Continuous use of Top Tier detergent gasoline, or occasional use of
Shell V+Power.
V+ has twice the detergency of regular Shell, which meets top tier
standards.

So V+ has about 8x the federal minimums.
The federal minimums caused a lot of problems in the 1990s when they
were implemented, because a lot of brands lowered their detergent
levels to match the new government standard.

That prompted BMW, Honda and MBZ to get together and invent Top Tier.

I have never run any sort of additive in diesels unless there was a need
for gel prevention or something along those lines.  With gassers such as
the M112, is there every a need to run some sort of cleaner thru them
periodically?  If so, what cleaner and how often?

Is it Burl Ives?   Red Sovine and Marty Robbins were my first
thoughts.    I love Giddy up go and Phantom 309, and pretty much
everything Marty ever did. Somebody in El paso said that now
nobodyin ELPaso know who Marty Robbins is or "El Paso."

When I couldn't sleep at night as a kid, I'd dial in WSM after midnight
and listen to the music, but the interviews were the best.

Burl Ives Christmas songs are great!

the kids got me a used 4s when the 6s were new.   I still use it.  As
apfel continues to downgrade the fones each year by removing ports, I am
happy to move further toward the luddite area.   As long as Motorola
made flip phones, I was happy, as the sound quality with the blue parrot
headset was as good as or better than a land line.   Once Motorola sold
the fone biz to the chicoms, I am done with motorola.   Yeah, I know
they make all the fones, but they don't own all the companies yet.
They've just stolen all the IP.

[MBZ] Goodbye Polei?

2019-12-22 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I am getting down to the wire with depleting the hoard. About the only stuff
left for me to deal with on my own are the two cars and some old Apple/Mac
computer promotional items. I have been spamming the few brave folks who over
the summer removed the Benz items, but nobody has spare cash at this time of
year. I really do not want the poor SDL to spend another winter rotting in the
rain, not getting taken on the road.

The other day a fellow who snagged a bunch of my Mac stuff and the Newton
message pad came by to pick up the Newton manual I found in a camcorder bag. I
figured I could do no damage by mentioning the faux police car, and he said it
deserved some thought. I outlined the extreme project nature of the car, but
that it did all the things a working car does, even has working Becker radio,
AC and heat, brakes rebuilt with fresh ABS pump, and transmission shifts well
enough to chirp the tires. For a basic A to B car, it would be fine, while a
poorer person saved for a real car. This guy works for Boeing. Maybe he sees
some slack time in his future (737 max?) and just asked to set up a test drive
for monday morning. Looks like I am making a K’leb price deal

maybe. For the price, getting a bunch of spare parts to make upgrades or
repairs along with a driver seems like a deal to me. To get rid of it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cell Phones

2019-12-22 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Androids tie you into gulag and gummit spyware.   Ifone ties you into
apfel somewhat, but they so far have done a better job of protecting
personal data.  Apfel gives you and option to send data or not.
Gummit pretty much gets anything they want, legal or not.  Regardless of
platform.

Buy a cheep flipfone and get a minutes card with cash from Dollar
Genral.   That way you can be anonymous to some extent.  (at least as
long as nobody calls you.)

Merry Christmas!

They aren't.
Samsung models come chock full of bloatware, and iPhones tie you into
the Apple infrastructure. Apple may not be a bad choice IF you are already
a Mac head, but they are pricey.

I have a Moto G5+ that is several generations old now, and still quite fast

Dry side and a wet side. The local SEA DOT will try to get trucks out to spray
deicer on the main roads if they have a few days warning. Mild saline solution
of some sort that keeps mostly exposed bridge deck from icing over if temps
drop to 26f. Wet side tends to warm and wash away the snow and rarely gets
that cold.

Dry side has a rain shadow on the east side of the Cascades. Wind and cold
seep in from over the border of Canada. What minimal moisture can get out of
mountain passes will dribble on central WA. Spokane area is in the foothills
of the mountains making up the Idaho panhandle. Moisture backs up and dumps.

