Re: [MBZ] Contact Cleaner

2020-10-12 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You need a Dim Bulb Tester for this -- put a incandescent light bulb in series
with the hot side of the power plug. Unlike a Variac (which reduces the
voltage) the light bulb will limit the current, allowing you to troubleshoot
without frying anything.

The lamp should go bright as the filter capacitors charge, then go fairly to
very dim with no inputs and the volume all the way down. if it stays bright or
only slightly dims, you have a short somewhere.

Electrolytic capacitors have a defined life, and a Philco console is what, 55
or so years old now, or older? All the electrolytic caps need to be replaced
-- as they dry out they become resistors (or worse, shorts) and not only do not
do what they are supposed to but can actually cause current drains or damage
transistors.

I just revived my 1980 Kenwood KA-80 this year, at long last, had several blown
zener diodes and a shorted Darlington Power Pak output module. Couple of the
transistors driving the output module were bad too, and I still have issues
with the phono pre-amp I will need an oscilloscope figure out.

If you don't have good electronics skills, best to have a professional work on
it. A lot of those transistors (especially germanium ones) are no longer
around, even on eBay and the dark recesses of old parts supply places. It
would be a shame to fry something by accident that's unobtanium, rendering the
console useless.

Willing to believe it's the tires, however I also feel like the asphalt
used around here is somehow very slippery. Even on just a rainy day I'll
get wheel spin driving up a slope, or starting uphill at a 4-way stop.

Once in the winter I was driving back home from Nashville, IN in my

curving downhill grade at one point. Familiar with it, I crested the top

I am also somewhat into old console stereos. I have one I bought at a thrift
store we i was about 14. It is a fancy maganvox and as far as I know still
works. Have not fired it up in many years. I also have my grandmothers RCA from
about 1968 that I used to listen to when I was at her house. I was playing it
one time back in about 1991 when it made a loud popping sound and no longer
worked after that. She had it checked out and it needed some transistors
replaced I believe. She didn’t want to spend the money on it so it’s not been
used since. I would really like to get it fixed but do not know anything about
replacing transistors and not sure where to find anybody to work on it.

They were only incompetent in schnee because they had bad tires on. The

As Jim says, tires and weight in the right places are key, as with any

My 123 went everywhere in the schnee (Farstone schnee tars)
My first SDL, when I put used Blizzaks on all 4 corners was like driving
on dry pavement, until the schnee gets so deep the body floats, causing
the tires to lose contact with the road.   Uphill, down it did not matter.

Tires!  The most important insurance policy for your vehicle!

Daughter's 124 vergasser on Blizzaks was also unstoppable in schnee.

My W115 was great in the snow. Proper snow tires, and maybe
a little bit of trunk weight, are the keys. For the hills, you also need
some brass balls sometimes. Momentum going up the hills is a
requirement.

Re: [MBZ] Learn something each day

2020-10-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Vast majority of hard cider/ sparkling cider and what is sold as grape
"champagne" is wine carbonated like soda water.  (Artificial carbonation
= large bubbles))

Real cider (As the English call it) is naturally carbonated in the
champagne process, (A second fermentation in the bottle) (Natural
carbonation = tiny bubbles, as in Don Ho)

My apple champagne is apple wine subjected to the champagne process.
(second fermentation in the bottle)  With live yeast.  No sulfites added
to kill the yeast.   It has about 15 atm pressure in the bottle.  That
means VERY tiny bubbles.   No commercial bubbly has pressure that
high.   It has to be chilled to 22-25ºF before opening to tame it enough
so that it does not blow to the ceiling when uncapped.

I was fortunate enough to get a private tour of the facility that makes
one of the largest/oldest brands of hard cider.   They make wine from
chinee apple juice concentrate (no extra charge for formaldehyde) and
water.  Then they run it through a carbonator and bottle it like pop. Yuk!

