Re: [MBZ] Sort of OT Car totals

2021-01-31 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Heating the spark plug electrodes is an old two stroke trick. Two stroke
plugs get oil fouled with semi burned oil carbon, then get further fouled
while trying to start, using lots of choke, and prime.

Heating the plugs helps burn off the semi carbon residue and that allows
the electrons to make spark... Bob's yer Unkle..

Glad the trick still works.

Re: [MBZ] Sort of OT Car totals

2021-01-31 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I imagine its a thing that gets done but I've never heard of anybody doing it
on a snowmobile.
Anyway today I hit the points with more Deoxit and shaved them a little with a
file, then cleaned the shavings out with discount electronics cleaner, then
more deoxit, a little more file and more cleaner.
The points are super annoying to get to. Take the exhaust out, the recoil and
its cup out and then you can see the points through slots in the flywheel
(technically the magneto).
Anyway with that done I got nice bright snaps on the plugs but still no start
so I pulled each carb out of its boot but left the controls connected, and
cleaned the bowls and jets. Mikuni carbs are super easy to work on.
STILL wouldn't run. It'd start if I squirted premix past the carbs but it'd
only run for a second or three. While the carbs were out I proved the fuel pump
was pumping. So as a last ditch effort I pulled the plugs and heated the
electrodes until they glowed, stuffed it all back together, primed it once more
and it fired up and stayed running...
Heating the electrodes is a trick I was told by a Triumph motorcycle mechanic.
Its never worked for me before. I'm not sure it actually did anything now but
whatever, the machine ran. I drove it all around the yard, it scoots as good as
a 340cc with a cleated track ever does.
Now, do I sell it or register it as a vintage sled and ride it, or both? I've
got another vintage machine I could ride if I let this one go down the road.

Re: [MBZ] Newer Diesel MB SUV

2021-01-31 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think avoiding computers is just a "I'm afraid of new fangled..." It's not
hard to hook up a laptop and look at an ECU. The computers themselves rarely
fail and when they do it's often because of damage.
Once you've got the computer it's way easier to troubleshoot a lot of things
rather than just throwing parts at the problem.
Think of the laptop as another wrench...

IDK anything about the newer MB diesels. Some engines are vulnerable to
a "black death" issue with the injectors, Dan P. can tell you which
ones.

I try to avoid cars that have any computers. But that certainly rules
out anything after the mid 1980s.

[MBZ] OT rainy afternoon serendipity with old tech

2021-01-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was cleaning/organizing a bunch of stuff and found 2 old ipods I guess
I forgot I had, I think I had put music and such on my phone so didn't
use them anymore.  No telling how long they had been sitting in a case,
I plugged them in and charged them and both are working, one is 16GB and
the other is 32GB.  The 32GB had a lot of music on it but I am reloading
with some other stuff, it is syncing now and appears to be doing OK.
Kinda surprises me that iTunes recognizes it and is working with it.
The 16GB has stuff on it too, I might not fool with it since I have more
stuff on the 32.

I ordered some lightning adapters and some of the 30pin adapters they
need, fairly cheap on Amazon.  I need to figure out some good adapters
for this 211 and 163 so I can play it through the head units.  The 211
has some bluetooth thing ("Funkwerks") wired into the head unit but it
doesn't appear to work.  There are other ones out there that work, I'll
have to look into that.  Not sure about the 163 head unit.  I have a
bluetooth-> RF adapter, maybe that will be the best thing to use since
it is simple and is sorta OK.

Anyway, kinda fun to resurrect old tech.

Re: [MBZ] Newer Diesel MB SUV

2021-01-31 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My 2014 GLK 250 is anything but a roller skate and has plenty of carrying
capacity. There is a 350 Bluetec SUV that is more massive and IMO inferior
in handling and fuel economy to its economical cousin.

I should know that you guys would be enablers.
I spent yesterday getting snowmobiles running. The '98 and '91 Arctic Cats both
fired up relatively easily. The 91 was stuck, I didn't run it last year and is
must have had a little condensation in it and it was wicked cold yesterday. I
put an electric heater on it for half an hour or so and it loosened up pretty
good.
The 79 Polaris won't go, spark is iffy. I cleaned the points but apparently
haven't gotten them clean enough, it'll pop but won't stay running. I'll file
them some more I guess. Snowmobile points are way harder to replace than car
points. They live behind the flywheel and are powered by magneto so they're
hard to clean/test/replace.

Something I could definitely work on though. Parts are a concern but it would
mostly be a toy.
Dump trucks hold value really well. It's hard to find one in the price range a
home gamer would want to afford that isn't either older than me or trashed or
both...

Wow, '49 is old.
Our ancient International grain truck with nonfunctioning dump
hydraulics, the one we scrapped 25  years ago, was a 1956.

[MBZ] Newer Diesel MB SUV

2021-01-31 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My wife is considering a MB diesel SUV. I was surprised to learn that MB is
not making any more diesel cars/SUVs (at least not in USA) anymore. The most
recent I could find was 2016.

I was just searching MB diesel SUV and found several. They are ML, GLK (small
SUV that looks like a roller skate), GL, and GLE.

I think the conventional wisdom on newer MB is they are very nice as long as
they under warranty. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with any of these
MB diesel SUV 2011-2015.

2021-01-31 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
At just over 50, I've bought 14 cars so far, still own six, five are MB cars.
I've only owned one American car, a '67 Plymouth VIP, when I was in college.
Most of the rest are German and Japanese, with an Alpha Romeo mixed in while I
lived in Bella Napoli.

Owning a muscle car (the VIP) was a blast, that was a red coupe, burned almost
as much oil as gasoline.  Actually could take a corner very well, and man was
that 'go pedal' addicting.  Somehow I never got a ticket in that car.
