Re: [MBZ] Dash Cam Memory Cards

2020-12-12 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
Same.

Back in the day, I would get old Flash PCMCIA cards from the bay of fleas, for
use in my Newtons. The cards were near MTBF on read/write cycles, but the
handheld was not going to tax them in any manner. Most came out of Cisco
servers. Not a one failed me. There was usage in iPods, which had massive
usage cycles and those seemed to be of lesser quality, with a shorter MTBF.

Re: [MBZ] OT iMac VirtualBox for WinXP

2020-12-12 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The latest we have is Catalina, which is 10.14, and they're now pushing 10.15
IIRC.
I'm running either El Capitan, 10.11, or High Sierra, 10.13 depending on which
system
you're talking about. To talk to some of our older Airport gear we need 10.6,
for which
you cannot use VMware. That's what I got VirtualBox for, and it was a
nightmarish process
getting that installed and working. (You have to trick it into thinking you
have Server.)

All that crap to just run the stinking Airport utility, which should never have
abandoned
their older hardware.

Apple is now worse than Microsoft ever was, regarding gratuitous changes and
abandonment.

The guy also had a 300D turbo as well.  I asked him about it and he says
some buy is supposed to coming to look at it this afternoon.  He did not
have it listed anywhere.  I asked him  how much he wanted for that one
and he said he would take $300.  I told him I would buy it if the other
guy doesn't show up.  We shall see. He said he just sold a 380SL also.
I seem to recall seeing that listed but not sure.

Looked into this guy a little more by looking up the tax records on his
place.  This house of his is 8500 sqft with 6 bedrooms 5.5 baths.  Last
owner of the land was a mining company.  Looks like he got the land
cheap.  However the accessed value on his vast estate is 1.2 million, he
pays close to $14k a year in property taxes.  I guess in other parts of
the country that amount would buy you a small 1500sqft house on a city lot.

I am using VMware, VirtualBox, and Qemu, all for different things. VMware is
clearly the
most professional of them, but it costs money. (Boss paid for it, I use it for

Which Mac OS are you going to run?

Nothing special going on. Just run the VB installer, be sure to download the
add-ons for it, too, and then spin up a VM and install your Windows instance.
Pretty straightforward.

I’ve never been enamored of Parallels. It seems fiddly to work with and as I
recall was nowhere near as simple to set up and run VMs on as VirtualBox.

[MBZ] OT iMac VirtualBox for WinXP

2020-12-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I bought a 2009 24" iMac yesterday for $230 to use for my laser cutter
computer.  640GB HDD, 8GB of memory, processor looks to be what you
would expect from a 2009 machine (I forget what it is, a single
processor at like 2.3GHz).  I guess it is an OK machine, seems to work
OK, the marketing outfit I got it from was using it for graphics design.

I'm going to get an app called Lightburn to run the laser.  I also have
a bunch of design apps and stuff that run on WinXP (and maybe some later
version of Winders, I don't know) that I was using on a WinXP box to run
the laser and my CNC machine, so I want to have those too.

I read the discussion before about VirtualBox, seems like it might be
the thing to use to set up a WinXP VM, install the Win apps on it, then
use the MacOS to run my laser, so everything will be available for
design, driving the machine, etc.  I have some other VM software,
Parallels, on another iMac, it is kind of a PITA as the version I have
will only run on an old version of MacOS, which is fine as that machine
doesn't need the latest/greatest, upgrades cost $$.

Is there anything I need to know before setting this iMac up?  I guess
it is fairly straightforward to install VB then WinXP?  Any gotchas with
WinXP on the VB side?

I did. Flash memory is NOT 'for the ages'. Not if you're actively using it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: USB drive size for factory recovery media

2020-12-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Ballpark I would say 16GB should be more than adequate. Besides making a
recovery drive, I would also make a system image backup as well, but keep it
current. That way if the machine cacks you get pretty much everything back,
including your personal stuff. A recovery drive only restores the system, not
the user data.

OK, let's say I'm getting a new Win10 laptop and I need to have an empty
thumb drive handy to make a factory restore disk before I start using
it.

What size do I buy?

I thought the first thing you did was put up a pole and get temporary power...

I thought it was common to build on generators, and then when you need
power (like for starting up the new well), call the power company and
say 'hey, the well drillers need power by next Tuesday' (the electrical
inspection being complete by then, hopefully).