One of the most thrilling live songs I ever heard was the Sons of the
Pioneers (on many 1950s westerns, especially the singing cowboy
westerns) sing Ghost Riders.

They were in the Rodeo arena.

There are multiple versions of Ghost Chickens in the Sky
The one I remember:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ0M65i_D6w

A chicken farmer went out on one dark and dusty day
And by the coop he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a rotten egg hit him in the eye
It was the sight he dreaded: Ghost Chickens in the SkyTM

This farmer had these chickens since he was twenty-four
Working for the Colonel (pronounced "Kernel," eh?)(TM) for thirty
years or more

Raising all those chickens up to send them off to fry
And now they want revenge: Ghost Chickens in the Sky

A newer one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66vT4CMpCl4

An old cowboy went out and bought a ranch in '65
Spent all of his money and no cattle could he buy.
So he called up Colonel Sanders and asked, "What should I do?"
The Colonel said, "Buy chickens, and build the chicken coop."
Now he's been a chicken rancher since he was 24
Yeah, workin' for the Colonel now for 30 years or more!
Ah, fixing all those chickens up and sending them to fry,
now they want revenge.

Ghost Chickens in the Sky!
Chickens to bake, and chickens to fry.
Ghost Chickens in the Sky!

He was out a walkin' on his chicken ranch one day
He stopped along the chicken coop as he went along his way,
and all at once a rotten egg, it hit 'em in the eye.
It was, a terrible sight.
Ghost Chickens in the Sky!

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well the mystery deepens. Looking up a generic E300, instead of searching
by VIN, a different monovalve comes up, and it is forward compatible with
many later cars from 1995 up until 2011, including 210 E300 with OM606,
both turbo and non-turbo. Looking at the 124 2.5 models, 1991 used a
different type than 1992-1993. So perhaps there were two different
variations of heater / monovalve set up, some with a bypass and some
without, for my E300 and for other years. Perhaps it was a
climate-specific variation, or related to some other options?

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-22 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

Peter, I don't know how a bypass would help that. Maybe it encourages a
continuous flow through more of the hoses, keeping them warmer?

I'm recalling that Curley's 124 2.5 also has a bypass, I need to see about the
cost of that monovalve new and if it could fit my car.

Re: [MBZ] Cell phone update

2019-12-22 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

Yes, different phones are capable of different bands, so you need to compare
the carriers bands to your phones capabilities. That's one reason I moved to
this Moto G5+, it works on all the T-Mobile bands.

I also am able to surf internet while talking on phone, on T-Mobile.

I think you'll be happy, if you get a new phone.

Re: [MBZ] OT Chicken Attack

2019-12-22 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
There are multiple versions of Ghost Chickens in the Sky
The one I remember:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ0M65i_D6w

A chicken farmer went out on one dark and dusty day
And by the coop he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a rotten egg hit him in the eye
It was the sight he dreaded: Ghost Chickens in the SkyTM

This farmer had these chickens since he was twenty-four
Working for the Colonel (pronounced "Kernel," eh?)(TM) for thirty years or more
Raising all those chickens up to send them off to fry

I sure wish you spoke English :^)

I pulled up the snow fall maps from some government website for like the last
50 years.
If you draw a line from Washington DC to Nashville, then to Tulsa, you'd be
pretty safe to be purchasing a car with minimal winter corrosion damage.
Obviously the Southwest desert or Pacific Northwest is optimal, but shipping is
going to be pricey.

As far as corrosion prevention, Fluid Film, Wool Wax, and New Hampshire Oil
look like pretty good bets.

[MBZ] Cell phone update

2019-12-22 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I went ahead and moved my number over to T Mobil Friday to try it out
before moving the other 3 lines over.  On the drive back from Arkansas
it worked pretty good.  I only ran into 1 dead zone with lasted for
maybe a mile.  Then ran into 2 more closer to home with are also about
the same as we had with US Cellular.  Upon further research, T Mobile
spent billions buying up 600mhz and have been building those out.
Research shows this provides better coverage especially in the rural gap
areas.  I found a site that you can select a carrier and it will show
you on a map where their towers are and you can filter down to which
band  you want etc.  This showed me they had a 600mhz tower near the
dead zone spot I ran thru the day before.  The only thing is my iphone 7
will not pick up on these towers.

