You don’t need to be a die-hard gearhead to appreciate what goes into,

But being a die-hard gearhead probably helps. :-)

2019-11-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Back in the day, the only thing that annoyed me was the frod had the key
on the left side of the dash, while shovey (and MB) had the key to the
right of the steering wheel   (Talking Pre-1968 here)   Then there were
IH trucks.   Some had left side key, some right side.   I found that
even more annoying than switching between frod and shovey.

I did get trained to the MB way of doing things. That was on the w115
with no bells or whistles. Nothing automagic to mess with, analog all
the way. One of the friction points with the w220 was the addition of
dingles and dangles to complicate the experience.

Before the Benz, there was the confusion of adjusting to how the “new”
car wanted things done, as we changed brands with each car, in search
of a viable/reliable marque. I found Mercedes of the w115-w124 era to
fit that mold.

In future, the cars will be engineered beyond user interaction. Just
get into your rolling coffin and arrive at your destination.

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh! (Welder question)

2019-11-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
You are measuring junction voltage while conducting a dribble of current. The
voltage drop across the junction is largely irrelevant, other than that the
smaller it is the less energy is wasted as heat. This might matter in some
kind of sensitive analog circuit, but this is a brute force power application.
Junction voltage varies with the current through it, the junction temperature,
and the exact chemical process details. There is no single number to measure
or compare.

If it works well, great. It's possible that your new diodes are just better
than the old, or that the failing one had partially failed for some time before
it died. Hard to know. Chances are that you only had to replace the one dead
one to be fully back in business.

expected to have memorized the manual before you drove the car. The
controls were unchanged (IIRC) all the way through the W124's - and mostly
the same in the ML320.

2019-11-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Our deer season is broken into two parts, the first two weeks of December are
shotgun, then the second two are muzzleloader. Interestingly muzzleloaders can
be rifles but no cartridge rifles are allowed.
As with roundball hunting shot placement is critical. Slugs and roundball
should go in the "engine room", the lungs or heart. As you've found they don't
do well with bones. I recently read a history of the 1953 Enfield rifle which
was the first rifles musket in general use. At the time there was much
discussion about the destructive capabilities of the Miné ball vs roundball.
During muzzleloader I'll be using 450grain "Buffalo bullets" out of my .54.
Those go into the shoulder and break the hell out of whatever they hit.Actually
when I'm hunting alone I'll probably always carry the muzzleloader, it's much
more accurate and fun to shoot than the shotgun. The guys in my hunting group
already think I'm weird, no need to remove any lingering doubts...

I'm not a big fan of slugs. I had an experience of zero penetration from a Rem
12 ga. slug fired from my 870. It struck a good-sized whitetail buck in the
shoulder at about 45 yds. It flattened the slug to the shape and size of a
silver dollar, and slid up to the neck just under the skin on the near side.
The buck fell away from me, and the second shot hit the heart.

I will be impressed if the new trigger turns that pattern into a group. If
rifle is legal in your area, that other group will put venison in your freezer
for sure.

That's 50 yards with a rifle I hadn't shot for at least 20 years.
The big holes are indeed 12ga. I put the trigger kit in it today. Trigger pull
is much nicer now. I need to find time to get back to the range and try it out.

Spent over two hours shooting clays this morning with folks from work. Did
well, dusted a lot of clays, had some quality social time with coworkers. Even
got my shotgun cleaned this afternoon after I got home. A beautiful day for it,
too, high 70s, no humidity, clear skies.

One of our group had a brand new Mossberg 930 they were breaking in. I’m not
big on semi auto shotguns for clays, but it was a nice gun and shot well.

Dick’s has shotgun ammo on sale right now instead of during their Black
Friday/Thursday sale as they have in the past. $2.00 off a carton of Remington
12GA shells. Guess I’ll be heading up there tomorrow with the ML or wagon to
load up for next year.

The meter has (or mimics) a constant current source. In the forward
direction, the current goes through the diode and biases it into
conduction. The meter then reads the voltage drop across the diode.

In the reverse direction with a good diode, there is very little current
flowing through the diode and the current source goes to its open circuit
voltage, typically causing the meter to read infinity or its digits to
flash.

I have come up behind a semitrailer with polished stainless doors when
the sun was at my back (headed west on I-40 in the early morning or
headed east on I-40 in the late afternon). It's a rather unpleasant
experience.

