[MBZ] W124 Diesel Lifter Noise

2020-04-25 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I know we’ve covered this before but this lifter noise was being all crazy
today. It was starting and stopping randomly... it was kinda quiet then crazy
loud... then suddenly gone...doing it at idle, doing it underway...total
randomness. WTF
I have about 4K miles on the M1 oil, oil level SAT, oil pressure SAT.

Jeez, Curt. That is really good.
The best I ever managed in any of TDI Jetta’s was 50.4. And that was an
automatic. My 2014 Passat did 45mpg @ 75mph coming back from San Diego in
October.

Thats about how I feel. Too much money and effort for the value of the
vehicle. I'm pretty used to just not having it. Gets a little sticky in

2020-04-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The wads are really thin and flexible. The gas sealing in black powder guns is
done with a cardboard wad over the powder (the "over powder wad"). Black powder
melts plastic wads if you don't protect them, makes a terrible mess.
I dunno if a 3D printer could make something that would work, probably? It'd be
cool if you could use a card wad as the base.

2020-04-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Interestingly Angie's '05 Gold has "ice cold AC". I haven't tried the cooler
on the 2010 RAM yet this year but it worked last year. My '03 Ranger cooled
well when we got rid of it in 2014. My '98 Jetta would hold a charge for a few
months but never made any cold air. I guessed the valves in the compressor were
bad. My '96 Dakota's AC failed at either the 9 or 10 year mark, I can't
remember exactly. It blew all the refrigerant out of the evaporator all at once
on a hot day in late May returning from camp in heavy traffic...
Of 5 MB's I've had only 2 had working AC and neither of those was very good. I
never had cars good enough to invest the time/money into getting the AC working
correctly...

I was being a little sarcastic in my question. In my experience any
"original" A/C system much more than about 10 years old will have
significant leaks. My W123 A/C leaks out in about a week after a charge,
and a good local MB indy here narrowed it down to the evaporator. My '04
Nissan won't hold a charge as of last summer. My long departed A2 Jetta
gave it up after about 7 years. The '06 Honda is still OK knock on wood.

Almost any 10+ year old car I see advertised at a price I'd consider
interesting has the standard "AC needs a charge" line and we all know
what that really means.

2020-04-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I am reminded that yesterday I had to go into the office. I took it slow to
see what my 2015 Jetta TDI is capable of. The 60 miles in returned just over
58mpg, the return got just over 55. I kept the speed to no more than 65 mph and
mostly 60. In fact I didn't think to try for a high mileage run until I was
already 8 or 9 miles into it, I could probably do better if I worked at it the
whole distance.
Interestingly on the way home I had a cop slide in behind me, I was doing 60 in
a 55 zone. I was amazed to see other cars zipping past us as he was obviously
running my plate. I had the cruise set and just kept it between the lines.
After I came up clean he moved on an nabbed another slow driver 3 cars ahead of
me...

[MBZ] R129 Rear Shocks

2020-04-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Changed the rear shocks on the SL500 this afternoon. Not a fun job, as the top
mount is behind a bulkhead with a hole about 3-1/2” in diameter to access them.
Thank goodness for ratcheting box end wrenches it went pretty quickly, maybe 30
minutes a side. Took me almost as long to remove all the covers and carpet as
it did to do the work.

Old shocks were the originals from what I could tell. Mercedes parts, paint
marks from assembly or so it appeared.

Tomorrow I think I’m going to tackle the S210 wagon fuel filter.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1989 Mercedes 300E 4 door Project car

2020-04-25 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Pumps and filter are not bad, I've been working on them since about 1983. In
fact, I changed the fuel pump in my old Audi Fox wagon in the parking lot when
I was checking out graduate school and it croaked, stranding me overnight.

You should check the current draw on the old pumps, if has been running high
the relay gets flaky.

Only thing to watch is that you have good connections! A loose or intermittent
wire will drive you nuts.

On the sedans, there are two pumps in tandem, on the wagon they are in series
and if one goes out you are dead. Happened to me, what a pain.

If the pumps are good, check the hoses and boot between the air flow
venturi/fuel dsitributor and throttle valve. Serious leaks here, or at the
hoses for the idle control valve, will result in hard starts warm, idle
problems, and stalling. Ditto on the last for a dirty idle control valve, it
goes completely closed on coast and if it sticks much, the car stalls as you
come to a stop.

Too many years dealing with this stuff, and I'm going to replace the injectors
on the wagon next week while I'm on part time -- I'm hoping that will fix the
mixture control issues and I will NOT have to rebuild the fuel distributor!

