Life is short.  I was getting marginal test results and carried some excess 
mass that the Medico would give me stink eye about, but no preaching, just 
shared my numbers so I could ignore or maybe take my own form of action.

A few years ago I figured out that a vintage/older/classic chassis may no 
longer require the alimentary supplementation of a younger and 
growing/developing critter, so cut back to a single daily meal.  Slightly well 
rounded on a weekly metabolic nutrient basis (multi vitamin and ignore the five 
of this, six of that, daily calorie/vitamin/fruit/veggie/meat/starch food 
pyramid scheme).  Drink plenty of fluids and eat what you like within the one 
meal every 24 hours.  Still have a breaking of fasting and tiny “treat” or 
small snack each day, but there is real hunger and not just boredom and rote 
three meals.  Eating only when truly hungry and fasting, since old folks 
require less sustenances.

Last few annual physicals have had significant reductions of “troubling” (MD’s 
assessment) test results.  BP is lower, cholesterols are much lower (to the 
point the doc stopped trying to push statin), blood sugar is way down, and just 
more “fit” at least on paper.  

I still indulge with bacon, fats, ice cream, and the other supposed “bad” food. 
 Same old Garbage In, Garbage Out, but with less of it, the results on tests 
show I am super more healthful.  It did result in a loss of 20 kilo of 
un-required mass.  My meals are satiating and rich enough to please.  I think 
it boils down to moderation as one ages.  Grab that donut, eat the bacon, eggs, 
sausage and gravy, whatever makes your soul happy, but not at all hours of the 
day every darn day.  Nobody performs the labors that a rural agrarian diet 
required anymore.  We sit on our duff consuming netflix with a quart of rocky 
road and a package of Oreo after Zoom calls while our butts go numb.

YMMV, just take the time to figure out what your specific lifestyle requires 
and amend your consumption and activity to satisfy the need.  Eat a Twinkie if 
it makes you happy, just not the whole damn box in one sitting.

Selling the old homestead this Spring.  I am marveling at the obsolete tech 
hooked up to the outside wall.  Landlines that no longer serve with attendant 
box.  Cable TV multiple incursions that are no longer pertinent,  Fiber from 
the pole that has not been active for three years, and the Direct TV dishes on 
the roof.  The advent of 5G is just around the corner, but that is all some 
magical wireless box o’ wifi for all I can tell.  Still have far too many cable 
and wires terminating at the house that serve no purpose.  

BTW, the cell Service at my home is garbage.  I have to use the cell hotspot 
for interwebz.  I did a speed test and came back with 0.06 down stream.  
Upstream was almost 0.20 with the 4G vzw.  Ping in the 54 range.

Time to find a tropical paradise and tell the world to take a rolling leap at a 
F’ing donut.

In this instance, I cast my opinion alongside Andrew.
After 51 years of setting and not being massaged regularly with leather
balm and other kinds of leather materials, the leather seat covers would be
at the end of life.
Coupled with the horse hair padding used as underlayment, which also
degrades with time, the seat in the picture is timed out and is not a good
indication of actual mileage of the car.

Long term lack of use is nearly equal to the abuse of mileage, particularly
in the case of soft parts.

I'm guessing a 2006 Ion 2 is essentially the same as a 2007 Ion 2.
I like the 2.2 Ecotec, and the 5sp isn't bad, but it's a good idea to 
run the fluid level a little higher than specified.


The most grievous design specific thing that's happened to me is that 
when the exhaust perforated in front of the axle in December (only 228k 
miles) it spit hot gas at some plastic fuel lines going to a box on the 
back seat hump in the floor. Fortunately I investigated the source of 
the exhaust leak before it set my butt on fire. That's just a stupid 
design, putting evap emissions parts on the same side as the exhaust.


Another fun thing is that when the blower motor fails, you don't unscrew 
it from the heater box, you cut it out of the heater box. Yeah, I lost 
some blood performing that surgery standing on my head in freezing 
weather. On the plus side, you don't have to take the heater out, just 
saw out the blower motor and put a new one in with the accessory 
mounting ring that comes with the new one.


If you want to see if the owner(s) give a darn, lift the trunk floor and 
see if the battery has the vent yoke attached, and vent tube taking 
gasses out the floor, along with the battery hold down strap. If all 
that's missing, buffoons have been working on it. It's excusable to not 
have the vent hooked up if they put an AGM battery in it. Likewise not 
having a battery hold down.


I'm getting  ready to dump mine in the next month or so. I might have a 
set of extra wheels with Pirelli winter tires if I don't get the price I 
want for the car with all the wheels.

I was just given a 2001 Saturn SC1, that had been setting for "an unknown
length of time" I put in a fresh battery, pumped the gas tank empty..
fresh fuel... De-loused the interior [it had been a "handy place to put
stuff you would never use apparently]..
Put air in the tires [all were flat from setting]... put key in ignition..
listened for fuel pump... cranked.. it started.. blew smoke and mouse
nests I drove it away...

It needs a set of front fenders and bumper cover... [likely why parked] ...
no frame damage, radiator and front are good, so just plastic fenders and
plastic bumper cover mangled...
Does Anyone want one?

Triglycerides are free fats.  Trans fat (hydrogenated fats) and fructose both 
tend to raise LDL cholesterol plus triglycerides and high carbs tend to raise 
triglycerides I think, along with high fat intake.

For diet recommendations, they are pretty simple.  More fruits and veggies, 
plenty of leafy greens, cut back on the carbs, especially refined anything 
(white flour, white rice, degerminated corn, etc).

Whole wheat bread, brown rice, limited pasta, limited white bread.

Aim to reduce total calorie intake and to have the majority of the calories 
unsaturated fat and lean protein.  Limit red meat, no processed food if you can 
manage it (fermented sausage like salami, hot dogs, bacon, etc) and only 
natural cheese (no American, etc).

Keto is an option, but you don't have to go the whole way into ketotic 
metabolism to get some benefit.

More exercise if you aren't getting enough and better sleep, limited alcohol.

I have had high triglycerides. Still do if I eat too much garbage.
Triglycerides are affected by carbohydrates, particularly fast carbs. The liver 
stores a bit of glycogen. When excess carbs (glycogen) are detected, your liver 
converts the excess into triglycerides and they get deposited in your fat 
stores. Your PA is spot on. Surprising. Most medical professionals still spout 
the "fat is bad" line.

I don’t know about triglycerides 

White bread is not particularly good for you. Go with whole wheat or 
multi-grain which tastes better anyway.  White bread is just blah.  Costco sell 
this 21 grain bread that is really good. I’ve seen it in grocery stores too, 
Dave’s is the brand I think. Any refined flour products are no bueno. 

Sweets are a Saturday treat, the rest of the week fruits and such are your 
friends. 

It takes a little while and some discipline to change your habits, mostly 
overcoming inertia and addiction to sugar, but it’s not really too hard if you 
substitute treats and reward yourself on Saturday. 

Lots of fruits and veg and very little mammalian meats and minimal simple 
carbs.

Total Cholesterol 180
HDL Cholesterol54

Triglycerides 224

The Physician's Assistant who I saw said my triglycerides were high
and was raised by things like sweets and bread, particularly white
bread.

I have looked on-line and found information about triglycerides being
raised by things like sausage, pepperoni, and bacon, but no mention
of bread.

What is youse guys experience?

How should I modify my diet?

That’s not a bad price for that car even if it needs some paint. The 320 is a 
good engine with 22mpg or so, probably has a 722.6. 211 is a nice platform.  
Negotiate it down a bit, get some rattle cans and have a solid driver
