GDI is Gasoline Direct Injection, something relatively on the

It involved two trips to the dealership.

In the second trip they replaced it. Everything worked out well.

Re: [MBZ] A New Oil Specification for GDI Engines

2020-10-03 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Phillips/Kendall started shipping GF-6 labeled oil in April, which was
when the spec became official IIRC.
That was when the oil distributor told me that stuff meeting GF-6 specs
had been going into GF-5 bottles since about February.

All of which doesn't make one feel better about changing my oil with
some SN+/GF-5/Dexos1Gen2 Mobil One that I bought in August of 2018, and
then having my pistons fail 1800 miles later...

[MBZ] A New Oil Specification for GDI Engines

2020-10-03 Thread Craig via Mercedes
https://www.rockauto.com/Newsletter/

A New Oil Specification for GDI Engines
Tom's Story

This year brought us a new specification for motor oil; ILSAC GF-6 /
API SP. One of the primary goals of the new oil spec is to reduce
incidence of two problems gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have
been experiencing.

GDI blasts the fuel directly into the combustion chamber at high
pressure. This leaves less time for the air and fuel to mix together.
The resulting air/fuel mixture may burn unevenly which may generate a
lot of soot. As the pistons move up and down, the soot gets mixed into
the motor oil. The soot travels with the motor oil through the engine
and causes wear.

The most noticeable wear often occurs between the pins and bushings
that hold timing chains together. As the bushing holes wear and
enlarge, the timing chains stretch. Eventually the timing chains may
stretch to the point that they slip across gear teeth or otherwise are
unable to correctly connect the crankshaft to the camshafts. The
computer generates a trouble code, the engine goes into limp-in mode
and/or the engine stops running. GF-6 / SP oil resists collecting and
circulating the harmful soot. GF-6, API SP and API SN PLUS on label
GF-6, API SP and API SN PLUS on label

The second problem, low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), is also related to
the uneven burning of air/fuel in GDI engines; specifically,
turbocharged GDI engines. When running at relatively low RPM and under
heavy load, like when moving away from a dead stop, severe knocking may
occur inside the cylinders. Scientists figured out that traces of
engine oil mixing and burning with the air/fuel mixture contributes to
the damaging engine knock. GF-5 / SN-Plus spec oil was released a
couple of years ago to combat this problem (watch for the “Plus” after
SN). The new GF-6 / SP oil helps with both the soot and knock problems.

Ford has produced the most turbocharged GDI engines. Small 1L,
three-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engines power Ford Fiestas, and big 3.5L,
six-cylinder EcoBoost motors are in work trucks that rack up a lot of
severe-duty (towing, dust, etc.) miles. The soot and knock problems
have been studied most thoroughly on EcoBoost engines. The new
specification actually requires that new GF-6 / SP oils pass tests
running in Ford EcoBoost motors! GDI shown in description and Info page
GDI / Direct Injection in part descriptions and Info page

These new oils, higher fuel injection pressures, intake manifold port
injection coupled with GDI, etc. help solve these problems on older
engines and prevent them on newer engines. GDI engine owners may be
able to help the most by simply changing their vehicles' motor oil
frequently and always using the correct oil. Instead of waiting for the
longest, light-duty, oil change interval (often 7,000+ miles/11,000+
km), change the oil closer to the severe-duty interval (often 3,000
miles/5,000 km).

You can check to see if your specific vehicle's engine uses GDI by
looking at the “Info” pages and part descriptions for the engine's Fuel
Injectors found under “Fuel & Air” in the RockAuto.com catalog. Find
the correct engine Oil for your vehicle under “Engine.” Oil is also
listed by viscosity/weight under the “Tools & Universal Parts” tab.

Note: The “A” in GF-6A means the oil is a viscosity/weight compatible
with existing engines. The “B” in GF-B means the oil is only to be used
in recent engine designs that require completely new viscosity/weight
oils such as 0W-16.

Very strong, 300HP and 450lb-ft on the 8-liter motor, I _expected_ poor mileage

that's good to know.  I've only done mostly some rural/sorta in town
driving and it was only like half a tank, so will need to watch it as I
do more driving.

Interestingly enough, the 210 E320 and 211 E320 wagon both seem to do
about the same whether around town/country or road-tripping, 28 and 23
respectively, which is somewhat respectable.  The E300 dizzel was around
30 most of the time which was quite nice.  That engine in a wagon would
be great.  I wonder how hard it would be to swap it into a gasser 210 wagon.

That is one thing I never understood about the ML, why they seem to
get such poor fuel mileage.

Compared to my wagon, it's got a bigger V6 running at higher rpms, more
weight, worse aerodynamics, big truck tires...
Should all that add up to the difference between 28 mpg and 19 mpg? I
don't know, but I think I like the wagon better. It rides better too.

I can understand the ML500, but I would have thought the 320s would do better.
No doubt a lot of the energy is lost in the drive train.

A $1000 ML (assuming it doesn't need tires) would be a neat thing for
driving up to the cabin in Maine.

Geared for towing, large frontal area (about twice a sedan) and an order of
magnitude higher under-body drag.

Same deal as other SUVs and pickup trucks.

Probably rather high rolling resistance too.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2020-10-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And yesterday’s, too.

I’ve had a CEL on the 1998 S210 wagon for some time, P0400, which is the EGR or
related stuff. I replaced it for just that issue about 14 months ago, and the
CEL returned maybe 2-3 months ago. With minimal driving and knowing it wasn’t
anything significant, I just let it go.

As the weather has cooled off here relatively speaking, I went out last night
and spent some time poking around. Found the short U-shaped vacuum line between
the manifold connector and pressure transducer at the EGR was split at one end.
This would definitely cause a P0400 error, so I replaced the cracked hose and
reset the computer. It takes two driving cycles for the computer to decide
there’s an issue, so I’ll have to drive it a bit to see if the CEL returns, but
I’m optimistic the problem is solved.

Today I’m going to replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts. The ones
on the car are not original and not in too bod shape, but I have a set of
Lemförder mounts that are taking up space on the shelf so I figure i’ll put
them on. I need to replace the fuel filter, too, so maybe I’ll do that as well.

Yup. The ML500 was lucky to average 14mpg on a good tank. However, when you
mashed on that accelerator, it definitely stood up on it’s hind legs, so to
speak.
