I have a standing reward of $10,000 for the Navy pilot that can verify they
shot down McCain over N. Vietnam, post the Forestall.
I've spoken personally with the man who was air boss for that ship, on that
day, and his version of what happened and the Navy's version does not jive,
at all..
McCain had some serious baggage over that event.

It has been flaky, but I was hoping I could live with intermittent low power
and the CEL for a couple more months until the weather is better.

No such luck, gonna be out $1300 for a Borg-Warner turbo and manifold.
Hopefully it won't be a giant pain to get it in and out.  Will have to clean
the intercooler and replace all the 0-rings, which is a pain, have to remove
the bumper cover and take out the right headlight to get to the intercooler.

Anyway, not really looking forward to that except that it will be nice to have
the Golf back in full trim, it's a blast to drive when it's runnining well.
Should boost the milage a bit too, it's been running 45-47 instead of the
expected 50-52.

For Benz content, losing the Golf means I had to resurrect the half dead 300TE
for a daily driver.  With my mom not being in good shape this fall, I never got
around to putting in the new injectors and checking for a leaking fuel
distributor plunger, very likely at 33 years and 270k miles.  I did get a new
coil in it finally, and that helped a bunch, no more stalling and better idle,
but nowhere near what it should be.  Now the fuel pressure leaks down over a
few hours, very likely dripping injectors which also give the idle issues.
I'll be checking the idle control valve hoses, they are probably due for
replacement again, third time since I got the car.  Darned things split down
the mold seam and give all sorts of vacuum leak issues.

Today's project was to replace the riv-nuts for the license plate -- the screws
were a wild assortment from when I got the car, and now that Indiana goes 5 or
6 years on plates, they were all rusted firmly in place and spun the riv-nuts.
Had to grind them out and find more -- at $6 each! -- to get the plate on it.
Finally found a strong enough screw and used two washers and some grease to
pull them in, but I have license plate properly attached now.

Starts hard, idles poorly, and the heat is erratic (I think the temp wheel
rheostat is cracked on the solder joint -- if you push inward on it the temp
controls just fine, otherwise it wanders all over), but it will get me to and
from work for the next week or so.

Bought (another) new battery for the 300D too, may try to get that up and
running, although I really need to reduce the fleet, it's only me now (Mom
passed away just after Xmas at 97) and I really don't need one decent and two
half junk cars.

Check for split hoses, missing or torn gas cap gasket, and cracked plastic
parts. Any of them will give you fits, the tank does NOT vent out the cap (or
in, for that matter), all venting is through the evaporative control system.

You will need to verify the operation of all the valves too, as failures can
cause vacuum leaks (which is what you have and is setting the CEL) -- also make
sure the charcoal cartridge is not plugged with crud, air gets drawn through it
to clear the gasoline out of the charcoal and if the vent surface is clogged,
you will have excess fuel since it's not being drawn off.

Big PITA, but when it works it works well.

I need to check the system on the TE, I'm pretty sure some of my running issues
are a clogged vent line. Perfect size for mud daubers around here, just like
weedeaters.

Re: [MBZ] carpet cleaning methods

2021-01-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The best material I have found to remove nasty carpet stains is Woolite
Heavy Carpet Foam, and a nylon brush.
Spray it on out of the can, scrub it into the fabric of the carpet and let
it dry. It dissolves and emulsifies "Carpet stuff". Then, aggressively
vacuum the carpet, repeat as necessary.
Follow up with a steam machine and vacuum the carpet dry [or nearly dry as
you can get it. The steam machine I use to good success is a hand held unit
that holds about 12 oz of water and makes lots of steam. The one I have is
a Vaporetto, I recall Shark or Steam Shark... something like that, sold on
TV for a while, looks identical.
Wet Dry shop vac to pull out any excess moisture. In AZ... lay in the sun
for a couple hours to dry your mileage may vary on that.

I put the scanner on and it gave me a P2013-002 code "Major leak in
purge system.  Hose in system not connected or filler cap open P0455"

I did not go drive it again but I cleared the code, took the cap off and
tightened it on again, will drive again tomorrow and see what sorts
out.  If not the filler cap (which I tightened before but got the code
again) I will have to check the purge system. Saw that a component can
go bad *

I guess anything in the purge line, a hose leaking or something, can
cause this fault.  Will need some daylight to check it.

I used the $150 iCarsoft scanner to do all that.  And while I had it
connected I also watched a bunch of real-time performance data from
various systems just while idling which is kinda cool, looks like
everything was working well which is comforting.  It burns 2L/hr of fuel
at idle!

Not sure what else it could be or what the blinking low fuel light is about.

Anyone seen this? Seems to run OK. I’ll have to put the scanner on it when I

Maybe he doesn’t worry about it since it would freeze in a short time after it

Good shop vac or shampoo machine will extract almost all the water,
leaving the carpet just damp. Of course if there are thick layers of
padding etc underneath, that might retain some water for a while. I
would never do something like that in the wintertime -- do it on a hot
day so the car can sit out in the sun and bake dry afterwards.