Yesterday I decided to go ahead and move the wife line over and went
ahead and got her the new Samsung Note 10+ 5g phone.  In the process
they had a deal going where we could add a 3rd line free and the phone
was free, so we went ahead and moved the 3rd line over at the same
time.  So this phone with wife got is 1 of 2 5g phones they have
available and it shows 5g at the top.  I will say when we tested it
after leaving the store in Tulsa the speed showed over 100MBs.  On the
other hand, my phone on LTE showed about 30MBs when testing at the same
time.  So, it seems maybe 5g is available in town.  I am thinking 5G is
still pretty limited.

On the drive home, the areas where I lost signal as before, the wife did
not with her new phone.  So picking up these new frequencies must
actually make a difference.  I would show no service on my phone and
hers would pickup about 3 bars or so. Even at our house here her phone
still shows 5g but only tests around 20MBs. My LTE phone tests about the
same so I would guess even if the phone says 5G, that might not be the
case.

Also, their plans include unlimited data (although slow data) and text
anywhere in the world.  Talk is 25 cents a minutes.  It is unlimited
talk, text, and 5GB of LTE data in Mexico and Canada. Also, our bill it
going to be about $100 a month cheaper than it was with US Cellular.
The guy at the store also gave me some sort of employee code that I can
go to a website and enter it to get 20% off the total bill for life.
So, if my okie math is working correctly the 4 lines that would be $170
per month will end up being $119 per month.  That is pretty darn cheap.
Hell I might even add a line for the 11 year old.

Anyway, just some data points so far for anybody considering T Mobile.

Might be related to the legendary chicken fairy.

Lyrics
Legendary chicken fairy big as life and twice as hairy
In our windows you'll come creepin'
Bringin' goodies while we're sleepin'
When you wish upon a bird makes no difference how absurb
The chicken fairy hears each word and all your dreams come true
Chicken fairy in the sky Mother Goose is butterfly
Do whatever's necessary legendary chicken fairy
Sing a song that's sanitary take my wish oh big canary
Legendary chicken fairy make my dreams come true.

My thought were essentially the same.  Wire wheel, paint, until I saw
what is in 188.   I don't think anything would break or come loose.  The
scale is just in a gusset and the metal between the hole and the
subframe is passable. If the only other choice was to buy a new
subframe, I'd reuse this one. But since a good subframe is available,
for nickels on the $, I think it is best to get a better subframe.

I've probably driven rustier cars than most of you.   It is why I
generally seek out a rustfree sample to start with.  The band from
Mallas to hotlanta is a good place to hunt for cars.   2 of my cars were
sold new at Autohaus Dallas.   One is quite rusty now, having been
driven too many winters in Awa.

I'm thinking "Scotchbrite rust and paint remover wheel, POR-15, paint,
done" until I get to #188.

188 would bother me if it were mine.

I have had the front springs break on the TE, replaced them a few years back.
It was driven on the beach at some point -- tiny sea shells in the covers on
the links :(.

Up in Canada broken coil springs were common, along with severe body rot.

I definitely would not use that subframe if you have a better one, it's pretty
far gone. None mine ever got more than some surface rust.

Karl,

I have looked on several of the Stealer parts sites, and it appears MB
has made a mess of them.   When I click on the link for "Brake" I get a
diagram of the steering column, etc.  Under parking brake cable, there
is a diagram that shows the "dust shield" but no way to get a part
number.  For the front, there is a diagram and part numbers for "dust
shield."   Maybe if someone has access to the real epc, they can find a
part number for the rear brake backing plates or "dust shield."

I have 2 new backing plates but I think they are a 210 part number.
Let me know what number you need and I will cross check it.
