwHfvA47OmUDBC3xD_n1x-ugYxErlb24OHqhGq-K-iPnukbko26vHeIzLiOm050yjXYdKL7hAP3pPyG.enc=web

I think WallyMart might be cheaper on 5-quart jugs, though.

Peter - this seal was new about ten or twelve years ago, and now it is time
for a another new seal (my other 124, the '95 E300, just had the compressor
shaft seal expire and then got all new seals for that compressor).

Just took a peek, with the help of a UV light, nice green dye glow from the
oil gathered on the compressor nose.

Going to check for stock with the best FLAPS, an independent place, and if
they don't have it then I'll be ordering a seal kit from Century air...

Actually, you should call them remote emission planes, but the problem is
the energy density of batteries vs fuel. As Grant stated, weight is the
opposite of lift (flying). The more weight, the less flying you can do. So,
keeping weight to a reasonable value with batteries means very limited
range/speed.

If Valvoline says Maxlife is suitable for 236.10, 236.12, and 236.14, I might
stick it in a 722.6 if I'm out of Shell 134.

If Castrol says their 'universal CVT' substitutes for NS-2, NS-1 and NS-3 plus
two dozen others, I'd be insane to take their word for it. If NS-3 was safe to
use in her car, Nissan wouldn't still be selling NS-2. (like Dexron III and
Dexron VI, you can't buy III at the Chevy dealer any more because VI is
backwards compatible)

CVT lube is rather exacting stuff, and if your belt slips on the pulleys just
once you've ruined the transmission.

She noticed a shudder in the engine/tranny when slowing down and coming
to a stop.  I looked up this issue on the googs, it seems to be
something common with the CVT trannies, some think it was a damaged
transmission.  Nissan seems to say it is "normal" whatever that means,
and did some reprogramming of the idle speed or something in some
cases.  I kinda think it might be some aspect of the torque converter
locking or unlocking, if indeed it has that arrangement, or something as
to how the CVT responds to low speed or stopped.  I don't think it is a
big concern, at least I hope not, but she was going to take it to a shop

Forester or two at this guy's lot who sells only Subarus.  He had a
couple but they were in same price range as the one we had looked at
Friday but not as nice and he wouldn't haggle as he was moving those

She called the other guy, we were going back to get the one we saw on
Friday, but someone had just come to buy it.  Bah.  So she starts
looking on her phone, finds one in Savannah in the same price range,
looks OK in the pics.  So we head to Savannah, about 2hr away.  (Benz

We get to the lot, the guy was gonna meet us but his wife had some
crisis so he took off.  Vehicle was not as nice and similar price, and
this kinda orange color which she didn't like.  So she looks again and
finds another one listed about a mile away at another little lot.  So we
go there, the car was a lot cheaper but had lots more miles, was OK

I knew nothing about these vehicles, but seems OK, AWD, is the higher
end model with some extra options, was very clean, carfax showed it had

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electric airplanes

2019-07-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Logic impaired engineering, IMHO The hard rule in aviation, the one
that permits an airplane to fly, is "Weight is your enemy" always... if you
can leave an ounce on the ground, you fly higher and longer...

A charged battery weighs the same as a discharged battery, thus, when you
have no more electrons to run your electric motor to drive the props
which supply energy to move the airplane through the air, which generates
lift you get to drop like a lead brick, out of the sky... or put the
nose down to gain lift and lose altitude, just prior to impact the the
ground.

OTOH, your Jet A fuel tanks, when empty, weigh less that when full and
you don't have to dive so steeply to generate lift, which "could" keep you
flying long enough to make a safe landing somewhere... maybe.

Of course, it's not all that simple, nor do I intend to imply it is... but
the principles of physics are. How those principles are applied keep
engineers employed by those with money to spend.

Re: [MBZ] OT so my friend bought a car yesterday

2019-07-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
In my experience (2000-era cars), Nissans are reliable and mostly
trouble-free, if a bit "tinny" in construction. Watch out for rust if
you are in an area where salt is used. Keep an eye on oil levels, they
don't have a lot of excess in the sump. My Frontier V6 takes less than 4
quarts for a change w/filter.

Re: [MBZ] Evapectomy

2019-07-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well I believe I may still have a leak somewhere. Prime suspect is the
shaft seal on this compressor (just did the shaft seal / complete reseal on
the compressor in the '95 car).

I charged the system with 120 psi of CO2 on Saturday night, by Sunday
morning that had dropped to about 25 psi.

I put in a test charge of refrigerant, and sporadically my sniffer detected
a leak at the front of the compressor.

I've got plenty of the propane / butane blend on hand, so I decided to
press ahead and find out for sure. Swapped in new receiver / dryer, pulled
a vacuum for 30 minutes then let that sit for 30 minutes, it lost about
half a psi, dropping from 29.5 to 29. Another sign of a leak.

Put in the lost oil (60 ml)and hydrocarbon blend, and checked again for
leaks after letting it run for a bit, but only got one hit of sniffer alarm
at the front of the compressor, with repeated testing on a cycle at all the
various points around the system over about 30 minutes.

I'm thinking the shaft seal is the culprit, so another compressor re-seal
is probably in my future.

Last night during the test drive, the lowest observed vent temperature was
48 deg F. This a.m. on the drive to work I saw 50 deg F.

Getuftet. Proper tufting (as produced by the many, many Hispanically-owned
upholstery shops near my home) is less checkerboardy, a bit more creative. I’ve
never seen anything like that before.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electric airplanes

2019-07-01 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

I'm confused.
The energy density of the batteries is too low for us to have electric
airliners, so instead we'll make partially electric airliners?

If the energy density of the electric power system is too low after you jetison
the jet engines, how does it get better when you retain the jet engines?

The only way I can see it being useful is if you can use regeneration to
recharge the batteries while descending, or maybe if you can use jet engines
optimized for efficient high altitude cruising and augment them with battery
power for takeoff and climbing.

[MBZ] OT: Electric airplanes
