New hood, grille, prep + paint, condensor, new receiver/dryer, recharge, maybe
a bumper and other misc seems like that would cost close to $4,500?

Re: [MBZ] OT Web Browser Privacy

2021-07-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Your problem is assuming there is any privacy in anything you do online,
through a browser or however.  If you just accept that undeniable truth,
then you can decide how you want to proceed.  Become Amish or just live
with some degree of intrusion according to your preferences.

There is actually no privacy in much of anything anymore, that is just
how it is.  Well, maybe talking with someone or singing while driving
down the road in an old 300D or SD or something like that, where it is
not worth anyone's bother to track you (assuming there are no trackers
attached or you have means to deal with them) or listen in (which might
be difficult to hear).

Re: [MBZ] OT Web Browser Privacy

2021-07-08 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Bob Braxman makes podcasts on internet privacy. Here's one on browsers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZTXGUjHTJc
Brave is built on Chromium (like many others) but with modifications for better
privacy.
Search engine choice is a separate issue. Duck Duck Go and StartPage have good
reputations
The problem is you never know what may be lurking in the code (or in an update).
Personally, I use Brave with the default DuckDuckGo search engine but I can't
prove it's better than others.

We've been using Brave for a couple of years now. There are issues with a few
sites, but not many. Mostly with bank sites that want to "remember" you

Chrome and Edge are now effectively the same. Edge is just a Microsoft veneer
over Chrome internals.

Is your Firefox up to date? It's not any "older" than Chrome, in the sense that
both are actively developed and updated.

I have found that some Google sites such as Docs and gMail do seem faster in
Chrome. Surprise surprise. But they do generally "work" in Firefox also, at
least for me.

I'd say it's more likely that your ad blockers are the problem than Firefox
itself. I use uBlock Origin, and it seems to work pretty well. I have not tried
any others.

I've got some ad blocker extensions for FF, but that's it.

The issue is that some websites just never load properly. I'm not geek
enough to explain it, but I suspect that newer browsers like Chrome and
Edge can do more tricks and tips, and some websites are written to use
those features, and they are not written to be "backward compatible" to
also work with the older browsers.

Some of these are online retail sites, some are social sites, some are news

Yeah, but asking Google about ways to set up a browser for protecting my
privacy is like asking a crook to help me set up my home security system.

True, if there was an issue with search results, DDG isn’t always the best.
Sometimes I’ll jump over to Chrome to do a search if I want more granular
results.

[MBZ] OT Web Browser Privacy

2021-07-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Firefox used to be my preferred browser, but lately it's functionality has
been lacking.

Can anyone point me to a good "how to" guide for the privacy settings for
Edge? A few years ago, I found an article online that walked through all
the Chrome settings so one can minimize privacy impacts (from third parties
and from Google). I was looking yesterday and found helpful advice about a
few simple and obvious things, all focused on privacy / security from third
parties, but I was expecting a lot more.