Greg's reply/suggestion made me wonder if you could 3D print the wads for
the muzzle loading shotgun? Is there a material that can be "printed" that
wouldn't melt in the barrel? Perhaps a layer of cardboard between the power

Point well taken.. however, I am a committed bottom feeder when it comes to
things like that.
After a closer look at the pics, I don't see the air bag was deployed.. so
perhaps a low speed impact... I do note front fender is tweaked at the
headlight, which is a replacement item.. fender should be straightened
easily.. might require removal to get good hammer and dolly access.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1989 Mercedes 300E 4 door Project car

2020-04-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It really depends. A lot of the issues with slow leaks revolve around the
original hoses, which become porous as they age. Since they’re not barrier
style hoses which are used now, refrigerant leaks out of them at the molecular
level. You can have a tight system, but if your hoses are original, it will
leak down over time.

The leak sealer I have used in systems like these is wicked awesome stuff, and
short of a leak like a shaft seal, which nothing short of replacement can fix,
it does a great job sealing the leaks or at least slowing them down
significantly.

I have a 1997 SL500 that's never had the system touched in the seven years I’ve
owned it and it still makes ice cubes like the day I bought it. The driver of
the car wouldn’t tolerate anything less, either.

Re: [MBZ] Needs a hood, fender, bumper cover, light

2020-04-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
If you master plastic welding and the use of a heat gun, that bumper cover
is very repairable.
Even the missing pieces can be replaces with other plastic salvaged from
another damaged bumper cover. You just cut what you need to fit the "hole"
, shape it by heating with a heat gun [wear gloves and play the heat gun
across the part until it is pliable, then mold it to shape to fit.
Then weld it in. [Low power Harbor Freight soldering gun with a flattened
tip works just fine]
The bumper covers are all thermo mold plastic, just use thermo mold plastic
to replace what's missing. I use plastic tie wraps as filler welding rod
[they are also thermo mold plastic]

When you are done welding, use the heat gun again [and gloves] to shape the
bumper to fit. Sand the welds smooth, fill with flexible body filler [there
is one to patch plastic bumpers] sand, fill, paint... done.. almost no
cost.

It will need a tire and rim also, looks like the mini spare is on car now..
which tells me the wreck damaged the tire, perhaps the rim..

Hood sheet metal will pull out with dent-less glue on pullers [make your
own with hot glue gun and some aluminum angle.. youtube how it's done..
Days work, looks like it should be good to go.

2020-04-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes

I test drove one once back in the '90s. Nimble, yet surprisingly boring
for a 5 speed manual. Now, they are almost extinctium.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
It looked like part of the front bumper was gone under the right corner. I
had the same thing happen reversing across a pavement edge.

I think the headliner is such a big item in terms of the value of the car.

These are really good machines. The m119 is just great, electronics aside.
My mechanic had a 400e in with the motor out recently. Loss of oil pressure
caused the timing chain to skip. The owner was having them rebuild the
motor. Mind you it had over 250k on the clock. The guy had no intention of
getting rid of the car.

Re: [MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Front bumper is OE but may need to be freshened up. According to the car’s
history, it’s been pranged in the front twice and stolen once. All with the
original owner. The first front end wreck was within a few hundred miles of
delivery! Dealer appears to have done the work on both instances. No stickers
on the radiator support = giveaway there’s been front end damage in it’s past.

Not only has factory CD changer but original Becker and they both work. This
setup is easily modified for an auxiliary input as well.

With only 113k on the clock the back end might not be that bad. We’ll see.

Engine harness was replaced by Mercedes some years ago. Lower harness and ETA
not that I know of, but they’re probably OK.

Yes, it has ASR.

Headliner will need replacement. My headliner guy will do it for under $200 as
a carry in. I need the headliner on the SL500 redone, too, so I’ll take both in
at the same time.

Yeah, I’ll be doing that. Saves the lenses if they’re not in bad shape to start
with.

Should be a fun project. I’m looking forward to it.

Cost was $649, doorstep to doorstep. Pretty much the going rate for open
transport from the Midwest to Florida.

I have a transport broker I’ve used for some years. He’s very good, has always
gotten me the best deals available and the shippers have always been top notch.

Great guy, I highly recommend. Be sure to tell him I sent you. I get nothing

The AG gave a bunch of online vendors the choice of signing a consent
decree and not doing business with MA customers or going through an
expensive court battle. AFAIK everyone thus threatened ran away as
intended.

How cheap are the bumper covers in your neighborhood?
I'd probably leave the hood alone. Didn't even damage the grille.

Yes, with about 80-90hp less than a 2.0L Chevy.
Makes about 3hp more on Premium than my (tuned) 1.4L Chevy makes on Regular.
Either that or MBZ underrated it (I hope).

Re: [MBZ] OT - Robot Vacuums

I can totally understand the more autonomous one for sure, after having the
“dumb” one. You do have to somewhat babysit it, as if things aren’t ideal in
the environment it can easily get tangled up or stuck.

That being said, it is amazing how it can get itself unstuck from various
situations.

The cat hates it. She’s convinced it’s after her food.

This particular model isn’t that “smart”, but it seems to do a pretty

So call me a convert. This doesn’t replace sweeping, but augments it to
