I’ve decided to take the leap and have a 111K mile engine installed
into Hildegard. My indy shop found it in Cali, and it should be
arriving by the middle of next week. The old engine was leaking from
the front and rear seals, and blowing it out the oil separator. Rather
than throwing easily half the money at this old engine with new
gaskets and seals, and half way to a complete R job, this engine
will be refreshed with all new gaskets and seals before it goes in.
They are going to rebuild the front suspension components that are bad
and fix the AC system. It’s going to cost about $6K, but it should run
literally forever or until Coronavirus kills everyone off. I know that
Pierre Hedary would be proud and happy that another W123 240D will be
saved!

Reading the fine print, I see that shipping is free west of the
Rockies and east of the Rockies they add a fuel surcharge, but it’s
less than $250.

Got any better options?

I think not. So quit your carping and being cheap and just call them
and buy one. It will be easy for a competent body shop to prep and
make it nice off the car.

Yes, that is what I have. Different brand, almost identical torque specs..
Amazing that the price for the 1 inch tool is nearly same as the 1/2 inch

fish tapes work well in long runs of conduit... The fiberglass rods work
way better when you need to push, as well as pull.   The fish  tape does
not push, inless it is in something like conduit.

dan--- via Mercedes
February 13, 2020 at 2:52 PM
I have a fish tape.

Ideally, I wanted to run the cable inside the aluminum soffit to the
center of the garage (soffit) and then do a straight shot (right angle
to front of garage) from that point across the garage to the utility
room where my data frame is located.

Getting the soffit open was more of an ordeal than I expected. This is
the standard perforated aluminum soffit that runs in a couple of
channels on each side. To loosen up one side I have to pull nails out
of the aluminum fascia so I can release that side of the soffit. Ugh.

Also, since there’s nothing above the soffit, I’ve got nothing to
attach the camera to, unless there’s a stringer in the corner, which
there probably is. If I could open the soffit I would just put a board
across it to provide a place to secure the camera mount.

I’m still not sure how I’m going to go about this. Grr.

The fish rods I have are each 6ft long, and thread together to
make it longer as needed. The snow markers could be really handy
for short pulls, but I also think they would be too stiff. The
fish rods bend. My 3/16 or so diameter ones work fine with a bend
radius of at least 1.5 ft [50 cm]. Maybe a little less.

Very handy tool, once you train yourself to use it properly.
I have the industrial version of it. Input and output is 1 inch drive, and
I use it to remove lugs on the bus and the semi tractors and trailers.
Torque on the bus lugs is 425 psi, which presents challenges. Three axle
bus, with inner and outer lug nuts on the dual drive wheels.. makes a "lot
of lug nuts".
I have 1 inch air impact wrenches, however, wheel changes actually go
faster by breaking loose the lugs first with the 1 inch torque multiplier.

[MBZ] A Heart Transplant for Hildegard

2020-02-13 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’ve decided to take the leap and have a 111K mile engine installed into
Hildegard. My indy shop found it in Cali, and it should be arriving by the
middle of next week. The old engine was leaking from the front and rear seals,
and blowing it out the oil separator. Rather than throwing easily half the
money at this old engine with new gaskets and seals, and half way to a complete
R job, this engine will be refreshed with all new gaskets and seals before it
goes in. They are going to rebuild the front suspension components that are bad
and fix the AC system. It’s going to cost about $6K, but it should run
literally forever or until Coronavirus kills everyone off. I know that Pierre
Hedary would be proud and happy that another W123 240D will be saved!

Reading the fine print, I see that shipping is free west of the Rockies and
east of the Rockies they add a fuel surcharge, but it’s less than $250.

Got any better options?

I think not. So quit your carping and being cheap and just call them and buy
one. It will be easy for a competent body shop to prep and make it nice off the
car.

Re: [MBZ] OT: IP Cams, WAS W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m going to poke around from the inside first so I know where all the rafters
are relative to the soffit. I suspect there would be a rafter in the corner all
the way down to the fascia. If so, it’s there behind the soffit, I just can’t
see it. If I can tell that the rafter goes all the way down, I’ll poke a hole
in the sofft t get my bearings and feed a cable through.