I drove the 107, 115, 123, and 126 in the occasional ice and snow in OK,
with plenty of hills. Absolutely the worst place was our street and
driveway. I always managed, but it was close sometimes, and a few times I
had to leave one in the street because I couldn't get it up the drive.
Then I got the 2000 ML350. It is the only car (including a Saab Sonnett
III) that had NO problem climbing and iced over drive. It just went right
on up like nothing was wrong. Stopping was no better than anything else
though.
I was (am) very impressed by the ML 4matic - and that was the first
version. I out ran several Jeeps and 4WD pickups in OKC on the hills at
lights with the Saab, back in the day, but the ML was hands down better.
I've never driven a 4matic sedan - don't know how they compare.
We now have the all wheel drive Subaru, but we haven't had significant ice
or snow since we got it to compare to the ML.

I've tried sandbags in the trunk. It helps, but only a little. I think
the tires have been my downfall. Lower-end all-season radials just have
zero grip in the snow, especially wet icy snow.

[MBZ] winter tires

2020-10-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Dan's recent query has me thinking about winter tires (specifically for
my XC90 as I try to keep my old MBs out of the salt).

Discount Tire showing these in the "best" rating category for snow
tires, with the Bridgestone and Michelin similarly priced and the Nokian
substantially more.

Bridgestone Blizzak DMV2 vs. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV vs. Michelin

My W115 was great in the snow. Proper snow tires, and maybe
a little bit of trunk weight, are the keys. For the hills, you also need
some brass balls sometimes. Momentum going up the hills is a
requirement.

Based on your experiences it sounds like 4Matic would be beneficial anyway.

2020-10-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If you're talking about Indiana specifically, I can relate my
experiences.

My RWD diesels (W116 and W123) are useless in the snow. Especially with
the diesel torque they spin out very easily. Out in the county there are
some hills that have created predicaments for me more than once.

Same thing has happened with my FWD Volvo XC90, though at the time I was
also being limited by the traction control. I didn't realize it could be
turned off and that might have helped me get a better running start at
the hill. As it was I was close to home so I had one of the boys come
with the 4WD Frontier and a chain which pulled the Volvo and itself up
the same hill without issue.

The one thing missing from the above is good snow tires. I've never
sprung for that expense, though the Volvo needs new front tires before
the winter so I will probably do that this winter.

The AWD Element, prior to its current transmission issues, has also been
good in snow and has all-season tires.

So I would say if you're not getting the 4Matic, at least plan to get
good snow tires.

Ran into her on the sidewalk in Dec carrying a vase of a dozen roses for my
wife's B-day. She put out her arms, looked straight at me, gave me a
surprised look and said "FOR ME!???". Then said "BEAUTIFUL" and walked by.

These people are in showbiz for a reason.

Our regular carrier drives a right side drive Jeep, and the substitute
driver sits in the right seat and drives a regular crown vic.

We had a contract carrier a few years ago that had a basic Chevy, like a
Cavalier or Impala, that had rigged a steering wheel on the right side of the
cabin with a spare steering column and a couple of bicycle sprockets and chain.
It looked real Rube Goldberg but it was actually pretty cool. Of course the car
was a beater, but it did the job.

All of the carriers from Olivet and some of them from Charlotte are
still delivering in private vehicles. (my mom's Charlotte route is
served with a USPS van, mine by whatever the carrier owns)

And it's getting harder and harder to find something with a clear floor
that lets you stab at the pedals from the right seat. Something,
especially something hybrid or long range EV, that lets you switch sides
with the steering wheel would be perfect for rural carriers, if the
pedals are likewise usable.

I thought I asked this question before but I searched and did not find it. Anyway,
re: the 06 E350AWD (AKA, The Paperweight) - I solved one transmission problem by fitting
a correct battery in it. Took it for a test drive and find it does not upshift from the
starting gear. I am wondering if a Fluid and filter would make any difference. I am
wondering if the Conductor plate could be at fault. Maybe I should change it "while
I'm in there" (a catch-22 that I dislike)? There are trans fluid /Filter/Conductor
plate its for less than $100 on the internet so I am thinking it's a good idea. What's
the consensus of those who know much more about auto trans than I do?

Thanks,