The trailer is in very good condition and is very desirable. It would be
very useful, but $60k is way above my current budget. In addition, I
already have a semitrailer and plenty of work to do on it, our Kenworth
W900B, and our '93 E300D.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention: I have already sent an email
about it to Samaritan's Purse's fleet manager.

How many diodes does it take to make a buzz box buzz like a buzz box
should?   In this case 12.   It no longer has a loud buzz, but buzzes

Jim,  You are undoubtedly right, however I figured balancing the
readings is like balancing the injector nozzles on a good Diesel.   I
took the 12 highest and closest between the new and old.

The reference I read said they should be .50 or above.  quibbling over
.49 or .50, I agree is not significant.  My meter could be off by .01
easily.   It is off my 2-3 ohms on the ohmmeter setting, I know.

ordered the bag of 10 in place of the bag of 20 by mistake.   I am about
to set to testing diodes.  I have to decide if I should replace just the
one that is bad, or replace 10 and reuse 2 old ones.   I had intended to
replace all 12.   As soon as I segregate bad from new and good, I'll
start putting humpty back together again.

Then, I hope the melting steel begins again.    No old microwaves to use
though.   Sorry Jim.

But if I hang around Jim and Rich long enough, I may start designing
circuits sometime.

(Actually in the 80s, when Revent wanted $200 for a timer buzzer, I went
to radiojunk and bought 12vDC buzzers and transformers and full wave
bridge rectifiers and built my own.   THat way I could make each oven
have a distinct sound so we could tell from a distance which oven had
timed out.  There were 3 double rack double chamber revents and 3
rotating ovens.    We had one guy that was deaf, so I added a red rotary
light to one oven for him as a visual timer.)

Re: [MBZ] OT - User Friendly

2019-11-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
As I pointed out last week regarding color of handle covers on pumps for
Benzin and Diesel, the industry should standardize voluntarily, as the
motorcycle industry should have in the 20s.  That way the goobers stay
away. Thankfully, after WWII, hardly Davidson got rid of the left
hand operated gear shift on their motorsickles.

In the US, we had SAE  and other voluntary (industry) standards.   My
cars built under DIN standards are excellent.   Whitworth, not so
much.   Unfortunately, DIN was abandoned to adopt the frog backed ISO
standards.   ISO has goobers involved, so everything is messed up.   Up
to W123, I could work on any german made vehicle, and most german made
equipment and only need 10, 13, 14, 17 and 19mm wrenches and sockets,
along with 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm allen wrenches.   For exhaust 12mm was
added.   My BMW R75/5 added a pin wrench for the fork tubes, and a
larger socket and a spark plug wrench. (supplied in tool kit)   Life was
good and life was simple.   In 1985,  you had to add the special socket
for the delivery valves on MB, except you really didn't need one until
2000 to 2007, when the ULSD dissolved whatever was left of the DV orings.

Goobermnt meddling in anything but the enumerated powers is a bad thing.

Is government-forced standardization a good thing? In some cases yes, the
trade-off is probably worth the lives saved, like in this case. Where is
the line beyond which government decree becomes a bad trade-off?

If I'm judging the holes correctly, your offhand shots with the rifle
scored a bulls-eye and a 9. That is indeed impressive! What was the
distance to the target?

Are the two really big holes from the Mossberg?

Yes, that is a thought-provoking article. Designers driving behavior and
the good/bad calculation of that design: I submit that depends on designer
intent. Is the goal a safe car, or an addictive app on your smartphone to
sell advertising?

Re: auto design, and the friction point you describe. Is that friction
good because MB has you trained and now MB is the only answer to driving?
I despise most modern automatic transmission selectors, with strange
motions required to get forward or reverse or park. SWMBO's Infiniti
(Nissan) has the same headlight control on the turn signal stalk, and then
another stalk on the other side for wipers. Some rentals I've driven
combine the cruise control and rear windshield wiper onto those stalks,
more opportunities to get confused.

I guess we should be glad there is still one steering wheel and the two or
three foot pedals haven't changed position or function.

I do like some of the rental car seats which are all manual controls,
eliminating the switches and motors and wiring that my 124 cars have. I
would consider that an upgrade in usefulness if I could retro-fit those
type of seats and get the color / material to match.

If you're going to put a modern US engine in a W201 or W124, why not take some
weight off the front end and use a Ford 2.3 or GM 2.0?
Or, much better, an AMG 2.0?
