Re: [MBZ] New Addition

2019-09-29 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
There is an old joke about a doctor who arrives home after a double shift only
to find his basement flooded. The doctor calls an emergency plumber who
arrives promptly. The plumber fixes the leak in about an hour and .hands the
doctor a bill for $700.
The doctor is floored by the cost and exclaims that even he (a doctor) doesn't
make $700 an hour. The plumber shrugs and says that back when he was a doctor
he didn't make that much either.

When you get right down to it, society needs plumbers, mechanics, farmers,
teachers, trash collectors, etc. a lot more than it needs lawyers, bankers,
stock brokers, government bureaucrats, etc.

Yes, Mitch. It shifts just how you describe with a non-working modulator or no
vac signal. When it’s floored, shifts are near redline and smooth, but very
firm if not floored. The PB booster works very well as does the shutoff. All
lines to the lock circuit have been capped. I’ll have to do plenty of
troubleshooting the vac lines for the locks if I can find my mighty vac.

One thing I forgot to mention is the employer matches up to $2k HSA
contribution.  I need to clarify but I assume that means if I put in at
least $2000 per year they put in $2000 per year for a total of $4000 in
the account per year.

to see how they would come up.  On the spread sheet I basically
calculated out what the cost per month would be based on premium, HSA
contributions etc. I also included calculations based on premiums plus
out of pocket max for the year.  That out of pocket max would be the
number we would hit if we used the plan up to the max.

If my line of thinking is correct, the monthly cost in yellow would be
what the costs would be if the plan was not used much and includes the
premiums, deductible, and HSA contributions.  Blue would be premium
plus out of pocket max.  This should include the deductible.  In that
case, HSA2 comes out a little cheaper.

If I am looking at this correctly, if the plan is not used that much
during a particular year, I get to basically bank most of the HSA
contributions.  But, if it happens during a year the plan is used to
the max, the cost does end up about the same with some savings over
the PPO with the HSA plans.  The one difference that could make a
difference is the PPO has an embedded deductible and the HSA is non
embedded.  From what I understand is with the embedded if one person
meets the individual deductible then the plan kicks in after that.
Once the family amount is met then it kicks in for everyone.  With non
embedded the family amount has to be met before the plan kicks is so
it almost seems to me the individual amount is irrelevant. All my
calculations were based on the family deductible and out of pocket max.

It worked for me for the last couple of years of the car's life until the

Re: [MBZ] Automotive Carpet Cleaner

2019-09-29 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
That's interesting about the peroxide and baking soda.

I'm getting ready to try and remove a coating of mold from inside the '83 300D
which apparently got enough water inside during the recent blowing rains to
make it humid enough that the whole interior was coated with white mold.
It hasn't been on a long time and wipes off with a little elbow grease fairly
easily using 409.

Internet websites say that peroxide is the best mold killer, and a solution of
one cup of borax powder in a gallon of water, sprayed or wiped on and left to
dry will prevent future mold growth.
The only concern is whether or not the peroxide or the borax solution will
bleach or damage the blue MBtex.
Anyone had experience using these chemicals on MBtex?

[MBZ] 190D update

2019-09-29 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I fiddled with the 190D a little today.  I pulled the fuel tank sender
again since it was showing empty.  It appears it reads correct till it
gets to half way then drops all the way down.  I do no really know what
else to do with it.  I tried the other one and it reads empty all the
time no matter where the float is.  I guess my only thing left to do is
find a good used one or buy a new one.

I checked the resistance of the evap temps sensor directly from its plug
behind the battery and the measurements are off, so I guess I will just
replace it then maybe the compressor will not run constantly.

[MBZ] 91 350SD update

2019-09-29 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
As a refresher this is the $300 91 350SD I picked up that the PO said
engine was hydrolocked.  Ran fine when parked at work then when they
came out it would not turn over. I put breaker bar on crank and it would
not turn forward or reverse.  Engine is very clean and has plenty of oil
in it.  Oil looks like normal diesel oil, not fresh oil that might have
been added after it was ran dry.  I pulled the valve cover and chain is
not broken and nothing is going on up top.

Today I removed all of the injectors.  #1 was somewhat oily on the
bottom.  The rest were dry.  After pulling the injectors engine is still
locked tight.  I then removed the vacuum pump suspecting it exploded.
It was the original style but appears to be intact so I do not think
that was the issue.

I do not think it was ran out of oil because it has oil in it. The PO
did mention IIRC that it was using oil and/or coolant. Maybe it flooded
with coolant then rusted the pistons.  Or, maybe the #1 rod broke and
that locked it up.  In any case, it appears an engine tear down or swap
is in its future.