I’ve got this goofy double gable on the front of my garage, so there are all
sorts of beams and rafters in that area that make it near impossible to get
around in the attic space. If I can see down into the soffit fro that area, and
I probably can from a vantage point in the attic with a high powered
flashlight, I’ll know how to proceed…

Do you have, or can you readily get more of the soffit material in the
same color?
If so, I would suggest that you maybe just pop rivet a second layer of
soffit material under the existing layer. That will give you a double
thickness that will make it stronger.
You should not need to open up the soffit. Just make a hole to feed your
cable through and use the fish tape or get a set of the long rods like
the alarm installers use to push your cable through to where you can get
hold of it from the attic. The hole can be a fair size if you cover it
with the second layer of soffit material.
This is what I did on our house when I was installing some of the
satellite cable and needed a way to attach the cables and a ground to
the soffit on the way to the dish.

Re: [MBZ] OT: IP Cams, WAS W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-13 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
I have a fish tape.

Ideally, I wanted to run the cable inside the aluminum soffit to the center of
the garage (soffit) and then do a straight shot (right angle to front of
garage) from that point across the garage to the utility room where my data
frame is located.

Getting the soffit open was more of an ordeal than I expected. This is the
standard perforated aluminum soffit that runs in a couple of channels on each
side. To loosen up one side I have to pull nails out of the aluminum fascia so
I can release that side of the soffit. Ugh.

Also, since there’s nothing above the soffit, I’ve got nothing to attach the
camera to, unless there’s a stringer in the corner, which there probably is. If
I could open the soffit I would just put a board across it to provide a place
to secure the camera mount.

I’m still not sure how I’m going to go about this. Grr.

Also, there are many mild cases that don't progress to the deadly phase.
Older, infirm patients are at greatest risk, although some children have

You didn't keep it well enough oiled?

Difficult, I know, but spraying the heck out of it with oil of some sort
every fall certainly helps if you plan to drive it in winter weather.

I tried a whole lot of different things on my old Suburban. I used AT
fluid, Chainsaw bar oil, used engine oil, etc on the bottom and under
the fenders on the Suburban. Some was more successful than others but
all wore off over winter. I also used rubber conveyor belting in the
rear wheel wells to prevent the snow and crud from being thrown up into
the rear bumper etc. I had the rear AC lines corrode twice before I put
the rubber belting in to control the distribution of salty snow etc.
After that, the aluminum lines survived until I sold the truck.

With my current F150 I have had it sprayed by a shop that uses the Krown
rustproofing system every fall before the snow comes. They spray the
underside and in the doors etc. The oily, waxy fluid does not smell as
bad as some of the oils that I used to spray under the Suburban.

I have also used Fluid Film on vehicles to spray inside doors etc. It
has a bit of a peculiar smell at the outset and is not appreciated by my
wife.

Anybody count the number of times I have used "etc"?

Thanks, this is not looking good. Yesterday I saw a chart comparing SARS to
Coronovirus, number of infections over time, and by this point SARS was under
control and leveled off, whereas Coronovirus is still accelerating. Couple that

2020-02-13 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
WSJ reporting today suggests outbreak much worse than previously reported,
which likely means it is MUCH worse than is being reported. NYT reporting more
concerning than WSJ.

WSJ morning brief:

China ousts high-level officials as coronavirus cases soar. The removal of the
officials comes as Hubei province confirmed 14,840 new infections—an almost
10-fold increase from a day earlier—indicating that the epidemic is far from
tapering off.

World Health Organization draws flak for virus response. Public-health experts
have questioned whether the WHO has been too deferential to China in its
handling of the new virus. It’s a conundrum that threatens the agency’s global
authority.
Beijing pledges to stabilize economy.China’s top leaders vowed to stabilize the
economy as they attempt to keep the outbreak under control, offering tax relief
and other measures to keep jobs filled and ensure the country is stocked with
necessities.

Re: [MBZ] OT: IP Cams, WAS W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Interesting.

My Lorex system is sitting in a box next to my desk, where it’s been since
arriving in December. ‘m struggling with how I’m going to get cables to the
cameras that will go on either side of the front of my garage. My roof pitch is
such that I will have to crawl on my belly in the attic to reach the exit
points in the soffits. I’ve got aluminum soffits, so I have to deconstruct them
to mount the cameras, as there’s nothing behind them to fasten the camera bases
to. I have seriously considered mounting the cameras to the wall just below the
soffits, but the exterior of my house is stucco, and I’m not keen about
drilling into it to accommodate anchors.

I’ve decided that I need to resolve this over the upcoming weekend before the
weather gets too hot. Grr.
