Re: [MBZ] Lathes?

2021-12-21 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
It is the way to go if you want a huge old industrial lathe or milling
machine.
You might also want to look at shapers. They were sort of the
predecessor of the milling machine and are not considered to be
financially viable anymore because they are slower than a milling
machine but they should work fine for a hobbyist.

Re: [MBZ] Single family owned Basket case

2021-12-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
$4700 might not be unrealistic, the car looks fairly unmolested but
obviously is showing its age.

This guy's comment kinda says it all, fix what needs to be fixed to turn
it into a runner and to deal with the obvious really ratty aspects,
throw a few $k at it and have some fun.  I see a coupla cars of about
this vintage running around here, they look similar to that one, and the
owners just drive and enjoy them

Speaking from a few years experience in body shops, I don’t think there
are any huge challenges to making this into a driveable decent-looking
vehicle. Understand, I am NOT talking about “restoration,” which in my
opinion is often a name for vacuuming all the cash out of your wallet
and savings account. In other words, my preference would be to find any
actually rusted-through floor holes, and weld patches on, rather than
finding an expensive pristine floor section and replacing the whole
thing. And so forth. Same with the paint job. I myself would not
completely strip this car, where there is fairly sound paint I would
just sand, prime, seal, paint. More work where the paint has gotten so
thin there is surface rust, of course. BTW, I think that floor rust is
from years of the top leaking maybe while it was still being driven,
possibly never garaged when it was being driven. Doesn’t take a very big
leak, the floor mats will hold even a small amount of rain water a long
time and rust that floor.

But first questions first: I have not found in any of the comments or in
the description whether this car is, right now, in running and driving
condition. There are lists of things that have been replaced, like
radiator, power steering pump, etc. etc. but does that mean this car is
currently capable of starting and driving down the street, stopping,
turning a corner, returning to where you started? If so, great! Someone
needs to buy this and make a nice looking car out of it. Patina? Naw.
Not me. I want shiny new paint and a sparkling white top and a nice
interior.

But of course, Buyer gets to make all those decisions as THEY prefer.
GLWTA!!

[MBZ] 450SL C with potential

2021-12-21 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Has the usual issues of peeling paint on the 2 rear louvers and cracked
console wood, but the interior is clean and not much rust. Could be a
manageable restoration and potential flip in a couple years if selling
price is $9k or less.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-mercedes-benz-450slc-15/

I did a complete resto on my '78 SL C (same color combo). Took a couple
years to de-rust/paint and restore the interior to near concours
condition. It gradually deteriorated until my son totaled it.

Cruising in traffic knot behind plows at first. As we approached the
exit the dash lights got even dimmer and lots more warnings started
showing up, dimly, on the dash display. I was 'coasting' as far as
I could towards that last exit, hoping we could make it off the freeway.
It went much farther than I thought it should on 'no power', and when
I put it in neutral I felt it jerk and stop pushing, so I quickly pulled it back
into gear again. I had thought the engine had died, but it hadn't, quite.
We off-idled the rest of the way, at walking speed, blew through the stop
sign at the end of the ramp and rolled into a parking place at the $50,000
silver dollar bar there at the exit. Pissed off quite a few truckers etc. as
we rolling road-blocked our way to safety.

Really, quite _quite_ lucky, all things considered.

[MBZ] 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL **Rare Triple Black** - $13, 500 (Treasure Island)

2021-12-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
In 2005 my dad bought this car for my mom. She drove about 50 miles and
the car went into their garage under a car cover and it stayed in that
spot for ten years. In 2015 my mom gave the car to me as a wedding
present and I had the car painted and had the seat leather replaced.

Were you cruising at speed, or slogging slow speed in snow?

One morning my 2003 ML350 seemed to crank slower than normal (battery
not fully charged). Seat heat just blinked the red light and went out.
10 miles later I notice the wipers are going slow and turn the
headlights off. Another ten miles or so and the dash lights up like a
Christmas tree. I'm now in a very bad place to pull over on the
shoulder. Then a mile or two later it slowed down, then again to 40 in a
mile. By the time I got to a ramp it was doing exactly 20 and I pulled
over mid-ramp figuring it wouldn't let me go to a parking lot. After I
stopped it wouldn't let me take it out of park, we had to jump it to
roll it on the flatbed.

A year later, the tensioner pulley exploded ten miles from home. I drove
it five miles to the tow truck depot with no belt, lights were a little
dim and the temp went up a little. Could have driven it home but didn't
want to chance it. That pulley felt fine less than 1000 miles earlier
when I replaced the alternator.

Heat had stopped. We're on our way soon to retrieve the car... if we can!

I bid $875 on a clean title a few years back, had to bring 1220 or so in

charge through the nose for credit cards. Tax and title was less than
$100 of the total. In addition to the buyer paying the commission,
there's a $29 bidding fee, a $59 fee for picking it up...