He sells them but I suspect they're available elsewhere too. If you watch any
of the detail folks they all use those type of pads. Apparently there are
different textures for how severe the cleaning needed is. I guess you want to
use the softest that will do the job to prevent damage.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 2007 Mercedes Benz ML 320 CDI DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTERS

2021-01-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
In researching the $900E500 trans issue I ran across this in a SLK
forum.  there is a lot of good detailed information about the systems.

https://www.slkworld.com/forums/das-star-coding-xentry-needed-for-new-versions.273/

https://www.slkworld.com/threads/is-vediamo-compatible-with-openport-2-0.558739/

https://www.slkworld.com/threads/das-xentry-vediamo-cheap-alternative-enable-a-or-m-mode-for-free.564926/

It would almost be worth trying if I didn't have the other systems.
Apparently the software is out there somewhere (I have not searched for
it) to download and this $15 box or something like it can talk through
the OBDII to all the systems if you can get the software.  It appears
there might be some computer gyrations to actually get it running but
who knows.

Of course with the disclaimers...:

MB has three diagnostic systems. HHT, DAS, and Xentry. Sometimes the
system can be referred to as Star, SDS, DAS, or Xentry. All three
systems are included in the system. The HHT (Hand Held Terminal) system
is the first generation and runs until the early 2000's, DAS (Diagnosis
Assistance System) is the system in place until about 2012-2013 or so,
and then Xentry has been in place since then.

Thank you!
You can start here

This section is solely for coding advice using proprietary Mercedes Benz
Star Diagnostic Systems (SDS/DAS/StarDiag/xentry ). Any

What Floyd says.

If you’re not going to do most of the work yourself, it would be a waste of
money to invest in a STAR system. One of the cheaper handheld things can be
helpful in narrowing problems down and making sure your mechanic doesn’t try
and extract his monthly boat payment from you.

A properly equipped and configured STAR system will work on MBs from the mid
1990s to at least 2012-2014. One other advantage is that in some of the later
models, like the W211s, it also allows you to enable features that are
otherwise locked down by the factory. However, that’s some high level stuff and
not a place to be tinkering.

I bought a complete Star clone system off AliExpress for like $550. You can buy
the little handheld systems like the iCarsoft for $150 and they do a lot but
not everything, they will show most codes and such but might not be able to
clear/reset all systems. Other handheld units that cost more can do more.

I think for working on anything from the 90s on you need a system of some sort,
the Star clone is the best obviously. For that diesel you would probably need
the Star clone.

The thing about this is that if you buy a “newer” (I.e. anything from the
2000s) and don’t want to go broke paying a mech to sort it out every time you
have some issue, the Star clone will more than pay for itself if you have the
interest and aptitude to work on the vehicle. Otherwise buy a Toyota or GM
thing (will also have issues but less proprietary maybe).

My indy was unable to fully diagnose the CEL on my 2014 GLK using his
handheld system (he's an MB certified tech who had worked at a local
dealership). He could only hazard a guess that it was a bad sensor, but no
guarantee, so I took it to the dealer to avoid throwing money at the
problem. The dealer's proprietary diagnostic computer revealed cracks in
both air charge hoses, which I had them replace. This led to a huge
improvement in fuel economy and better overall performance, so I felt it
was worth the money.

Re: [MBZ] carpet cleaning methods

2021-01-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was talking about the vacuum thing. Its like a carpet shampooer but on a
smaller scale.
He talks in some of the videos about how he leaves the car open in his heated
garage for several hours which dries it out. If you look at his website a full
detail like in the video is $500+ which I can understand, its gotta take most
of a day, then add several hours of drying...

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 2007 Mercedes Benz ML 320 CDI 4WD Sport SUV - $3, 500 (OBO) - Phoenix

2021-01-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

2021-01-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
This is more or less true for any car. I think I paid $250 for the VAG-COM
cable to connect to my VWs and it definitely paid for itself several times. The
computer is a tool useful for diagnosing a myriad of problems on newer cars.
Its like a very particular wrench...

I don’t know about mirror mortals, but regular folks can, yes. You’ll have to
drop roughly $500-$800 for one. There are less expensive options, but they’re
not as comprehensive and can’t always access all of the systems.

Young John McCain had a lot of that. Having flag officers in the family
may have reinforced it.

Led to popularity with friends and girls (and graduation at the bottom
of his class) as a Cadet, led to a couple of written off planes (and
IIRC an Italian powerline) in training.

Some say it led to his becoming a POW. But I discount that a bit, I

[MBZ] Blinking low fuel light and CEL in ML500

2021-01-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I was driving the ML to an appointment and the low fuel light started blinking
with 3/4tank. Shut down and it went off, then started again after driving a bit
then CEL came on after a few more minutes. I checked the gas cap, it’s tight.
Not sure what else it could be or what the blinking low fuel light is about.

Anyone seen this? Seems to run OK. I’ll have to put the scanner on it when I
get home.

SRS light could be bad passenger presence switch, or could be a halfass
crash repair.

CEL could be something serious, or could be that sensor. I'd consider it
worth a PPI and maybe even try swapping that sensor as part of the
inspection. You've got to deal with that CEL if you buy it, might as
well troubleshoot it when you can still avoid buying it.
