Use a virtual machine (like VirtualBox) guest.  Run it only when
you need iTunes.  As far as iTunes/apple is concerned, it is the
only software installed on the computer.  And it's easy to
"unplug" the ethernet that connects to the web but you can still
use host-only network or guest-shared directory to access files on
the host computer.

As much as I hate Google, if you could install an operating system on my 
iPhones that didn't behave as if Apple owned the phone instead of me, 
I'd be grateful. Which brings me to why I don't leave iTunes on my

If only iTunes were well behaved enough to leave installed on my 
computer, or if only the iPhone file manager could actually

[MBZ] Something frequent travelers will understand

I often have to watch YouTube videos on how to hack hotel thermostats and AC 
units. A lot of places set them up to where they don’t get cold enough, or the 
fan doesn’t run full time to drown out noise. Upon arrival I have to google the 
brand of thermostat or AC and figure out how to get into the configuration 
settings to get it do for what I want it to do in the room I’m paying for. Some 
places have them tied to motion sensors in the room and at night no motion is 
happening and the ac shuts off. I wake up in the middle of the night burning 
up. You can also eliminate the motion sensor in the settings also. Always be 
sure to set it back how it was before you leave.

Yep. Wanted the Tracfone app today, couldn't get it.
First time I tried to install an app on any device I actually carry for 
a phone, and only because there's one thing that can currently be done 
only with Tracfone's iOS app.

I used to get jiggy with command line and Unix.  Not done it for ages since 
setting and a slew of hackintosh boxes when 43 had the whitehouse.   I no 
longer found it “fun” to go spelunking in hardware and stuff as much as I had

The hotswap boot is stuck in SEA.  Just toss your drive in and go.  Like using 
the tape back ups used to be.  Not happy to learn from Jim that target disk no

Yes

Just trying to find the Appstore crap that I purchased is a trial.  Yesterday 
(not catalina) I could see all the things I ever had.  Today, the interface is 
opaque and convoluted and shows nothing I have elsewhere.  I search while 
looking at the applications folder, and find most of it GONE.  Like Firefox and 
the anti virus/spyware stuff.  Productivity, games, lots of things remain alive 
on the MB, but will not find fertile ground in the MBP.

Itunes?  Now I am locked out, so must find a way to import the old libraries.  
And it will not show my store credits.  Says I am flat broke.  Must be because 
I refused to give them banking data for apple pay.

 I've got a cool external drive, I think its a Western Digital, that uses a 
base that is just the normal SATA connectors. So I can pull the base off and 
use it with just a bare drive if needed.

It probably would have gone smoothly with rotating media, but a flash drive can 
now
ONLY be formatted with the new filesystem, which means things like target disk 
mode
(from El Krapitan) won't work.  The new OS installers check, and WON'T work to 
deliver
an OS via target disk mode, unlike in the prior decades.  We were unable to 
'restore' this
machine to the state of his prior laptop and then upgrade the OS to Catalina.  
(I've done
that sort of thing before, in past years' upgrades.)  It took me weeks to get 
the machine
into the state I expected to be able to reach in a few hours.  It's fine now, 
and works well,
but getting there?

Not Impressed.

I feel your pain.
I merely wanted to copy my contacts list from one iPhone (iOS 13) to 
another (iOS 12).

Did the put the phones together and let phone 1 set up phone 2.
But that didn't move contacts.
In fact, in the eyes of Apple, there is no excuse to ever want to copy 
contacts from one phone to another. If you want to copy anything, you 
want to copy the whole thing, across your computer using iTunes. But 
first, we need to update both phones to the latest iOS, so that takes an 
overnight 4GB download, two nights for two phones.
And since you're copying the whole phone, everything you have saved on 
the receiving phone gets obliterated. But you copied your contact list 
and it only took two days.


I should have manually typed the contacts in, there were only about 50 
of them.


The price you pay for supposedly better privacy than Goolag allows is 
devices that won't do a damn thing you want them to do, but instead 
force you to do what Apple wants you to do.

This applies not only to Mercedes obviously but to all makes. They all 
want to install electronic stuff that will not stand the test of time. 
Pretty soon the fancy things that you have become accustomed to don't 
work and cannot be readily repaired.


My 2013 F150 has Ford's early version of SYNC. They have moved on and 
can't or won't upgrade the older version. The result is that I no longer 
have the ability to use the hands' free with my iphone. The dealer tried 
to get it to work but was unable. Grrr! I guess I need to go back to one 
of the little doodads that hangs on the visor as I miss the ability to 
use the phone in the vehicle.


I drove my 115 300D today (maybe for the last time this fall) and am 
amazed at how well it works and how simple it seems.

The XPEL is like a super saran wrap type plastic film.  It is not a varnish
or clear coat.
The advantage I see is the ability to just snag a corner and peel it off if
it eventually goes bad.  To install it you wet it and squeegee it onto a
polished lens.  It adheres tenaciously and does not need a sanded surface
with the "tooth" a sprayed or painted clear coat may require.  I could not
face the prospect of sanding off a varnish or clear coat every year of two.

The also have Bilstein, which they didn't have for W140 5 years ago when 
I bought a set of super useless "Lesjöfors" on eBay.
(I think they were counterfeit, the car sat high initially, was level 
the next morning, almost as low as the OE broken springs after a one 
mile drive on a dirt road, and lower than broken springs after a month. 
I had never seen springs just get weaker from a car sitting on them 
overnight.

I would be really careful about this. I say that because I have a pair of HID 
headlights on my S210 wagon that the PO did the spar varnish or urethane thing 
to, and when they got cloudy I tried to polish them and couldn’t get through 
whatever it was that they sprayed on it.
