There is a good bit of that in this group.
Jims submission (above) was about 240 highly detailed pages.

OK, point taken on high humidity. The solution to that is, instead of only
one, make several water traps in series. and keep them all drained. such as
this Youtube example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdxdbgeUUKA

It is home made and demonstrates the principle... I like using larger pipe
because it seems to work better for me, you get to pick how you build it.
Decades ago, I lived in the humid midwest, now in Az, a 30 inch rain means
it's 30 inches between the rain drops.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel fun

2019-07-27 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
The aero drag increases with the square of speed. You trade your fuel for
time.

One time I followed my uncle across south Dakota in my 1988 Chevy stepside.
It had a v6 but usually required a fill up somewhere on that route at
freeway speeds. His truck would only go 45mph, so that's how fast we went.
When we got home there was still half a tank of fuel left in my pickup - no
fill ups. That was an early lesson for me in the extravagance of speed.

Some dude was oohing and aching over my 85 wagon at the bakery this
morning. Kids were eating pbjs and we were sitting right next to the car.
He said something like "your wagon is spectacular", which of course it
isnt. I told him all the value is in the stuff you cant see. (Well, it does
have new 15" Fuchs bundts on it and I washed it with the kids so it was
pretty shiny and it has new meaty tires and a new leveling valve kit so it
doesnt look all saggy butt like most of these cars do, but still). Anyway
people are in love with the idea of these cars, way more than the reality.
I guess that is what is driving the prices up.

You might sleep better at night after viewing this "Schedule 40 Pressure
Rating Chart"

http://www.heritageplastics.com/pvc-water-plumbing-pipe-east/pvc-schedule-40-pressure-dwv-pipe/

Those ratings might be lowered with factors such as age, heat, chemical
exposure, or other things like vibration cycles. However the margins are
quite high, considering average compressed air shop pressures.

THAT"s what I always thought, but if you keep pressure under 125, it

2019-07-27 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
As it turns out he installed a fuel shutoff valve because he was having
problems with fuel draining into the crank case when it sets. So what he would
do is close the valve then let it run till it ran out of fuel. I’m wondering if
the last time he used it he forgot to shut the valve. In any case I belief the
best course of action is to drain the crank case and refill, pull the plug and
blow out the fuel then see if it starts. If all is good then I will address the
carb.

2019-07-27 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
There are easy options for this. For my little horizontal tank (very close to
ground) I replaced the stock drain valve with one that's operated by a lanyard:
just pull until only dry air comes out. Also, Harbor Freight has a setup that
plumbs into the unloader to burp a little wet air from the bottom of the tank
each time the compressor stops. That would probably work well on a large tank
(with plenty of clearance) especially if it's used constantly.

[MBZ] OT lawnmower engine

2019-07-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
My father had this small 13.5hp Craftsman riding lawn mower. When he
went out to start it, it would not turn over.  It acted like it wanted
to.  I figured it was probably the battery was low, or had a bad starter
or solenoid.  He went and bought a new one because he was too lazy to
mess with it.  I hauled it off intending to get it going then sell it.
I checked the battery and it was not low.  I cranked it and it turned
over a little bit then stopped solid.  Rotating the flywheel back and
forth I could feel a spot where it was hanging up.  A little more
messing with it I could rotate it by had slowly thru that spot.  I then
checked the oil which seemed to be full of fuel.  So, it appears that
somehow maybe the cylinder is filling up with fuel.  Hopefully the
engine is OK but it appears I need to drain the engine and refill with
oil, and pull the spark plug and crank it over to blow it out. But, how
would fuel be getting in to that extent?  Could the carb be dumping fuel in?

I took "it" to mean the ball valve right at the outlet of the tank, which
is the last object before the "it" and the first after the "it". You
meant you leave the compressor on at all times.

Installing a ball valve in the tank drain (maybe with some pipe and an
ell) would be helpful in draining it. You might be surprised

My little two-wheeled, horizontal-tank Sears compressor has a
radiator-type drain valve on the bottom -- definitely not easy to use.
I have not added a ball valve because I plan to replace it with something
of higher pressure (it's a little hard to fill tractor tires to 100 psi
with a compressor which only goes to 100 psi; it's much hard to fill
trailer tires to 125 psi with a compressor which only goes to 100 psi).

