[MBZ] OT: more than you wanted to know about COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing

Of minor interest, the "fill and finish" of the Moderna vaccine is
taking place here in my town. No, we don't have any more access to it
than anyone else.

That’s about right. I got an estimate to do a full repaint of my 1995 E420 with
me pretty much stripping everything possible off of it prior to painting, and
it was $5,000.

That’s the only way to do it.

[MBZ] OT: Trading teeth with the Tooth Fairy during the pandemic

2021-01-19 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
*Trading teeth for treasure during the pandemic. *Around the globe, the
pandemic helped make 2020 one the most challenging years ever for dentists.
The *Dental Tribune* reported most dental offices around the world closed
their doors in March. While most eventually reopened, the impact on dental
practices and suppliers was significant. Many adopted cost-cutting measures.
7

The Tooth Fairy did not suffer the same fate.

In August 2020, *Delta Dental’s Original Tooth Fairy Poll*® found, “…the
Tooth Fairy’s average cash gift increased 30 cents for a lost tooth, for a
total of $4.03 per tooth.” The value of a lost tooth has tripled since the
poll began in 1998. (The Tooth Fairy exchange rate was about $1.30/tooth
back then.)8

Four dollars may seem steep, but the United States isn’t the only country
where lost teeth command a high price. For example:9, 10

· Japanese children receive ¥437.93 from the Tooth Fairy. That’s about
$4.22.

· Ireland and Spain, a baby tooth is worth €3.64 or $4.41.

· Canadian kids receive $5.36 Canadian or $4.38 American.

· Brazilian parents get off lighter. A tooth there is valued at R$17.12 or
$3.27.

That’s a great place, and something I would certainly support.

There used to be a guy in Tampa that was a retired mechanic who took car
donations and cleaned up/fixed up the cars, then “gifted” them to single
mothers who needed transportation for work. It was coordinated through a local
women’s shelter that we support. I could see myself doing that in retirement.

Re: [MBZ] Gorgeous car -- 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe 5-Speed

2021-01-19 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I thought the reference to a 14 year period of refurbishment was funny.
I have a boat that I have been "refurbishing" for almost that long but
years go by between times of doing a bit of work on it. I want to get it
going so that we can either use it or sell it but it has been on the
back burner for a long while.  It is a 20' aluminum Lund with an I/O but
all of the wood is bad. Needs a floor and new consoles etc.

2021-01-19 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Beautiful car - crazy price. $130K now.

A fellow student that I knew back in University days had a Burgundy one
that looked like that model. Don't recall what year his was but it might
have been about that vintage. That was when I was in Law School between
1977 and 1980. The net suggests the model was available between 1959 and
1972 so his may well have been older than this one on BAT. It had
belonged to  a mechanic at a MB Dealership and anything that it had
needed had been replaced with factory parts. The cover for the rear
window ledge (package tray?) had been replaced because it faded. I don't
recall what he had paid for it but it was nice. Back then it was just a
used car. Now it is a "classic".

[MBZ] Charity vehicles

2021-01-19 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The local (?) Union Gospel Mission charity accepts vehicle donations. They have
an in-house 'repair' facility, probably like Goodwill used to be, where they
try to bring
back to life the easy ones. (I suspect that the crap goes to auction or scrap
like everybody
else.) They have a car lot, where the 'good' donations end up. That's
actually where
I bought the V10 truck. They were still trying to decide whether or not to fix
its problems
when I dropped in, looking for exactly what they had, as-is. The salesman was
happy
to find an appropriate buyer, as it was not a suitable vehicle for everyman.
For me, at
the time, all it needed to do was roll off under its own power.

Anyway, if I ever were to donate a vehicle that's where I'd send it. I was
happy to
buy from them, as their income goes to operate warming shelters, and feed and
clothe
their clientele. Yes, you probably have to sit through a bit of a sermon to
get a meal,
and behave yourself to get a bed. Wah.

Re: [MBZ] might be interesting

2021-01-19 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
You'd think maybe they'd find dealers who would be willing to provide
title services as a donation-in-kind. Tax writeoff for the dealer, plus
goodwill. More $$$ for the charity. Maybe not enough kind-hearted
dealers around?

On the other hand if the charity is volunteer-run, it sort of makes
sense to keep the workload to a minimum, otherwise you lose volunteers.

Re: [MBZ] might be interesting

2021-01-19 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Which brings us back to government/charity think: free money beats no
money.

About 20 years ago, a local fire chief signed a contract with
telemarketers.
The telemarketers did all the work, and at the end of the campaign
they'd cut a check to the FD for 4% of the gross. Which was all well and
good, until the details became public, and the average working stiff was
quite irate to learn that giving $100 of hard earned cash to the FD
meant flushing $96 down the tube from their point of view.

Do you recall the original aspect ratio or rolling diameter?
The way I remember it, the euro sizing was taller than the typical US 78
ratio of those times.

I want to say 175R14 would translate to 175/83R14 or close to it.
But all I can state with total certainty is that 165R15 found on Beetles
and Saabs was bigger than the 175/70R15 found on Saab EMS and Turbo.

Re: [MBZ] might be interesting

2021-01-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There was some sort of charity outfit in Houston that would get donated cars
and have a live auction once a month at a lot they had in a fairly rough part
of town. I went to a couple just for grins. Some of the cars were total junk,
others not too bad. I remember some kid and his mother were there once and
bought a half-decent 300SD for $800, the kid was ecstatic. It was a reasonable
deal at the time. Another one I remember was a clapped-out Vega 2 ol boys
bought to make a dragster, it went for some fairly big money, like $2k if I
recall but they were happy with the deal.

The auctions lasted a year or two then faded away, no idea what happened to the
organization.

They don’t care, because it’s essentially free money for them.

My local NPR station has a guy that coordinates these donations. That is, he
makes the calls to the service that disposes of the cars/boats/whatever. They
never touch or see the vehicle, they just call a service that picks it up,
determines the best way to get rid of it (many times it’s CoPart) and sends
them the check after deducting his fees.
