Back in the '80s a pilot said that the reason homebuilts have so many accidents
is because the flying speed is so close to the stall speed.
Is that true, and if so, is the situation better nowadays?

Thanks to the efforts of Curley and Max and an afternoon Benzing, we
got new brake calipers and pads all around on the CD that has been in
the barn waiting for awhile. I still need to bleed them a bit, pedal
was spongy and wasn’t getting much braking. But that’s OK. They sent
me the wrong front hoses so I need to change those out too. Was a
gorgeous day, just right for a Benz day!

I drove it a bit, washed it so it’s looking good again. Needs a
transmission fluid filter change and oil too so will get to that soon
as well. Fired right up after sitting for a year or more, no telling
what’s in the tank but it ran. Smoky, needs a good hard run I think.

But progress! And thankful for good friends!

Angle of attack indication only gets you "somewhere in the ballpark of when

I don't know how close the KC-135 and the 707 are. Yes, the KC-135 engines
have been upgraded at least once, and they are talking about doing it again.

I found info on the windows 7 update error which walked me thru stopping
serviced renaming some files, doing some other command prompt items then
restarting. It’s now checking for updates. It’s possible no updates have been

Not very likely. I'm retired from Navy Reserve now. Retired from active duty
would be called before me. Army did that for the surge back in 2008, Navy did
not being back any retired that I know of, although they can always make
exceptions for "by name" recall if someone has a needed skill. They recalled a
bunch of retired folks when Reagan brought the battleships back out of
mothballs, for instance. There were no Gunner's Mates left who knew how to
operate those sixteen inch guns.

Dredging back into my less and less reliable memory, I don't think a KC-135 is
actually the same as a 707 -- I believe I remember that the 707 fuselage is
wider (and hence a completely different design) and last time I looked,
admittedly many years ago, the engines on the KC-135 had not been upgraded from
JT-75s. Hopefully they have been, as they are pretty marginal aircraft at low
speed with the original engines.

Last one I saw though was smashed at the end of the runway mimicing a pile of
junk at Andrews nearly 40 years ago.

There’s a refueling group at MacDill AFB here in Tampa that is all KC-135s, so

I was thinking more of the commercial versions, since they’re far rarer.

Here’s a picture of my youngest son in the “boomer’s” cradle in a KC-135. Don’t