Yes, that is exactly what The Shop in Moriarty has experienced. I have
not been around when a pipe let loose, but I have seen some of the
after-effects: not pretty. Their rented building was plumbed with PVC by
the building's owner.

I'm not sure iron pipe is the correct way to do it, considering how iron
and water do not coexist well, though galvanized would be better than
black pipe.

I think the correct way might be with copper ($$$) or lined metal pipe
(also likely $$$).

"Rule #1: Always drain the compressor tank at the end of each day you use

It takes too long to fill my 60 gal. tank from empty when I want to use a
tool, so I put a ball valve right at the outlet of the tank and leave it
turned on all the time, just opening the valve to fill the leaky air lines
when I want to use a tool or blow something out. Hence my tank probably

"[I use schedule 40 PVC 3 inch pipe as the water trap]"

3" diameter or length? My hangar is "plumbed" with PVC for the compressed
air, no telling how long ago, but I've always heard that it is likely to
explode sending plastic shrapnel everywhere. It would take 80 - 100 feet of
iron pipe to "do it right", which is why the PVC is still there ---

2019-07-27 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Rule #1: Always drain the compressor tank at the end of each day you use
it.
This will remove much of the water in your air system and keep the volume
at the lowest point.
Rule #2: Rig up a "T" fitting for the air hose with the air chuck fitting
at the upper part of the "T" [think a "T" laying down", Make the lower
part of the "T" long and large with a drain cock at the bottom. [I use
schedule 40 PVC 3 inch pipe as the water trap]
Drain this water trap before and after each use. Air goes up, water goes
down, principle.
I like the air fitting to be at least a foot above the water trap.

Total cost, less than 20 bucks in pipe and fittings. Unless you are really
pumping water instead of air, it should cover most operations.

https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-compressors-tanks/21-gal-25-hp-125-psi-cast-iron-vertical-air-compressor-61454.htmlThe
compressor is surprisingly good. It takes a long time to fill but works air
tools pretty good.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel fun

The V10 Dodge is in demand out here. I went looking once and could find lots
of Ford V10s but no Dodge...

Speaking of fuel, as some may recall I have a 1997 Dodge diesel that I dearly
love,
and with which I can get 25-26mpg on a highway trip if I take pains to keep the
speeds down.  I had bought a 1996 Dodge V10 as a parts vehicle for it, which
ended up being a driver instead.  It routinely gets 10-12 mpg.  (Usually not
12!)
The diesel is, for now, a camper-only vehicle.  Having a second truck is much
less 'puckery' and inconvenient than taking the camper on and off.

Due to circumstances we ended up taking the V10 on a cross-State trip, and to
attempt to mitigate the fuel costs I drove it much like I was on a mileage run
with
the diesel.  (The V10 has an automatic transmission, vs the manual of the
diesel.
Doom seemed the order of the day.)

On the Spokane/Tacoma legs, which includes crossing the Cascade mountain
range via Snoqualmie Pass, we got 14.6 and 15.3 mpg!  (The lower figure was due
to getting caught in an hour or so of stop-and-go traffic near Tacoma.  Bad
planning.)

I was really quite surprised.  The V10 has a locking torque converter, which
engages
at about 55 MPH, at 1500 RPM.  I kept speeds under 60 MPH.  Not bad for an 8
liter
V10.  (Specs are 300 HP and 450 lb/ft of torque.)  All you have to be is
patient, then
your fuel costs merely stink.

My wife seemed to be a lot more in favor of keeping this truck after this trip.
 It was
quiet and comfortable, and performed admirably.  And, the mileage was almost
tolerable.
But, I'll give her the choice.

With all the wildfires around AK and the attendant smoke troubles, I suspect
that clearing up the duff and other combustables would allow them to be used to
make “green” power instead of wasting kilowatts.  I think the same might be
said for a few other states (CA, MT, ID, OR, etc) with mandates for “Clean”
energy.

SWMBA was out visiting clients in the bush.  Mines this time.  One was the coal
mine that provides some power for Fairbanks.  She had to cut short the trip due
to the smoke being too thick for a few of the planned events this week to take
place.
