IIRC the C126 and C140 had no hood stars either.

A first gen Hatch. I didn't realize they still made those in 1980.
I'm pretty sure 1980 is the square body.
Looks like my 1975, minus the brown paint and roof rack.
I kinda regret scrapping that, especially since the roof rack seems to
be quite rare.

I was threatened with BP meds 15 years ago - did some research and used
this instead:
https://www.sfherb.com/Hibiscus-Flowers-Cut--1-Lb_p_13.html
I drank 4-5 cups a day for a year, and never heard another mention of meds.
I'm down to two cups a day now and doing fine - pass my flight physical
without issues.
My wife likes it, I tolerate it.

I'm with you on the BP meds Curt. I was on a big dose of carvedilol after my
heart failure, and it nearly cost me my job. About all I could do was wander
in to work and stagger through the day, sort of like having an anchor in each
shoe. Same thing my Dad felt when he had heart trouble in the 70's.

Got that backed off and I have much more energy, but I don't feel normal unless
I skip the meds a couple days in a row. Funny thing is that the heart failure
was viral and temporary. My BP has always been in the 140-150 over 90 range,
and I have zero effects from it other than a slightly thickened left ventricle
wall, and that was normal while I had the heart failure.

I need to get more excercise and get some weight off anyway, maybe I can ditch
the carvedilol. Only still on it because my cardiologist said he'd seen some
cases where discontinuing it caused the ventricular failure to re-appear,
otherwise I'd have quit it then.

2020-12-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I think it depends on which news source you go by.

When I was out of town last week I hit the treadmill every night at the hotel.
I did a mile jog each night trying to work up to 2 miles etc. we have a really
nice treadmill at the house but I can’t seem to get the wife to move all the
cloths she has piled up on it and she tells me not to touch it. We also have a
gym membership we have been paying for because last year she decided she wanted
to start working out. I don’t think she has been to the gym in a year and keeps
insisting next week she will go. In the mean time we still get dinged every
month. She says I can go over there rather than using our treadmill at home. I
don’t want to spend 30 minutes driving there and 30 minutes back to do a 15-20
workout on the treadmill.

Engine is always stronger than the parking brake in all the cars I've
owned. I've caught myself driving several blocks from the house with the
parking brake still on. It's less noticable than you might think.

Parking brake is just to keep the car from rolling by gravity.

Same sort of short sighted hysteria that drives purchasing “health” foods and

Parking/emergency brakes should be able to skid the wheels.
The handbrake on my Saab 99 could, and it worked the front wheels.
Probably less than 60 yards for 60-0 on handbrake. Girling front brakes,
parking brake used the same pads as service brakes.
My Saturn Ion has rear drum service brakes, so the parking brake is just
mechanical application of the service brakes. If you try to drive with
the brake on, you feel the back end drop (first gear) or rise (reverse)
when you start to let the clutch out.

T-Mo uses the 700MHz band for some of its "4G" antennae, in order to
push the signal some distance. I'm 5 miles due south of my T-Mo tower,
and my cell stretches to the lake nearly five miles south of me. I'm
pretty sure that cell runs around 700MHz and does not have fantastic
speeds. I wonder if I can get RF information (frequency, signal
strength) from the modem they sent me. Cute little thing, slightly
smaller than my old Cradlepoint pocket router, about the size of a pack
of cigarettes but half as thick. If the sample device doesn't do the
lower frequencies I suspect it won't work any better than my phone here.

2020-12-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nope. The cellular guys were already talking about this when I was getting out
of the generator business, and they thought it was all a lot of pixie dust.

The mm wave will support some serious speeds, but it has very limited range.
This is what they deploy in metropolitan areas. The lower frequency (600 MHz?)
stuff will go into outlying areas where line of sight and latency is expected.

It matters not to me, as there’s nothing I do with a phone that would ever
require those kinds of speeds that I could imagine.

I seem to recall something about installing 5 g radios or whatever you
call them inside certain buildings, which woudl be the only way to get
it inside.  Is there really a need to have more than 10-20mbps on a cell
phone anyway?  I mean in the middle of most cities I get 30-60 and hit
133 today in Tulsa.  In other words, is there a reason I need to rush
out to get the new iphone that is 5g capable?  I don't think so.

You will only see 5G speeds when you are within 500 ft of a repeater, outside,
and there isn't significant interference from another repeater.

So in other words, 4LTE is what you will have forever in you car, inside any
structure, or more than 500 ft from a millimeter wavelength repeater.

Not going to happen, 5G is a classic case of 1) a solution is search of a
problem and 2) vapor-ware that will never actually exist in usable form.

Biggest issue with 5G is that everyone is dropping 1x coverage, which is gonna
isolate people more than a mile or two from an antenna (read 90% of rural

[MBZ] OT: Diagnosis: Its a dirty old Dodge

2020-12-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
2010 Dodge 1500 needs rear brakes, I should have done them when I did the front
last summer.I'd forgotten that American cars had drum parking brakes and of
course when I took it apart (Sunday, again of course) the park brake shoes just
fell to pieces. Ugh. Autozone claimed to have them in stock but when I got
there the shoes weren't. I managed to get them yesterday and dug into it
today.Overall its not a bad job but very different from a German car. I don't
like how the caliper pins work and on the driver's side I had a heck of a time
getting the caliper back in because the bellows were in the wrong place and
stiff enough I didn't realize they could slide.
Now with it all assembled I'm in parking brake adjustment hell. I've never done
it before and of course I've never really tested how well the thing holds
before either. I definitely got the driver's side too stiff, I couldn't turn
the wheel at all by hand, so I backed that off a little. The truck can still
drive ahead pretty well with the brake on but I think that's probably a
function of gearing and a 390HP engine...
I got too cold and stiff tonight, tomorrow I'll put it back on jackstands and
try again.

Yep, it sucks and I would think it would be hard on the starter, battery, and
engine. I guess if it gets the fuel economy up by half a gallon that is all

A few years later, you need a new starter.

I was surprised, when shopping for an engine for my 2016-2019 Cruze, the
nearest one I found had already had its starter pulled and sold. I was
surprised anybody would want one already.

And yes, it's beefed up for start-stop.

The Cruze 1.4L burns about .28GPH at idle.
I seem to recall hearing that 1.6IDI VWs pulled about a pint an hour.
I have no idea what a modern CDI 3 liter consumes.

I suspect the main reason for putting start-stop in a diesel is to avoid
idling, which isn't good for the emissions system.

T-Mo trial seems like a nice deal for anybody who wants 30 days / 30GB

the end of the trial you're supposed to find a T-Mo store to return the