Just take off the passenger side under dash panel and it comes out with
like 3 screws. The brushes wear a groove in the rotor or whatever it is
called and lose continuity. A cheap test is to push up on the exposed axle
from below with a screwdriver handle. It moves the rotor enough to make
contact and the motor will start to spin if that is the issue.

2019-09-29 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah, underemployed opera singer. Great baritone voice. Perfect for radio
and tv.

I love his story about the septic tank guy. They are putting one in a hole
or pumping it and Mike says what's the secret to your success and the guy,
who owns his business and is a multimillionaire, thinks for a minute and
says "everything I have is because I looked around at what everyone else
was doing, and did something else".

I think there is a hustle factor in all those successful entrepreneur guys
though, and some good people skills and street smarts. That is tough to
teach.

Be interested to compare notes on the 648. Mine is all factory ecu in a
123. Figure the rest of the car is easier to maintain, but who knows.

I bought it at Home Depot but I’ve seen it in some supermarkets. It’s an
enzymatic cleaner that has no odor and doesn’t require rinsing. Really
remarkable stuff.

On another note, some other tenants left a white Brooks Brothers dress shirt in
my size in another rental. It was “permanently” stained by presumably sitting

 https://www.bissell.com/little-green-portable-carpet-cleaner-1400b

I had a case of Diet Coke in the back of the wagon a few weeks ago, and
one of the cans got cracked and leaked out all over the cargo area. I
tried using spray carpet cleaner to clean up the mess, but it didn’t do
 much.

I loaded this little Bissell thing with some of their juice and hot water
and it sucked all of the crud out of the carpet in one pass. I was able to
do the whole cargo area with one tank. It’s nice and small and easily
portable. I was quite impressed. I’ve got a big carpet cleaner for the
house that has a hose and nozzle for cleaning stuff like stairs, but it’s
a PITA to get out, fill, empty, etc., for use in a car.

I have always been on the watch for one of the small handheld steam
cleaners, but they’re rare as hen’s teeth. This is a nice alternative, and
while it may not be as good as a steam cleaner, it does a good job and is
 easy to use.

I’ve found Folex to be the best carpet cleaner period. I even use it on
clothes. Watch stains and dirt vanish in front of your eyes.

I rented a commercial machine to clean a light tan carpet which was made
utterly filthy by a really bratty entitled group of college student tenants. It
took me about 5 hours of multiple passes with very limited results. I then
decided to try Folex. I sprayed it on, agitated it with a microfiber rag and
both the stubborn stains and dirt completely vanished within minutes. No
exaggeration here!

If the modulator isn't working or isn't getting a vacuum signal, the trans will
shift hard enough at full throttle all the time. In other words, it'll feel
right with your foot on the floor and shift hard otherwise.

Do the power brakes work?
How about the power door locks?
You might have a big vacuum leak in the door circuits.

Mitch.

[MBZ] Automotive Carpet Cleaner

2019-09-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I snagged one of these Bissell “Little Green” carpet cleaners on my local
Facebook Marketplace for $10. Figured it would be worth $10 to try it out.

https://www.bissell.com/little-green-portable-carpet-cleaner-1400b

I had a case of Diet Coke in the back of the wagon a few weeks ago, and one of
the cans got cracked and leaked out all over the cargo area. I tried using
spray carpet cleaner to clean up the mess, but it didn’t do much.

I loaded this little Bissell thing with some of their juice and hot water and
it sucked all of the crud out of the carpet in one pass. I was able to do the
whole cargo area with one tank. It’s nice and small and easily portable. I was
quite impressed. I’ve got a big carpet cleaner for the house that has a hose
and nozzle for cleaning stuff like stairs, but it’s a PITA to get out, fill,
empty, etc., for use in a car.

I have always been on the watch for one of the small handheld steam cleaners,
but they’re rare as hen’s teeth. This is a nice alternative, and while it may
not be as good as a steam cleaner, it does a good job and is easy to use.

Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D shakedown cruise

2019-09-29 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
That's a good report!

I wouldn't worry about the compression test to much, if the engine fires right
up when cold, the compression is fine. I'd spend the money on a used engine
oil analysis.

Engine miss at hot idle could be an injector issue, or more rarely a problem
with a delivery valve.

Odometer / trip meter could be a simple slipping gear.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition

2019-09-29 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Some kids are college material and some aren't. IMO, it's criminal to conn a
kid into running up tens of thousands of student loans to "study" useless stuff
that will not make them employable.

I think there are two systemic failures in the current US educational
establishment: the kids never learn to deal with failure and they never learn
to think.
